What I got.

Things that should have happened long ago, aren't happening fast enough.

or: Kissing a coon is sometimes just a TV show.

It sounds like the author is sort of disappointed that we've matured enough as a society that people kissing different types of people isn't shocking.

The reason there aren't any iconic television kisses anymore is because what's left? There aren't any television firsts anymore as far as kisses go, because it's all already been done.

That dude needs to pull the stick out of his ass... or jam it in farther.

Either way; he needs an attitude adjustment.

I remember seeing that as a child when it aired. I grew up in a predominantly white community, in fact there was only one black kid in my elementary school at the time. Surprisingly enough there was no racism in my family or my school. I remember not knowing what the fuss was about when that kiss aired.

Television is worlds different today than it was in the All in the Family years. I don't just mean content. The three networks were the only game in town, and the odds that your friends and co-workers saw the same episode of a top rated show as you did were pretty good.

Today there are dozens more options for you to watch at any given time, and more ways to watch. DVR, Tivo, online streaming, etc. Maybe you won't actually watch that buzz-worthy episode until a few days after it aired. Maybe you won't watch it at all but read a recap on the AV Club website. TV has become more of a personal experience than a shared experience. Of course there are exceptions, like the Super Bowl or awards shows or series finales of popular shows.

About all I can think of is a black, transgendered nazi kissing Fred Phelps.

Just what kind of a dweeb thinks that was a big deal? Oh, the New York Times. Figures it would be a bullsh*t outfit.

seemed to stir up a LOT of things... yet it was just two guys kissing, one of which, pretty much EVERYONE thought was gay already.... Yet there was a lot of talk, outrage, and general anti gay sentiments thrown out about it for a week or two. Surprised it wasn't mentioned, but weak article is weak.

Couldn't have been that big of deal. I'm not even sure who they are. Is the one the American Idol guy?

the real issue is that in 1970 or whatever there were only like 3 channels and everyone watched the same shows.

All in the Family was covering issues in the early 70s that broadcast networks are afraid to touch today. Thanks, FCC.

Amazing how television has changed. A lot of issues addressed on broadcast TV then you couldn't have now. Even a lot of show on then I couldn't imagine being produced now (All in the Family or Good Times). But at least TV includes more minority and homosexual characters.
