I think the real divide between conservative and liberal/socialist thinking is that conservatism is the ideology of adults. Adults want to be free and left alone. Liberalism is the ideology of children who want to be taken care of.

Liberalism only thrives when there is ignorance and immaturity.

Adults know that people are counting on them, that they have responsibilities. It's teenagers who want to be left alone. Republicanism (can't call it conservativism, 'cuz it ain't) only thrives among people with the emotional development of a whiny teenager.

I can't say I have heard of liberals calling for suspension of the rule of law or free elections. Republicans during the Bush Jr administration seemed quite content with it though.
