GeeksAreMyPeeps: I thought I was old when I read the article and had no idea who either person was. And then I saw this:

[27.media.tumblr.com image 453x572]

The old, I has it.

/hot

Ugh...farking ridiculous. This is what happened to me last week at work:

Co-worker 1 (17/M): "He looks like John Lennon with his hair down."
Co-worker 2 (19/F): "Who's John Lennon?"
Me and Co-worker 1: O_O "THA fark?!"

Co-worker 1 goes on to explain that he was in the Beatles and describes the Abbey Road album cover.

Co-worker 2: "Oh yeah, I have that shirt!"
Me: "You guys come let me down from the rafters in about fifteen minutes. I'm gonna go hang myself."

I bet she has every episode of Teen Mom and Jersey Shore memorized.

I failed to add that I had my hair down, and most of them haven't seen me with my hair down before. Somehow, having glasses and long hair automatically means you look like John Lennon, because I heard it from more than one person.

IlGreven: kingoomieiii: Hang on. Skrillex, SKRILLEX, got three grammys.

This, I don't understand. Because I would think, to the people voting on the Grammys, the people who can't tell Country from Speed Metal, Skrillex would be UNLISTENABLE GARBAGE, but here he is holding an award with his dumb-ass hair.

Produce dance music that physically hurts to listen to? Live performances that consist of hitting "Play" on a macbook? Three of the most prestigious awards in music.
Produce death metal of any kind, ever, regardless of the actual technical expertise required to play it live? Yeah, good luck with that.

Fark everything.

Skillrex has 3 Grammys. That's as many as Elvis won in his whole career (not counting the Lifetime Achievement, of course). That's one more than Garth Brooks has (even if you hate his music, he basically paved the way for the Keith Urbans and the Taylor Swifts of the world). Further evidence that the Grammys are fubar'd...

Seriously. I'm as open to new music as the next guy, more probably, but it has to actually be music. Skrillex is the sythesizer equivalent of a baby banging pots and pans together. Just awful. But three grammys for Skrillex, not one for Skinny Puppy or ohGr? Electronic grammy fail.

Stay off my lawn.

At first I looked at a the pictures of Skrillex and thought "Yeah, I do her." Then I found out Skrillex was a dude, and I was like: "Yup, I'd do him too."

Strategeryz0r: His newer stuff isn't as good

None of his stuff is good. In fact, every genre he attacks he ends up making a cheap knockoff of the real thing. Like some imitation brand name from Hong Kong. Listening to Joel's music is like wearing Niki sneakers while listening to a Soni discman.

In other words, he understands the technical acumen but there's nothing genuine or sincere about his work.

He's the ultimate poseur.

Hey I'm not going to defend the guys mindset. He simultaneously bashes DJ's while at the same time admitting he wouldn't be as popular as he is without them. But to each their own. I, and lots of others, like his music for what it is. I just look past the man himself.

Jonathan Hohensee: kukukupo: wow, I'm old. This headline made almost no sense to me. What is a skrillex. And is someone really called Deadmau5? That just looks like a terrible forum name.

Close. He got the name from a IRC handle he'd use.

Let's look at stage name origins:

The name "deadmau5" originated when Zimmerman claimed to have found a dead mouse in his computer while replacing his video card. He discussed this with chat room users and became known as "that dead mouse guy." The nickname "Dead Mouse" was too long for the IRC character limit, and was then shortened to deadmau5.

versus

How did you pick the name "Skrillex"?

It was a stupid old online AOL screen name. There really isn't a meaning behind it.

Winner : Deadmau5.

Like I said man. I'm not defending the man, I just like his music. To each their own. To me though, as a DJ, I love his sound. It's clean and flows well with just about anything. Plus the crowd loves it, which is always a plus.

Not really, you have to play what the crowd wants. My personal list, as far as EDM goes, is much more underground. Rabbit Killer & Farleon, Chuckie, Ftampa, Andrew Spencer, Taurus & Vagelli, Stateside Unknowns, etc.

But I can respect someone who got popular off music that actually has a purpose in my realm.

Okay. Being open-minded about music I went and listened to a sampling(3-5 songs that didn't have ads first) on youtube of skrillex and deadmaus. Neither of them is that good in my opinion. They both offer sounds that are somewhat recognizable for now. Their depth seems to be lacking. I think that fella won a "right place at the right time" award. Giving awards based on what 13-20 year-olds like is never really a good idea.

Deadmau5 actually appeared on my favourite podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, on Saturday night. Was a 3 hour show that had Deadmau5's manager complaining and reminding him that he had to be at the Grammys rehearsals in less than 7 hours.

Haven't gotten a chance to listen to the entire thing, but he discusses his name, his mouse logo, his technical training, and a bunch of other random shiat.

He's also joined by jiujitsu master Eddie Bravo and comedian Russell Peters.

I'm not a fan of Deadmau5's music or dubsteb/electronica in general, but he's an interesting guy at least.

I am baffled to hear the claim repeated that the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Gramophone Award is a prestigious honor. Its history gives ample testimony to the falsehood of that assertion. In some cases, worthy artists have received the award, but the occasion is so rare and so unpredictable that we may suppose it happens randomly.

1) You play what's familiar to the crowd in some capacity. As songs they can recognize draw a crowd, once you have that crowd you can mix it up with other tracks. It's not about being part of the problem, it's about getting butts in the door. Playing stuff people have never heard before exclusively is how you kill a room. I've seen it happen.

2) It's more underground in EDM terms than say Deadmau5, Tiesto, Aoki, etc, etc. A lot of the guys I tend to gravitate towards are bigger in the euro scene than in America. Thus making them underground to the US, but maybe not to the rest of the world. In reality a lot of my sets come from me just sitting down, listening to hundreds of songs, and just picking what I like. The DJ's that are part of the problem are the ones who go to Beatport, click buy on the top 100, and play those all day everyday. That's not me. I'm much more selective about my songs, but I do enjoy stuff that is more mainstream for what it is. Sometimes you just need to enjoy the song, and not read too much into it. If you base what you like on the fact that an artist may be "ripping off" someone else, well.. Then you're not going to like just about anything. As almost all music these days is a rip off of something else.

3) NEVER! I bow to no man :P

SubBass49: BumpInTheNight: What's radio?

It's a box that plays music broadcasted over the airwaves. People used to listen to them back in the old days, before every station started to robo-DJ their playlists, every other song had the same "guest artists" with auto-tuned voices, and you'd hear the same damn song every 40 minutes after about 15 minutes of retarded commercials.

/did I get that right?

amd1433: Sometimes in scifi shows, especially in the 70's they'd have either in the background or even in brought into the forefront "futuristic" bands that played music conceptualized and written by people who were obviously just trying to make something seem, well, futuristic or alien using a bunch of synthesized sounds.

I used to think the music in those shows was horrible because the creators of the show just weren't musicians and were basically using a gimmick to make the viewers feel out of sync with the times. the goal was to show how "traditional" musical instruments had been phased out in favor of more futuristic electronica. The disconnect for the viewer was made even greater because everybody in-universe thought what they were listening to was the greatest thing ever, even though it was just a bunch of random noise set to a beat.

As usual, sci-fi was just predicting what the future really held, albeit unintentionally. Bravo!

[cdn.static.ovimg.com image 400x300]

Or, somebody who saw that kind of sci-fi actually thought that music was good and thought, hey, why not bring that to real life? Self-fulfilling prophecy FTW.
