by iconic they mean old books that few people have read in the last 10 years, outside of being forced to read the book for school?

Apparently the same person is all of these "iconic charecters" because every one looked the same with different hair.

He is about three feet high, and is dressed in a little red jacket or roundabout, with red breeches buckled at the knee, gray or black stockings, and a hat, cocked in the style of a century ago, over a little, old, withered face. Round his neck is an Elizabethan ruff, and frills of lace are at his wrists.

Great, every image EXCEPT Bovary loaded. And they all look like David Byrne.

Wow, that is not how I pictured Mr. Rochester at all.

That's not a grim mouth. That's a girl's mouth. In fact, he looks too young and girly over all.

Boyish doesn't have to mean prepubescent. Jeremy Irons is a much more appropriate Humbert, IMO.

Anyone who hasn't read "The Maltese Falcon" or other Sam Spade stories by Dashiel Hammett is cheating themselves out of some good, hard-boiled reads. Also, his Continental Op stories are really good as well.

Granted, I prefer Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe stories, Sam Spade is some good reading. :p
