I swear before I read the article, I thought "Mining Project" was going to be a euphemism.

Might have been better served in Geek, vs Business. Unless he hits uranium or something.

/quite possible in Sask

I'd be more impressed if he had developed the machines to do things autonomously.

Imagine what a pack of small autonomous diggers could do to change the mining industry.

true 'nuff.. and it wouldn't be TERRIBLY difficult to do with today's off the shelf technology..
But as a R/C and home robotics fan myself.. I gotta give it to the guy.. Dude is just chilling out after his days toil and digging out his basement, at 8 cubic feet a year.. with his thumbs, Sounds like a colossal waste of time.. and to most people.. it is.. But I'm sure that it Is very zen like for him

Sissies have zen gardens, Saskatchewanians have mini mining equipment. now give it a couple small cameras and let me do if from my couch on a computer, watching porn and we're talking!

Let me be the first to say this is a photo hoax.

Those small, lightweight diggers have neither the leverage nor the durability to extract soil that compacted. Also, there's no evidence of radio control gear anywhere.

Show me some pics of those machines with their covers off and mechanical guts exposed and then I'll merely begin to consider it possible.

Things are not as they appear.

Would a video of him pushing and going varooom, varoooom do it for you?

You're right, they've discovered the entrance to Fraggle Rock.

I take it you missed the four youtube videos embedded in the article?

You can click through the linked page to this one^ which has a lot more videos, or go to the youtube channel itself^ and watch them. There's 150 vids showing how he breaks the dirt up and hauls it out. And yes, you get to see the controller he uses.

I saw the controller he uses. you can see it breifly in the attached video. looked to be a standard 16 channel digital 2.4g

and.. If I'm not mistaken those are actual scale hydrolics and not Linier servos he's using for the actuation..and that shiat is NOT cheap whatsoever.

in fact.. here ya go... Garden trucking dot coms 1:14.5 scale Caterpillar Hydraulic excavator. (new window)

WEDICO - Caterpillar Hydraulic Excavator Model 345 D

1:14.5 Scale

Complete Assembly Kit #3120 consisting of:

Upper and lower vehicle sections, chain drive with 2 electric motors, lower vehicle section in classic H-shape, driver's cab and super-structures, raising and excavating cylinders, hydraulic pumps with tilter and 174 psi (12bar) operating pressure, three control valves, hoses, T-pieces lock bushings, hydraulic oil, electronics with light and sound system, loud speaker, batter pack 12V 2.7Ah and speed controller.

The model distinguishes itself with its very high wrenching and braking-away force capabilities. As was the case with the CAT 966G II and CAT 740, this model is also manufactured out of die cast aluminum, aluminum sheet and high quality plastic material. All metal parts, including the hydraulic cylinder, are powder coated.

Using those machines properly, large or small, is not easy and takes a lot of practice in addition to the experience that comes with knowing what to do in changing situations.

I'm not saying it is impossible, but I get the feeling that you'd need people running around 24/7 watching them like hawks.
