Poor people have not been blessed by God, so they deserve all that they get.

you misspelled "all."

It's because they view being poor as not simply a economic condition. It's evidence of deep moral failing.

Because Jesus told them to. Well, their pastor and very religious representative said Jesus hates the poor, but they don't see the difference.

Nearly all the conservatives I know are atheists, they openly say "fark Christian values and fark the bible thumpers".

The sad part is that American conservatism has become all about being angry at others and nothing about dealing with problems in a realistic way. All they can do is focus their contempt towards others they are told are getting something for free. Meanwhile they themselves are often poor and within the groups that bring contempt from other conservatives and in sometimes even themselves!

I literally know three conservative federal employees who biatch about people living off their taxes. When their entire pay check comes from the taxes of others. I know conservatives who haven't worked a job in 10 years and they will complain about people who don't work. One person I know who who has only had a job for approximately 6 months in the past 13 years literally had the balls to complain about people collecting unemployment. When explained that people pay for unemployment benefits via pay deductions, he became angry and shout "it's god damn socialism"!!!

The sad part is these people are being mislead by powerful forces in this country.

He applies for five jobs each week, he says, to comply with a requirement passed by the Florida Legislature.

"I understand why (lawmakers) want you to get out and apply," said Roberts, who traveled by bus from Orlando to Tallahassee last week to protest Medicaid cuts. "But I don't think they understand how difficult it really is."

It sure is difficult, especially when you've decided to travel on a bus all day instead of looking for a job. Why doesn't the Florida Legislature provide protest travel vouchers?

So anyone on public assistance is not allowed to engage in any other activity, including advocating for their own rights, until they have a job, or the money stops coming. Threatening people's basic welfare to get them to yield your political viewpoint is so very American of you.

That's a stupid argument. They're allowed to engage in any activity they desire. But if they want to collect unemployment, they have to apply for five jobs each week if they want to keep receiving unemployment checks. There's no exemption for deciding you want to go protest instead of fulfilling your obligations to get paid, anymore than there's an exemption for leaving work to protest and expecting your employer to pay you for hours not worked.

One one hand you have people that worked hard all their life in a miserably cold climate and were smart enough to save for retirement.

On the other hand, you have white trash meth heads who ought to be shot on site.

Seems like a simple case of putting the meth heads on a trash barge and sending them off into a hurricaine.

2012-02-12 03:12:58 PM
It's America. The "Land of Opportunity".

People are still perpetuating the myth of social flexibility. That the poor can be rich if they work hard enough. Even though things aren't really like that anymore.

It's still looked upon as a moral or character failing if you're poor in this country. That somehow, you're lazy. Or you're a moocher. Or an addict. Or there's just something wrong with you if you haven't pulled yourself up by your bootstraps yet.

It's a horrible attitude which leaves many hostile or indifferent towards the segment of this country that needs the most assistance.

Many poor people are so "lazy" that they're working 2 or 3 jobs just to support their families. Or to try to save up money so their kids can go to college. But the gap between the poor and the rich is ever-widening. The middle-class is disappearing. It's not getting better for anyone but the wealthiest in this country.

2012-02-12 03:18:55 PM
Because the Florida GOP is made up of rich guys who actually dislike the poor.

/That was easy.

nah, I think we should take ALL the people in every jail in florida, put them on a boat and point them towards cuba.

Eventually the commies will run out of bullets, and then the island gets a brand NEW government! or they become a wasteland of cannibal meth head mutants and rugged survivalists out for revenge.

either way we win!

If people can't get jobs -arrest them and use them as prison labor. That way you circumvent all this liberal "minimum wage" hooey.

Luke 4:16-19 When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favour. Oh wait, did I say good news for poor? I meant to say F those guys.'

Don't be ridiculous, republicans love poor people. They want to keep as many people as poor as possible. Because if you can wrack someone with poverty for a whole generation, their children are that much more likely to vote republican.

2012-02-12 04:04:16 PM
Because poor people won't or can't vote. Because poor people can't contribute big bucks to political campaigns.

Bounce a check, get sent to the pokey. Get sent to the pokey, make sofas or other "Made in America" items for a wage of pennies an hour. Make a wage of pennies an hour, be forced to pay off stay in prison. Be forced to pay off stay in prison, write a check. Write a check, bounce a check.

Yes, it is that simple. But they're not debtor's prisons, nope. Not yet, at least.

AirForceVet: You sound like a Republican.

I'm actually not.
I'm a socialist.
But, in order for socialism to work, so do people.
People who don't work but could are a poison to society.

There's all sorts of them. But our country has become a country the enables sloth.
We pay people not to grow crops.
We pay people utility reimbursements after paying for their rent.
We give them food.
We give them shelter.
We give them opportunity.

They can use it to better themselves or piss it away.

Well, if you are a parent and your ward decides to piss it away, you can show them the door at 18.

How many generations of professionally unemployed people are we going to just keep giving incentives to regenerate?

It's time for our nation to say, enough's enough.
The deadline for subsidized housing must end and soon.
The Time to replace our farm workers from Mexico with prison labor is here.

Yeah, we need work farms.
We need sweat shops.

We don't need to prop up China's child labor market to mollycoddle a new generation of pants on the ground McGangstas.

We do need to kick the lazy in the nuts and tell them to work, and if they can't find it, we will.

Basically this. They use Christianity as a crutch to justify whatever they already believe. They go to churches that make them feel good and tell them nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They spend money on books that re-interpret scripture to mean whatever they want it to mean.

Any day now I expect them to release a "corrected" bible that has verses like:

Matthew 5:3"Blessed are the rich, for they are hardworking and prosperous"

or

Matthew 9:14: "It is harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than it is for a poor man to enter the Kingdom of God"

or

Matthew 21:21 "Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all the poor who were there without enough money to buy anything. He congratulated the moneychangers for their hard work and blessed the merchants."

powers up his laptop computer and uses the free wireless Internet to apply for retail jobs.
He applies for five jobs each week, he says, to comply with a requirement passed by the Florida Legislature.

So he's only doing the absolute bare minimum that he HAS to do? Somebody isn't terribly motivated.

"I understand why (lawmakers) want you to get out and apply," said Roberts, who traveled by bus from Orlando to Tallahassee last week to protest Medicaid cuts. "But I don't think they understand how difficult it really is."

Oh yes, sitting on a laptop and doing the absolute minimum you are required to do is SUCH a burden. I mean with an attitude like that I'd want to hire him too, really! There was a time in my life where I put in more applications in a week than this guy apparently does in a month. If you are unemployed then your full time job is to look for work if you want a job, particularly in this economy.

The Republican-led Legislature passed a series of sweeping changes last year and is considering additional changes in 2012 that lawmakers say protect taxpayer dollars, wean residents off government assistance and position businesses to reignite Florida's dormant economy.

As the above person demonstrates, this is a good idea because he would apparently not even apply for the five jobs a week he is applying for if he wasn't required to do it. You will be purely amazed just how quickly people think its worth a 40+ hour a week time investment to look for a job when they are up against getting cut off from unemployment.

Critics like Dorene Barker, legislative director with Florida Legal Services, say the measures amount to an "unprecedented attack on the poor"

It's an 'attack' to tell people they actually have to look for work now? People will continue to do the bare minimum they can get away with in order to collect unemployment and will continue to not be particularly motivated to find work so long as they can coast by.

imapirate: Easy: Republicans hate everyone besides rich, white men.

Actually, I'd argue Republicans love young, attractive white females more than just about anything. Having lived in the South for a while, I decided it wasn't just about getting in their pants either (many of those old white dudes are in the closet anyway) -- it's more about a weird affirmation of their self-perceived magnanimity.

You're a greedy, souless asshole who fired 1000 people just so you could make a minor profit? Not true! when you just paid for that 23 year old's white girl's drink and bought another some jewelry. You're a giver! Jesus applauds your generosity.

Watch for it some time -- these old penurious bastards will open their wallets in a heartbeat to some cute little white girl. It really doesn't matter if they know her or not. But if you're not attractive and white? Good luck. Jesus doesn't apparently want you to give to those leeches.

From outside an Orlando Starbucks, 45-year-old Rudy Roberts powers up his laptop computer

That's all I needed to read. This "poor" guy has a laptop? How the hell did he afford that. I'm glad he can find some money in his "poor" budget to buy a computer when I have to work to if I want to buy one. I wonder if he pops in for a taxpayer-funded six-dollar frappachino while he's at it.

another that would prohibit people from using food stamps from buying junk food.
