(LiveLeak) Cool Even if you're not interested in cruises, you have to admit playing pool on a 2-axis gyrostabilized table would be pretty cool   (liveleak.com) divider line 45

Now I'm seasick.

I would just sit on that table for the entire cruise.

Because People in power are Stupid: I would just sit on that table for the entire cruise.

Royal Caribbean's newer ships have stabilizers to prevent motion sickness or at least reduce its severity. The stabilizers aid in reducing the rocking motion of the ship. They help a ship move more smoothly, which cuts down the chance of seasickness for passengers.

Carnival ships have those too. But this ship is newer and it surprised me how much motion was in that table to keep it steady. I was only on one cruise but it never felt that bouncy.

Never mind, the text does say "rough weather"

That video made me seasick.

Interestingly, while I can get ridiculously car sick, I've never gotten seasick, but I can't actually watch videos of boats in rough seas or that will give me motion sickness.

Was on one cruise myself, I think I was too drunk to get seasick. I noticed a lot of people wore those weird patches that are supposed to limit seasickness though.

/never hit rough weather
//was damn fun though

Though now that I watch the actual video, that was kinda bad. Might of made me have to sit down, heh.

In my navy days we had a fictional 'Mid Atlantic Pool League', which obviously didn't play any pool because Royal Navy battleships move around a lot. What we did have was a bar, so league night mostly involved sitting around drinking beer.
For entertainment in rough weather we had a tortoise named Crusty Pie who enjoyed tucking in his head and legs and freestyling around the messdeck on the polished floor, bouncing off posts like a pinball.

What kind of frigging house do you live in that would require one of these?

Meh. Looks pretty hard to play on. The table's gyro-stabilized, but you're not.

pfft...zero gravity 3D pool...now THAT's a game!

i've been on brilliance of the seas and played its pool table. i'm a lousy player and it wasn't any fun. you sort of have to lay more of your hand and arm on the table to support yourself and keep your shot steady. the bowling alleys are another yawner. i think it was $5 a game per player on the ncl epic and the shoe rental was $3. there was only about a dozen balls and most were kiddy 8-10 pound. the movement of the ship transferred through the wooden alley floor a little bit.

This would equate to more fun for me. It makes things interesting and challenging as you try to counter the rocking motions, or use them to your advantage. Normal bowling blows. Billiards is fun land or sea.

Tell the douchebag in the white shirt to get away from the table when it isn't his turn.

I hate people that stand on the rail and mirror your walk around the table.

Does it still work when the ship runs aground and tips over?

Be honest then, could you seriously fit a pool table in your home? In Japan I lived in a 3 bedroom apartment that couldn't have accommodated a pool table in the living room.

That system should totally be built into the hull off a ship

If it could make it through the door, there's enough room for a pool table in here. We'd have to throw out half the other furniture, though. Theoretically, the pool table could double as the dinner table...

I went on two 6-month cruises in the Navy on FFG-7's that had fin stabilizers to reduce roll and improve the ride...they broke the first day out. Never did get them fixed.

I have no desire to ever go to sea again.

"getting on the pool table" would not help motion sickeness.

All the table does is remain level with the horizon, but does nothing at all for translation in any axis.

Your inner ear is going to go down, the ship is going to go up, your eyes will remain level, and your brain will still call for the unplanned ejection of your three lobster daquiris all at the same time.

I've been on that ship on an Alaskan cruise. It had gas turbine engines at the time, which are most efficient at full power. The captain had us doing 23knots up the Inside Passage, and the small indoor pool had 6+ft waves in it. I don't get seasick, so I was playing in the wave pool until the crew kicked us all out of the pool, but let us stay in the hot tub.

They've retrofitted Radiance of the Seas with diesel engines.

Mr. Cat Poop: Let's get one with the camera on the table.

You want everyone puking all over their keyboards? Think, man!

2012-02-14 09:46:01 AM
I was on Radiance of the Seas coming from Sitka back to Vancouver during some rough seas on the open ocean, and the captain didn't let up on the throttle. It felt like the whole ship would go into freefall on the biggest waves.

In those days I flew ultralight airplanes, and to my surprise, the flying had made me immune to motion sickeness.

So with eveybody sick and puking, I was getting loaded on umbrella drinks and running around the ship like it was an amusement park ride, trying to find the best places to get airtime with a running leap or watching the spray come over the rails.

/that captain was merciless. He had a schedule to keep and we arrived on time, but dang.
