that takes some serious skill along with a large pair, would have been a cool video if they would have stayed with one camera view more then 6 seconds

That was really fun to watch, buy no way was that a F1 car. More like F3.

Damn that looks like fun.

/except for that whole freezing your balls off part.

They should turn this into an actual race.

Where do you find all season radials for an F3 car?

Yeah, it didn't look right to me either. A quick GIS shows that looks like an F3.

Also, that is one crazy motherfarker right there.

You know who else liked to joyride down the streets of Nuremberg to show off the latest style of car?

2012-02-12 05:05:14 PM
I thought he was going to run Nordschleife, left disappointed. Yes it's still crazy but that's the short F1 track, not the 13 mile Nordschleife monster.

You know how I know you didn't make it past the 3 minute mark...

I wouldn't even call it that. I drove a Piper-Audi around brands hatch and it looks more or less identical

(I'm sitting in number 21)

They're race-day cars and you'll be lucky to get them above 40MPH. By the looks of the car in the vid, I'd say it's the same deal.

Not to take anything away from the guy though, he's nuts

2wolves: Where do you find all season radials for an F3 car?

They where snow tires and they look like they had the odd softer on the inside bits like the old Pirelli P77.

Man, that looks like fun!

Wasn't there a greenlight a little while ago of someone drifting through some snow-and-ice-covered country roads - it was pretty amazing, but I can't find it anywhere.

2012-02-12 06:54:29 PM
Why is everyone saying the guy is nuts? He's on a safe track in a fairly low powered car. Driving on snow is fun. If I were there, I'd be trying to outrun him.

I know you're just meme'n yer ass off, but Nürburg != Nürnberg.

Am I the only one who thought that was kinda lame? Would have been nice to know how fast he was going. Also would have been nice to know how long it took.

2012-02-12 07:21:43 PM
Any idea what he got up to on the straights (about 3:30, 4:00, & 6:00)?

I knew someone would have the info. Thanks.

GonzoNihilist: Am I the only one who thought that was kinda lame? Would have been nice to know how fast he was going. Also would have been nice to know how long it took.

Lame. Not a F1 car. And definitely not a F1 driver. I could probably find a half dozen drivers within a snowball's throw of here that could do better. Lame.

2012-02-12 08:49:37 PM
It looks a lot like those F1 style cars you rent that have more regular function.

Would make sense.

Pay attention to the acceleration that occurred when he hit the clear patch under the access bridge. farking moved.
Think its the model they showed on Top Gear (jezzer driving a quick lap without a seat)

2012-02-12 08:52:41 PM
Am I the only one that wished he had hit the far wall as he exited the garage?

2012-02-12 08:53:19 PM
Those are the cars they use for the racing school at the Nürburgring. A far cry from F1. A far cry from F3 even. Cool video still.

Meh. Call me when they put some other cars out there.

I'd like to see a comparison to a vehicle with mattracks installed. (new window)

I would absolutely do the same damn thing given the opportunity. CONSISTENT slippery traction is a thing of beauty. Anyone having ample seat time in a rear-wheel-drive car with a limited slip rear end, who doesn't rely on electronic gadgetry to save their sideways ass, could probably drift that Formula car about the same in the snow like that.

Note also, when he first pulls out of the garage and comes to a halt before taking off, there are some big cross-grooves cut into the rear tires.

2012-02-13 12:31:38 AM
I realize they can't show the whole Nordschleife (well, they could, but it would take about twenty minutes), but surely they could have shown him going over Eiskurve...

/ Although maybe they did
// It's hard to get bearings with the camera switching views every thirteen frames

2012-02-13 12:42:19 AM
Even if it isn't an F1, it's still light as hell, which means even less traction. They're not designed for that sort of thing.

He does slow down to about 50kms or less for the turns and technical sections, but that's the only possible way to handle them with such little traction, in anything except maybe a rally car with snow tires. And he was going pretty damned fast for the soft turns and straights, which is madness. You can see it getting squirrely on him constantly, but he keeps it together.

All you armchair racing experts should go ahead and try to take his job as chief driving instructor at the Nürburgring if you think you can do better.

I want to take my 325ix, and my one friend there. It should make for a memorable ride.

Answers:

According to the Nurburgring Site, that is a Formula BMW car, which makes 140hp, or less than the wife's Suby, and about the same as my Corolla.

The tires are Dunlop, in this video which is proudly Powered by Dunlop. Make sure you buy Dunlop tires...

This looks like a crapload of fun in any case. It's not like it's going to be /easy/ to drive a rwd car that weighs pretty much nothing around that track in wet, let alone snow.

I need an extra 1000 euros.

From TFA: Gulden doesn't hold back on the accelerator as he tackles the course, either.

*snorts* Looks like fun, but that was nowhere near as fast as the caption is suggesting. A decent family car with snow tires in the hands of someone with a bit of experience in winter conditions should be able to keep up just fine.

F1 car on snow? Try this one on for size (new window).

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the dry weight of your Subaru and Corolla are a bit higher than 455kg. Like maybe three times more! But obviously not an F1... that would have been wheelspin city and likely been slower though really something to hear.

I was thinking the same thing, I'd love to hear an F1 car do that, it would be the most awesome 15 seconds of noise before the engine blows up.

Looks like fun. I would have wrecked it on the first corner.

Fail, the ring is just south of Koblenz, not even funny anyways
Link (The Ring is nowhere near the streets of Nuremberg)

rezin8: How about a real F1 car with a real F1 driver on something that's just as slick as snow. (new window)

Unfortunately thats probably the extent of F1 racing at the track. It was just a grift to get the NYC race Bernie has wanted since before Indy refused to pony up the cash to keep their race.

Wow, I've driven the 'Ring in a rental Smart Roadster Coupe on a dry track and I think he was still quicker than me. Excellent car control. It also helps the snow wasn't very deep. I kept imagining what it would be like to catch the front wing in a drift higher than 3" at speed.

Would anyone else love to know the background, experience, and age of some of the SuperDrivers in this thread?
