I guess AA isn't as anonymous as they claim to be.

But seriously, those guys need to chill on the coffee and cigarettes. Either that or buy a TON of Tic-Tacs.

It's easy to look at someone like this woman and say "why the hell would you go to the hotel room and put yourself in that position?" But according to the article that guy was in something of a position of authority in the AA group. The psychology of perceived authority is fascinating, look into the Milgram experiment - I mean those perfectly normal, rational people took actions that, had the shocks been real, would have killed someone, all because a man in a white coat told them to do it.

Deep down, I think some of us want to hurt someone, not out of vengeance but sadism, but we are afraid of the repercussions.

I also wonder how knowledge of the Milgram experiment and similar research influences results of other experiments concerning acceptance of authority.

I also want to feel some breasts, but this is less related to power of authority and more power of the demon booze boobies.

nburghmatt: with all that strong coffee you never know what those motherfarkers will do. they were probably up for 3 days.

I never got this, AA members drink a shiat ton of coffee though. Which seems ass backwards, since I abuse the fark out of alcohol to relax, not to get active. If I want to get active, meth is cheaper than alcohol around here, but I prefer coffee since it won't keep me up all goddamn night, just make it hard to sleep.

/really, I don't get meth abuse and I've had more than my fair share of it.
//Really? WTF? I like gaining a night of study once in awhile, but the initial rush makes me edgier than a 12th century sailor on the end of the world.

It actually is.

13th stepping is when people in the program 'with some time' try to help unsuspecting newcomers and garner sexual favours.

Vangor: I also want to feel some breasts, but this is less related to power of authority and more power of the demon booze boobies.

His authority had nothing to do with why he wanted to feel her up, I was referring to her decision to meet him alone at a hotel room. As for Milgram, he was sort of the grandfather of this particular field of social psychology, but since then there has been much more research. As for how his results influenced this research, well... it STARTED this research, so a lot of it is piggybacking on his work, as well as some who have replicated and analyzed the exact experiment (bringing into question whether it's really about authority, as Milgram theorized, or about internal vs. external locus of control. I would argue that the two are very closely intertwined, so perhaps it isn't so much an "either/or" situation but some combination or perfect storm of external locus of control and perceived authority. It seems especially important to consider this with Milgram's experiment considering his experiment was inspired by the trial of Adolph Eichmann... but I digress) but there has been plenty of research independent from Milgram's experiment as well. Go find a social psychology journal at the library and check it out, man, as I said, there's a lot of it. If one is to follow the thinking that it's about authority AND external locus of control, remember that this woman was in AA. What's one of the first things you have to do in AA? Admit to being powerless and give yourself over to a "higher power." So between him being an authority figure and the external locus of control inherent in those who would benefit from AA, there's your perfect storm that led to a bad decision, and she's frankly lucky she got out of there and it didn't go very badly for her.

JonnyBlack: I never got this, AA members drink a shiat ton of coffee though. Which seems ass backwards, since I abuse the fark out of alcohol to relax, not to get active.

Your confusion is because you're thinking that addicts abuse alcohol just because they're looking for the feeling it causes. There are a lot of reasons alcoholics drink, and that isn't even the most important one.

Recovering alcoholics drink coffee because they're trying to replace a damaging addiction with a less harmful one. Addiction is an almost inseparable part of their lives, and not only in a chemical sense. They have ingrained behaviors that are geared towards always having a drink in their hands, and it has become fundamental to their socializing habits. It's the same reason that people trying to quit cigarettes often chew gum. The gum obviously doesn't have the same effect, but it satisfies the oral fixation.

The in-joke is that sleeping with your "recovery sponsor" if they are attractive to you in that manner is the 13th step.

batcookie: His authority had nothing to do with why he wanted to feel her up, I was referring to her decision to meet him alone at a hotel room.

I was more relating my comment back to the thread than something about inevitable abuse of authority. I mean, this is Fark. All threads tend towards boobies. Threads about boobies should be double about boobies.

batcookie: As for how his results influenced this research

I think you both misunderstand my pondering (how knowledge of his and similar research influences willingness to obey authority, which I have not located a study on but admittedly I lack the vernacular for psychology databases) and make assumptions about my understanding of some basic psychology. I am not suggesting psychology has agency and disassociation from the act wrong, just commenting "perfectly normal, rational people" are anything but. People generally have to be willing participants on some level for such exploitation.

This, this, and more this!

I never get tired of watching people while they are in pain, emotional or physical. The only thing preventing me from torturing people (physically) is that it might have negative repercussions on me. I find I have to fake almost all my emotional reactions except maybe hatred and disgust on a daily basis .
