What? You mean eating a carb filled sweet is better when your blood sugar is low rather than when it's high like right after dinner?!? Color me shocked.

"eating refined flour and sugar on a regular basis is one of the worse things you can do for your health," Tallmadge said.

I agree. Better to just eat the chocolate straight.

Ummm, noooo.... I'm pretty sure it was Bob Saget. I heard him do it when he was on the Red Neck Comedy Tour. I love his comedy. Too bad he died of that heroin overdose a few years ago.

Would have been nice if they gave the macronutrient breakdown of each of the breakfasts.

FTA:

In the study, obese participants who ate a breakfast high in protein and carbohydrates that included a dessert were better able to stick to their diet and keep the pounds off longer than participants who ate a low-carb, low-calorie breakfast that did not include sweets.

So, the first breakfast was higher in calories overall, which were made up of protein, unnamed carbohydrates (starch?), and a dessert which would have been more starch and sugar.

The second breakfast is low-carb, meaning it could have been vegetables, fats, or proteins. But later in the article they imply the first one had more protein than the second, which leaves you wondering if the second group ate pure fat. It seems kind of hard to eat low-carb without accidentally getting some protein.

Another thing to consider is what the health outcomes of each of these groups was in spite of weight loss or gain. I have been on a lowish carb vegetarian diet and lowered myself out of the very high pre-diabetic range (A1C 6.4) into a normal area (A1C 5.4) and have actually gained a little weight in the process. My cholesterol and liver levels all moved into the normal range, as well.

I did some math (ouch). A batch of peanut butter cookies (48 cookies) has 1 cup of sugar (48 tsp). So one tsp of sugar per cookie. A small glass of OJ is four tsp.

I went to a winery yesterday that had chocolate cake as the main item in a 20 item chocolate buffet so this is relevant to my interests. It substituted for lunch instead of breakfast, but I'd be willing to research this further if I get sufficient grant money.

"I would never, in a million years, recommend cookies or cake for breakfast," said Katherine Tallmadge, a registered dietitian and author of "Diet Simple" (LifeLine Press, 2011), who was not involved in the study.

She's just pouting because she wasn't included.

/Actually, that's the only intelligent comment in this article.

This is why I don't go to news articles to get any information about nutrition at all, and I'm perennially confused by the regular fark flipfloping food greens. They're always hard selling either hope or fear, when all I want is simple understanding.

I would expect it. The cereal I eat has 1 gram of sugar per serving. According to the internets chocolate cake has 15 teaspoons of sugar.

Maybe you should stop eating Lucky Charms (14 grams of sugar).

Also, 3/4 cup of any packaged granola is 10-20g sugar, or 1.5-3 tsp, out of 34-44g total carbs. (Of which surprisingly little is fiber.)

Three cookies loaded with peanut butter would probably have a much higher nutritional value than most cereals, which have a pathetic amount of protein.
