You could goatse some of the sites in the Castro district.

Start at Embarcadero - walk over the hill to Fisherman's Wharf - take a cab to and walk across the Golden Gate, see City Hall, then rent a car. See the Berkeley campus, and then drive and see the nature. Yosemite and Tahoe are to the west, the Redwoods and Napa Valley to the North, and Monterey and Big Sur to the south (if you go south stop and see Stanford's campus, but even as run down as Berekely's is, it's not really as pretty - no view).

The urban areas of the SF Bay are very over rated. The gems of NoCal are in the country side and only accessible by car.

What to do in SF?

Hang out in the Tenderloin. Lots of cool little bars and shops in there. But be careful of the bums and hoodlums.
Take the N Judah train to the Beach. Walk back through Golden Gate park until you get tired, then go jump on the N Judah.
There's some cool old bars on Haight street, both upper and lower.
Chinatown is a lot of fun, too, just for walking around and soaking up the sights. It's both a touristy and working neighborhood.
North Beach is fun, too. Have some overpriced Italian food and enjoy the ambiance if this might be your only trip to SF.

What the article didn't mention is that during ww2 when the navy discharged gay sailors it usually did so in SF due to the large naval presence there. Most of them decided to stay and helped turn the place into the city it is now.

Get Dim Sum in Chinatown. My suggestion is Great Eastern, but there are plenty of other great choices. Don't be intimidated by the servers.

I also enjoy the coastline along the NW quadrant of the city, though that may be a bit out of your way.

Farmers' Market at the Ferry Building (T/Th/Sat)

Good food in the Mission (will probably require research beforehand)

Happy Hour in the Finaicial District / South of Market / Embarcadero (b/t about Pier 23 and AT&T Park)

Eat at any of the Burmese restaurants in the neighborhood just northeast of Golden Gate Park (Burmese triangle). Freakin' fantastic, if you can get in the door.

As someone who lives far from the ocean, I'll also recommend some seafood for anyone like me. I had Dungennes crab there, and it was one of my favorite meals of all time. I think every seafood meal I had there was excellent.

It would be hard to get anything done living in SF.

Parties every weekend, the coolest kids anywhere, and the gay scene is not ageist like in LA.

Huge focus on high tech, so a scientist or engineer can have a real life while living real.

I lived in the Tenderloin, all I could afford.
Being 18 and blissfully ignorant can be a wonderful thing. That and being friends with all the local queens is always helpful, no one messes with royalty!

Used to enjoy hanging out at the Coit tower when I lived in the area. There are also a number of public gardens in the area that can be pretty cool. The old WW2 submarine may still be docked by the wharves, as well, it's pretty cool.

Kinda hard to know what to tell you, there's not really anything that you can visit on short notice that's not designed with tourism at least partially in mind. I mean, c'mon, it's a port city. Or, rather there's nowhere that you would want to go as a tourist that's not "tourist stuff". I mean, there's Chinatown and the Tenderloin, but you'll stay the hell out of both if you enjoy the possession of your wallet and shoes. There's the dog park where local people hang out, but why would you give a fark about a dog park? There are an assload of shopping districts that aren't "tourist", but they're the same stores you can find in any city. There's the stage productions, but you're not probably getting tickets to anything that doesn't suck on two days' notice.

I guess there's the alcohol. Head up to Napa for wine tours and stuff, of the pyramid for beer. That's really back to tourist stuff, though. I guess you can walk into a random bar and check out the local brews, that's at least only indirectly "touristy". Anchor Steam and steam beers in general are kind of a local specialty, and also delicious.

I was stationed at NAS Alameda before it was closed. I loved living in the Bay Area. Some of the best people I've known live there... and I was happy to leave too. Good times.

Sort of like asking, "why is Nashville full of musicians?".

Most of the heavily industrial, agricultural and professional ones, I would think.

Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Oakland (well, right-wing for California), Most of LA (again), Phoenix, probably FL's cities when the tag isn't overwhelming political affiliations, etc.

Remember that SF maintains its lefty credentials in the same way that it maintains its "green" credentials-- outsourcing everything that would disrupt the town's portrayal to the tourists to Oakland so that they can reap the benefits of a more balanced political spectrum, heavy industry, etc while maintaining plausible deniability when it might be considered a downside. Urban areas tend to be pretty balanced overall, if there's more than a slight "tilt" in the reputation of a given city you can bet your boots that there's a sister city or area that balances it out.

San Francisco is just a microcosm of what happens with port cities in general. Maritime trade has always led to an increase in contact with other cultures and ethnicities. Look at places like Wilmington, Charleston, and Mobile. These southern port cities are more cosmopolitan and people who live there tend to have less isolated mindsets.

Also, sailors were always of a slightly different mentality than people who spend their lives on land. Read any text that touches on the behavior or psychology of sailors, and being at sea for long stretches of time alters their perceptions and interaction with terrestrial society. It manifests itself most clearly in boozing and wenching, yes, but it creates an interesting little sub-world. When I was in Baltimore for an archaeology conference last month, I went bar crawling with a couple of tall ship sailors. Those guys just think differently than you or me (I wish OlaftheBent were here to share some of his experiences.

What I found most funny was when two sailors who hadn't seen each other in a few years started talking, the conversation was literally timeless. "Have you seen Dave lately?" "Yeah, I heard he was on the Wendemeen, as she was leaving Portland." Conversations that have taken place for centuries, and for millenia in other languages.

Random food in oakland chinatown during the day. Sf chinatown repeats itself every block, so the climb isnt worth it. I also really loved the haight-ashbury neighborhood and neighboring golden gate park, though youll need a bus to get there and back

Wish you'd posted this question earlier, there was a interesting concert I would have loved to be at at the San Francisco Maritime Museum on the Balclutha last night. They have an awesome public sing-along there the first Saturday of the month every month, too, but you likely won't be there long enough for that. I know you don't want to do "tourist stuff," but I really enjoy that museum and it helps you understand the history of the place in ways that other things would not.

If you do make it out to Berkeley definitely hit up the Brazil Cafe. If you like Tri Tip, their sandwich is the best I've ever had. The place looks like its about to fall over so, don't let the lack of atmosphere scare you.

I was in SF in October for a few days,
I've never had more fun on a vacation. Fishermans warf was cool, and China town was very educational. (what the hell were all those things??) I did other non touresty things too, but those are private.

There is a great burrito place in the upper Mission, around where it meets Valencia. Delicious. Stroll around the pan handle of Golden Gate park for some great people watching.
There are some awesome bars with great local bands in North Beach.

At the local batting cage with my son. I looked at the guy (and his son) in the cage next to us...A guy I had literally not seen for 12-13 years or so.
