Very glad that Bon Iver and The Civil Wars have both won so far in the pre-show awards. Definitely my two favorite music discoveries of 2011.

I bet the first thing those Hollywood people did when they heard of Whitney Houston's death was to call their speech writers and then set up a choir to sing Whitney's top hits.

I really dislike their new albums. FTFY. And i like me some proggy metal. But much like Phish, Dream Theater can't write a decent song to save their lives. At some point instrumental mastery becomes meaningless when your material is ass. See Jeff Beck, Satriani and Yngwie for further examples.

And yet again, broadcast media on the west coast is gonna delay this by 3 hrs, which means anyone here that cares will be looking for streams. or avoid twitter and the internet for 3 hrs, which is ridiculous... broadcast media hates the west coast. same crap they pulled during the vancouver olympics...

I don't know. I'm not a huge Whitney fan, but she did have an amazing voice. I would never have considered buying one of her cds, but I think her range was pretty impressive. They should make somewhat of a to-do, IMNSHO.

While I agree with you in spirit, it's actually a pretty deep invite list to the Grammys. I had a music teacher in high school whose group recorded a jazz album. It got onto some Grammy ballot, but it was in the earliest round of the pre-nomination process when there are literally dozens of candidates, IIRC.

He got nowhere near actually being nominated or winning anything, but I do remember him saying that it meant he could go to the ceremony if he wanted. On his own dime, of course.

So, it should come as no surprise that some trust fund act from LA got a ride from her publicist/mother.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge fan of her work and have been for well over 20 years. I just think that when a celebrity dies, people go overboard in their mourning/grief for the person, and when said celebrity dies right before a major awards show, it's even worse. I'm not suggesting people should act like it didn't happen, and when someone asks how they feel about Whitney's death, say "Who?", but that doesn't mean I think the entire show should be one giant circle jerk over her either.
