I was always told you never ever slam Narcan. Titrate till the breathing improves, code 3 to the hospital and let the ER docs worry about it after that.

I'd say if anything the opposite is true. The guy is a mouth-breathing moron, so he's taking heroin. He's also doing it in stupid places, like around cops; it's not the smack that's to blame for that; he's a moron. Be just as likely to be doing something else illegal next to a cop.

All the criminals one sees get arrested are the loser criminals.. Lots get away with something as innocuous as getting high. So, if you're an easily led moran, all you see is dumb criminals getting arrested and erroneously reason that they all must be dumb. (insert logical fallacy in Latin here)

Well, think of it this way. How would you like to be woken up? Gently with a nudge, or having icewater thrown in your face.

Slamming NARCAN is like throwing ice water on that person. It's generally regarded as "Not being nice", as it immediately and completely removes any intoxicating effect of heroin for the next 15 - 30 minutes by blocking the Mu Opioid receptors and inactivating them. There's really no harm in doing so, although it has been known to make OD patients come up swinging. I learned of the glory of being such an asshole on my Paramedic clinicals, when I watched a Fire Medic do it to a regular Overdose patient.

I do exaggerate, though, just to seem like a bigger asshole than I am. I don't slam it. I usually titrate to the level of effect of semi-consciousness, just enough to keep their drive intact. I'm nicer than I try to put forth, and I don't really like wrestling with a pissed off junkie till I get to the ER

You know, subby... I could not think of a better time to do heroin. :P

I used to work with people who did heroin at work.

Had to watch this movie in middle school/high school called heroin kills. It was this shiatty homemade movie about this kid who went down to Baltimore to get heroin and over dosed 'cause he came addicted after doing it once or something. I never did heroin 'cause I despised that movie so much.
