i'm honestly expecting this to happen to us here in the US. if the Occupy movement continues to gain momentum this year and starts making progress....yeah, I could see the fedgov and/or a couple corporate types deciding to just cut internet access in certain regions.

It would be interesting to see if Facebookers, MMORPGers, and Internet porn fans unite.
That should account for just about everybody.

I know that a LOT of people were interested in how Iran went about shutting down social media sites and tracking down political dissidents via their web activities. I wouldn't be surprised to see if a couple/few people here in the states put their heads together and started figuring out how to isolate US citizens from the web.
great times to live in, ain't it? Granted, the Iranian dissidents have it worse than we do but there's enough oppression here in the US to give us both common ground.

Well that seals the Iranian government's fate. Instead of having ordinary folks being placated by the internet, they're now free to wander around outside and get angry at the situation. It's how they did it during the Arab Spring.

Iran is starting to look a lot like China. Both countries seem to have a large, educate middle class that you'd expect to revolt at any second -- but culturally they're both so severely self-repressed that it probably won't happen.

Protesters have been shot at, brutalized, and given life threatening injuries for nothing more than waving signs at politicans who didn't like what those signs said. Granted it is not currently the policy of the US government to execute political dissidents...but we certainly grant the cops plenty of leeway when it comes to shutting down political speech that might offend the 1%.
Give it time. we'll get there.

Unfortunatly I think he maybe right about that. Considering the BART blackout, the distain of public officials and LEOs for public recording, the presedent set by social media in the Arab Spring, and the anything goes nature of national security, we could be a large popular protest away from a media crackdown. I would not put it past the government or industry to censor things and use questionable justifications to do so.

I have really been wondering where the tipping point would be. I think we are definitely a lot closer since 2000, but I think we are still a long long way off.

1) make peace with Israel.
2) develop nukes
3) tell USA to step off.

I don't think they have to do a lot of work in getting the media to censor themselves. Newspapers don't have the money to do real investigative journalism and television and radio are all about entertainment.

The "impending Israeli attack" has been going on for about ten years now. Every few months Israel is about to bomb Iran...
Before the elections (ours, theirs, Iran's)
After the elections
During Ramadan
At the end of Ramadan
During the Spring
During the Summer
During the Fall
During the Winter
Before the IAEA inspects
Just after the IAEA issues its report
Somehow they never seem to. But every time it happens it lets people ratchet up the "ZOG! Filthy Jooz! Murderous Zionist animals!" rhetoric another notch. And the fact that Israel continues to not attack Iran never seems to make a difference to the braying chorus of asses.
Besides, as far as it goes Iran is at war with Israel. It has an officially-stated national policy of destroying Israel and killing every Jew in the world. And it's absolutely unapologetic about the fact that Hamas and Hezbollah are its proxies whose sole purpose is to destroy Israel and kill Jews. Not just Zionists. All Jews. If Israel attacks a country with whom it is at war I fail to see why it should be singled out.
Also note that the IAEA finally, with much embarrassment, issued its report on the Syrian site Israel bombed a year or so back. The conclusion? Yep. It was a nuclear installation. And yep, Syria lied about it.

Sad but true. We kind of deserve the results of our acceptance of shody journalism, the thing that's supposed to serve as a watchdog for the public. I want to slap all of the talking heads like Anderson Cooper for taking themselves seriously
