Weird, the opposite happened to the squirrel population around my home about ten years ago. The reds chased all the blacks out. My guess it is which ever population is larger eventually pushes the other out. However, we don't have any greys.

When you live in a post coal-choked industrial wasteland, black squirrels have better camouflage from predators. The lack of broad, managed woodlots that used to cover the country affects things.

Uniquely, for Britain the country was one big garden. Some forest was managed for deer and boar, some for firewood, and some for charcoal. Acres of trees were coppiced. All this created an environment where all knowledge of natural state has been lost.

Then came the Industrial Revolution, and with everything covered in soot you got large black squirrel populations. I'm not really sure why the would be spreading now, but I think I'd draw parallels to these events and see how things match.

It might not be a misuse. I haven't lookes it up, but if science classifies it as a different species, then it is correct because there are more differences.

Why would you care if one color variant of the invasive same species is outnumbering the other color variant? They're the same damned thing, just one with a dominant color gene.
