After reading the headline, I thought some silly local militia planned to raid the town's National Guard Armory.

Darth Lucas?

I'm sorry, but wealthy NIMBY homeowners are never the valiant rebels.

2012-02-11 04:40:15 PM
Yeah, because NIMBY syndrome is exactly like fighting an oppressive regime.

Man On A Mission: Darth Lucas?

don't look at me - i'm Darth Mordilocks.

"The neighborhood association said they'd like to work with Lucasfilm to help them find other locations in Marin County, closer to the commercial corridor along Highway 101."

Negotiate in LucasFilms' moment of triumph? I think the homeowners overestimate their chances.

Remember the last homesteaders that went against the Empire?

Nice moisture condenser you have there. 'Be a shame if something happened to it.

The rebels in Star Wars don't look poorly funded at all. An Imperial officer even complains that they're too well equipped. The Rebel Alliance looks like a legitimate military force.

Nothing I've ever read has made me more pro-George Lucas than this article.

Marin county residents are poorly funded? Ha, that's a good one

2012-02-11 05:21:27 PM
All change is bad and should be STOPPED!

If they were proposing to build a copper mine there I would understand. But this is just BS.

2012-02-11 05:23:19 PM
I'm sure Lucas would have no problem moving everything to L.A, or Canada.

2012-02-11 05:26:10 PM
I hope Lucas sells the land to a huge condo developer.

2012-02-11 05:26:33 PM
You'd think that a building for ILM folks would be more dynamic than an impossibly boring cliche vineyard chateau.

/disappointed

I never thought I'd be for Lucas, but I am.

" Star Wars Trilogy". heh.

So he wants to build a Naboo looking production studio? They should stop it on that reason alone.

2012-02-11 05:34:26 PM
Oh, Judas Priest on a Kawasaki moped. This is just the same old NIMBY stuff we see all over the country. But it's a big deal because a filmmaker who's made it big (we'll ignore the hideousness of Episodes 1,2, & 3) is involved. Bugger off.

2012-02-11 05:35:26 PM
Either buy out George Lucas's interests in the area, convince him to voluntarily move elsewhere, or STFU.

2012-02-11 05:35:49 PM
If only there were some weakness in Skywalker ranch that they could exploit. It wouldn't need to be much, an exhaust port no bigger than a womp rat would suffice.

In truth, they don't care about the building or the traffic. They just want to stop Lucas from making any more Star Wars sequels, prequels, revisions, etc...

/If only

I don't understand the distain for the home owners. Seems a bit un-empithetic. And I wonder if its from the renter crowd. I don't think I would like it if I spent a lot of money and effort to make a home for myself and some jagoff wanted to put something like that in.

I'm for anything that stops George Lucas making any more films period.

"When the plan was passed in 1996, everybody had George Lucas stars in their eyes and whatever he wanted, they were happy to give,"

That all changed when they saw "The Phantom Menace".

2012-02-11 05:44:36 PM
I can't imagine the traffic when they have to go into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters.

2012-02-11 05:45:52 PM
Maybe they realize the ranch is just one big sarlacc pit

you asshole, you farked up my joke.

"Other residents say Lucas has been a stellar neighbor and a steward of the land who has protected massive swaths of agricultural acreage from housing developments, while bringing jobs and tax-paying residents to the community. However, this sentiment was quickly retracted after the residents saw Episode 1 in 3D."

Mentat: I'm sorry, but wealthy NIMBY homeowners are never the valiant rebels.

xanadian: Yeah, because NIMBY syndrome is exactly like fighting an oppressive regime.

Star Wars had a Princess and a guy who was technically the son of a Queen (dammit prequels). Only Han was like us normal Joes (and technically he could have taken the reward).

what with website that size their pages for 800 x 600 and then don't scale. i'm getting real tired of having to use my zoom feature.

...No, I'm with the NIMBY homeowners. If you want to build anything bigger than a one-story house on farmland, you really need to be able to handle questions about environmental impact. Someday, we might need that land, and Lucas is not worth wrecking it over.

/Sure, they're assholes, but they do serve a purpose in the circle of life.

According to non-cannon novels he was the abandoned son of aristocrats.

/the writing actually wasn't painful to read and they were pretty clever tying into episodes IV,V, and VI

I own a home. And I understand the desire to keep your neighborhood just like it was when you were a kid.

But in this case, it sounds like they ALREADY had a big-ass complex in the area, they've been good neighbors, and have considered most of the potential problems (noise, traffic, pollution etc) that expanding the complex would create.

So fark 'em.

2012-02-11 06:01:01 PM
Here's what I took away from the article:

George Lucas is the victim and his neighbors are mean, so, go see Star Wars: Phantom Menace 3D, now showing at a theater near you. Check local listings for locations and show times. This was not an ad for a bad idea.

2012-02-11 06:02:29 PM
GoldDude: I hope Lucas sells the land to a huge condo developer.

They could compromise and develope something usefull for everyone involved.

Maybe a racetrack or a bowling alley or even a Walmart.

Maybe a Walmart with a bowling alley inside it and the whole thing is surrounded by a racetrack.

/just throwin' things out there...

2012-02-11 06:04:49 PM
If you look closely at that picture of the proposed ILM Campus, you can make out what appears to be a 2 meter wide thermal exhaust port in the main building.

2012-02-11 06:08:13 PM
Flying Lasagna Monster: Nothing I've ever read has made me more pro-George Lucas than this article.

I'll say. It says 95% of the land has been restored/protected/left undeveloped. They're expanding his film studios a little after 30 years of being there, not building an oil platform or condos.

It's just a bunch of HOA/NIMBY yuppies who are paranoid that any change to the area will lower their property values (or prevent more crappy movies).

/the Star Wars prequels are what happens when you surround yourself with people who don't have the balls to tell you to your face 'No, George, that's a stupid idea'

2012-02-11 06:15:34 PM
Red Shirt Blues: I can't imagine the traffic when they have to go into Tosche Station to pick up some power converters.

Maybe they'll just catch a ride to Anchorhead. They can catch a transport from there.

jagec: All change is bad and should be STOPPED!

It's actually not. The one road that goes to his and everyone elses property out there is Lucas Valley Road. It's one lane in each direction and as it is can be screwed up, especially when you get an imbecile who can't seem to do the speed limit or use a pull out or the spandex cockroaches are riding abreast. Lucas would be doing his neighbors and people trying to get to other points in west Marin by building his new DeathStar closer to 101.

2012-02-11 06:16:34 PM
Imminent domain in my galactic plotline? Noooooooooo.....

2012-02-11 06:19:39 PM
But the plot thickens. Other residents say Lucas has been a stellar neighbor and a steward of the land who has protected massive swaths of agricultural acreage from housing developments, while bringing jobs and tax-paying residents to the community

I think I agree with this group.

fark you NIMBYS

The area is not exactly rural, it borders suburbia directly. In fact, every one of the homeowners complaining live in McMansions built in the last 10 years or suburban development build in the last half of the 20th century. They aren't exactly farmers or ranchers. Lucas is known around here as the guy who buys the abandoned gas station to make it a park. He bought out a dilapidated building by his home that a guitar store has been in for decades and had a new nicer building built down the road in a better location that he will allow the guitar store to continue to do business in at the same price. He will make the area he bought into a park.
Thefacilities he built at Skywalker and Big Rock ranches have staggered start and finish times to lesson the impact on the commuters, there is never a back-up on those roads, I work by them and they are great neighbors and you would never even know they were there unless someone told you.

fark these pricks.
