Coconut milk is a natural laxative. One more thing Gilligan never told us.

Jesus Christ, people. Just drink water. You get enough salt and sugar in your regular diet. You don't need to add more.

I'm thrilled to find a frozen coconut creation. It is divine and a godsend to the lactose intolerant.

Now let me get this straight- put the lime in the coconut, you drank them both up?!?

Oh FFS. Those sports drinks are nasty enough and now you want to one up them with coconut? Goddammit people.

Very good for the morning after a hard night of drinking, but that is the only time I drink it.

I live in SE Asia so can buy fresh coconut milk on the street (they whack the top off a green coconut and stick in a straw). Very refreshing and reviving on a hot day.

And yes, if you put the lime in the coconut, it's actually pretty darn good as well.

Lt. Cheese Weasel: Coconut milk is a natural laxative. One more thing Gilligan never told us.

I think you need the right coconut, or maybe the ones that aren't ripe. Can't remember, but yeah when it's the right one it's not a laxative and quite nice.

Coconut water is pretty freaking awesome. I'd rather drink that vs gatorade after/ during a workout.

Actually, at least coconut water has potassium in it, which is essential if you're actually dehydrated. Gatorade dropped their potassium levels years ago, so now you get about 30mg per serving, which is pretty crappy. To give you an idea about how little that is: coconut water gives you 515 mg per serving.

But if you want the grand re-hydrating drink of all time (at least as far as potassium is concerned) - Low Sodium V8 drops a whopping 900 mg per serving. If you're hungover, a shot of V8 is going to make you feel better faster than either Gatorade or coconut water.

But you still have to drink water. Water is free and it hydrates almost better than anything else unless your electrolyte levels are truly low. Then you should probably mix it up with either V8 or coconut water. Gatorade is for idiots.

Here's a DIY "gatorade" recipe. I wonder if you could simply use a lot less sugar and a lot more potassium chloride

- 1 packet any flavor of unsweetened Kool-Aid or similar product for making 2 quarts
- 8 tablespoons (1/2 cup) sugar
- 3/8 teaspoon of salt
- 1/8 teaspoon salt substitute that contains potassium chloride
- 2 quarts of water

I do that all the time. I have some of that heart safe potassium chloride salt, after sweaty exercise i put some in water and drink, or sprinkle it on whatever im eating. Works great, no leg cramps.

Do any of you chemists know what that would do if put into booze? Would it still work? You know, for the drunk who's going to work out.

I used to drink double gins on the rocks all Friday night and Saturday morning have a V8 for breakfast. Keeping that tomato juice down was a sign I was going to be okay.

The various corporations marketing/selling coconut water are getting hammered with lawsuits over some of their questionable advertising claims.

On a separate note, an in-law is a executive with a large beverage corporation (a consummate geek who won't shut up about his business every Thanksgiving... last year he brought a case of 50 Cent's energy drink prototype, which was weird but whatever). Guy insists that there only 3 ingredients proven to have a physiological effect on the consumer: alcohol, caffeine, and sugar. Everything else is marketing BS.

Potassium salts in whatever form are essential for proper hydration. I work tree planting and during a hot day will drink up to 8 litres of water or more; at that level of exertion you lose so much of your salts and electrolytes that if you don't supplement you will be dehydrated no matter how much water you drink. I use a supplement called Emergen-C it is a mix of vitamins and minerals heavy on vitamin C. I recover faster, don't cramp as bad (at all) and it is way cheaper than the sugary sports drinks.

2012-02-12 02:56:07 PM
If I remember correctly, the theory behind coconut water as a good sports drink is the fact that it's basically isotonic with human blood. Seriously, if you're in a pinch you can IV the shiat directly. (new window)

That being said...it's got less electrolytes than we need after a really tough workout. Health related foodstuffs are a market massively prone to fads, but this stuff really isn't all that bad. Helluva lot cheaper than gatorade too, and won't go bad if left in your gym bag all day (or weekend) like milk will.

If I remember correctly, milk's still the best after-workout food possible. It has the water you need to rehydrate, and lots of easily digestible carbohydrate to replenish your body's blood glycogen. In addition there's enough protein in milk to prevent catabolic muscle breakdown (after you work out heavily, your muscle fibers are slightly damaged and your body needs blood protein to start repairing them. If you don't consume protein within a 1-2 hour window after working out, most of the potential muscle growth you'd get from the workout vanishes.

Smeggy Smurf: Heart save potassium chloride salt?

Well, from past experimentation, its main chemical effect would be to make your drink salty. ;)
Seriously, its meant for use as a table salt alternative, its pretty much harmless through normal use, although I do know that too much potassium can stop your heart, I am guessing you'd have to eat a whole box of the crap to have that happen. Or inject it directly. I have been using it in amounts less than a teaspoon (I.e. a heavy salt shaker sprinkle on foods) for years now, the only effect is that the food tastes salty, and i dont wake up with leg cramps at 2 am. I am not a chemist, or a Dr., my results may kill you.

I crave chocolate milk after a run or a workout. I used to feel kinda bad about that but I've read a lot about it being a good thing and somehow it just feels so friggin' good, it really balances me out.

Gee, you're on to us. Yes, we just sold you more caffeine and more sugar and more salt as "energy" or "sports" or "health" drinks. We can't fool you. Well, not for more than a decade or two. You've got us! Mea culpa, I must say!

Here, have some coconut water. We've got tonnes of the stuff since the health nuts made us stop putting coconut oil in food because of the saturated oils and fats scare.

Now, what are we going to do with all this surplus cat pee? I guess we can always sell it as "artisanal" beer. Slap a lot of silly labels on it and they'll never know it all comes from one giant corporate vat.

Another Brantgoose monologue of cynical bastardy.

To be fair, coconut water (or milk) isn't remotely as fatty as cocanut oil used in foods.

It isn't hydrogenated to make the oil solid, for one thing. It's the solid fats and oils that do most of the harm in your diet.

All the same, I am skeptical of products that are sold as "sports", "health", "energy" products. The only energy source that matters much is glucose, the sugar your body burns, and while your body can burn fats and proteins, etc., sugar and unhealthy fats and oils are usually the product being sold, seeing as they are extra-cheap and plentiful and your body can be taught to crave them relentlessly.

Don't. Trust. Marketing.

Fashion is just a kind of marketing.

Coconut milk is not coconut water. Coconut milk is what's left after the coconut has matured and has meat.

Coconut milk is what's inside a green coconut, and most natives drink it thusly:

I like coconut water.

I also like two teaspoons of honey in a big cup of tea when I feel really depleted.

I hate marketing.
