Kevin Smith always bleats on about how he was offered a writing position on a Beetlejuice sequel. He probably should have taken the gig.

I am waiting for the sequel of White Noise from the personal viewpoint.

Yeah, why didn't Michael Keaton have a better career? He was the best, if not the most canonically accurate Batman, IMO. He was great in Jackie Brown and he had some pretty good comedic roles. Yet he sits by the phone while Adam Sandler makes $20mill per movie.

Yeah, I don't get this either. He's a great actor.

Of course he's "hugely interested", what the fark else does he have to do?

He was the best Batman.

im going to say multiplicity... and it might be true that he nailed wayne, the batman side of his movies was particularly bad (i know that burton/nicholson are more to blame for that end)

/watched it last month, and far worse than i remembered it

reprise his role... or do his dishes. He's free and up for whatever! The important thing is that he's getting out and meeting new people, alright?

2012-02-12 11:22:58 AM
Well, a sequel to Beetlejuice won't be hard for Burton, considering half of what he's done over the past 20 years has essentially been sequels to (or remakes of) Beetlejuice.

2012-02-12 11:33:07 AM

Too old, Keaton. Do a Johnny Dangerously sequel instead.

I think Michael Keaton is one of the underrated actors in Hollywood. Although he does comedy well, he is also a great dramatic actor. Two of his best movies are "Pacific Heights" and "Clean and Sober". Considering that actors like DeNiro and Pacino can only play caricatures of themselves, I say Keaton is as good if not better than either of those two.

I wish Keaton had been young enough to do the Nolan films.

Wayne 985: I wish Keaton had been young enough to do the Nolan films.

I think Nolan is the problem though. His version of Batman is too sane. It's not like Christian Bale can't play a psycho. It's that he's too reigned in. Keaton's Wayne was just slightly crazy, which is the way Burton directed him. Under Nolan, Keaton would probably be as bland as Bale is.

I'd rather have a Johnny Dangerously sequel.

I know it's sacrilegious to say so around here, but I think Nolan's Batman movies are kind of boring.

Burton's Batman was a murderer. He killed more people on-screen than the Joker did.

I really dislike Burton's Batman. It's just a Burton creepy-tinged version of the 1960s camp version.

But Keaton is cool. I prefer him in Night Shift, though.

Ummm....what movie were you watching?

If you recall, the Joker's hygiene products and parade gassing easily killed thousands!

He smells of desperation, which is sad.

Too old? How old do you think Beetlejuice is supposed to be?

2012-02-12 12:21:31 PM
Keaton was a good Batman, but a crappy Bruce Wayne.

Kilmer was an excellent Bruce Wayne and a so-so Batman.

Clooney was the worst Bruce Wayne and only a so-so nipple suit guy

I think Bale manages to portray the Bruce Wayne very well as a dichotomy of smarmy rich boy and conflicted hero. I also think his Batman comes across well as half Wayne's released rage and half desire to help

God this would be great. Keaton IS Beetlejuice. I just watched it two nights ago and its a masterpiece, in large part due to Keaton's charismatic role as the titular lead. And he's definitely not too old. With all the make-up and fx, Keaton could easily reprise his role.

Burton's first Batman was stiff and boring and a little unpleasant all around. Batman Returns had a level of self awareness and edginess that made it great though.

Still, the Nolan films are much more complex and intelligent, and certainly have better written characters.

I'll admit to ignoring your question to address my point: for me Keaton is too old to be playing a high - energy character like Beetlejuice, despite you wanting to argue the agelessness of that character. Keaton did Beetlejuice when he was 37. He's now a 60 year old guy. I'm tired of watching actors trying to recapture lightning in a bottle and play characters that really need a younger actor. Why couldn't someone like Sam Rockwell play Beetle? At least he's 42.

Which remeinds me I hope they never do another Ghostbusters sequel with the original cast. They are way too old to pull it off.

Yes, yes. Michael Keaton is a fine actor. However, I would be more excited for a sequel if it followed closely to my own script. It focuses on Geena Davis continuing to manifest to shepherd Winona Ryder into her burgeoning womanhood. Yup, working on that script sure helped me get through some lonely teenage nights. I might head off to my bunk to work on a revision.

Michael Keaton is a terrific comic and dramatic actor. While his successes aren't to be discounted, he deserves better than the mediocrity to which he's been banished.

The Other Guys is a piece of crap, but it serves as a powerful reminder of the Keaton's comic prowess. He's the only good thing in that movie.

Anyone see that movie he directed? Any good?

I'm just gonna call that scene being mirrored in the sequel with Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis sitting on either side of Beetlejuice in the waiting room.

ArkAngel: I think Bale manages to portray the Bruce Wayne very well as a dichotomy of smarmy rich boy and conflicted hero

I didn't see anything conflicted in his character at all. Maybe in the one scene where he was going to shoot his parents' killer but other than that he's just a cop who happens to dress as a bat to scare criminals. That ballistics scene in The Dark Knight (which didn't make any sense, BTW) might as well have been straight out of a CSI show. Keaton at least played the character sort of unhinged.
