I really liked it. It was a throwback, but incredibly enjoyable to watch. Of all the movies I've seen, it was the best apart from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I really liked Drive, too, but as for the Oscar nominees, The Artist was the best of those I've seen, although I quite liked Midnight in Paris. It's a poor list overall. I got dragged to Extremely loud and thought it the most insultingly cynical attempt at an Oscar grab ever.

I have to say, I'm hoping Rango takes the Animated Oscar. The references, visual style, and acting alone has made it one of my favorite animated movies in the last few years.

Bull. I already know you're full of it because obviously you haven't seen "The Hurt Locker". And for that part you probably haven't seen The Artist either, which is a pretty solid film.

Somehow I don't think the Academy is going to go as gaga over a silent film as the Brits. Just a hunch.

Does seem like a weak year so I can see Artist getting it as one of those throwback "we're going to pick an Oscary film" years.

I do like that Daniel Radcliff called out the Oscars for putting Extremely Loud into the running and not HP ever. Mind you, HP would never have a shot at winning, but with this group of nominees, it could be included.

What would have been really interesting is if Pixar had released anything but Cars 2 this year? This would have been the year that there could have been really genuine outrage when it lost.

More B than A. But the performances (esp. Dujardin) are so solid that it seems like a greater movie than it actually is. It's not bad at all, but it's not amazing.

I've seen both. I liked The Hurt Locker but think it was overrated too. Up in the Air would have been my choice for the Oscar.

The Artist was a huge bore and the novelty of it wore off in about 5 minutes.

I see comments like this all the time about movies: "About five or ten minutes in I was bored with the movie and yada yada..."

So did you leave? You stayed and watched the rest of the movie instead of asking for a refund or different movie ticket? And how can you get bored after only ten minutes of a two hour movie? And did you even know it was going to be a b/w silent movie?

From what I remember, the first tem minutes was just the main actor having the ending of his film play, then he comes out on the stage for an audience encore and a funny bit involving his wife and dog. That's it. And after seeing that small ten minute section, you were bored and the novelty wore off?

LotR got a bunch of Oscars through RotK. Sad that HP didn't get the retrolove.

It'll be Glenn Close getting the Oscar over Streep.

And yes, "The Artist" is getting overhyped.

A silent script actually has to be better than the others because the writer had to make sure the audience understood what was going on without being able to have exposition explaining everything.

I'd love you to tell me how you know - for the purpose of an award for script writing - how you know in a silent film what is the product of a script rather than the director, improvisation, the cinematographer, or the editors. In a film with words, screenplay awards are given because of the words, not because of the stage directions that may or may not being in a script.
