Is this really a fight you want to pick, R-tards? Really?

In case you haven't noticed, many women are sexually active, and the really like birth control.

Fark it - it's your funeral.

RIP GOP

Let's just hope that Catholics and the Pope, don't exercise their authority to legislate health care insurance policy.

I would love to see the Catholic church throw its wait around in a futile attempt to change decision based on women's health. It will give Americans pause before electing a devote Catholic (or a Mormon) for that matter.

America needs a good old pussy strike. American women: I hereby call on you to stop having any form of sex with your Republican boyfriend, husband or pervy church leader. If you are simply a beard for your closeted Republican companion, force your vagina on him as much as possible.

Do it right and the US will become so socially left, it could join the EU. Or become something like Iran. It could go either way I suppose.

The Obama administration issued a declaration on Jan. 20 that religious institutions, such as Catholic hospitals and universities, would be required to offer free birth control to employees as a health care benefit.

here's the thing - most american catholics ignore the church's rulings on birth control. they don't talk about it much, and i'm sure they secretly approve of this health care provision. And I think that's really what's got the clergy pissed off. Obama hit a nerve with the Church leadership, and kinda just blundered into what's been a quiet sort of cold war between Church doctrine and reality.

So of course the Church is gonna hit the roof over this. it's something they started off being very touchy about. Especially when the rank and file here in the states don't really grok to Church doctrine on birth control. At best, most sexually active catholics pretend to follow the rules, but in reality most use birth control and don't really consider it a sin no matter what the Pope says on the matter.

So, where are the people who were so terrified of Kennedy becoming President because they feared Rome would dictate policy? The Catholic Church is demanding that we adapt to their antiquated, bullshiat oppressive rules. How the fark is the religious right not screaming this one down? They want the Catholic Church dictating US policy?

Pates, who was recently elected chairman of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' office for International Peace and Justice, which, among other things, works to promote religious liberty around the globe. "We need to take this out of the political sphere. This is a human rights issue that is not intended to be politically aligned one way or the other."

Religious liberty, as long as you agree with them, otherwise you're oppressing them by giving people the option to use birth control. But yes, because you're raising hell about this, it's the President's fault that this is in the political sphere, not your fault for putting it there. And it is a human rights issue: you're trying to take away human rights!

Just...ugh. Someone needs to, at minimum, punch this guy in the dick.

2012-02-11 01:03:11 PM
Considering that Catholics have been wrong about EVERY major issue in politics/culture/science for the past 2000 years or so, why do people still listen to the man behind the curtain?

2012-02-11 01:03:35 PM
Most folks are missing the underlying HUGE point here:

Once again, Obama gets the 'Conservatives' to argue the 'Liberal' view: That separation of church and state is a fundamental and very important part of the fabric of American society, outlined right in the US Constitution.

Even if it costs him politically, we are all better off now that that's settled.

GAT_00: They want the Catholic Church dictating US policy?

At this point, I think the various theocrat factions within the religious right (here in the US I mean) are united against Obama and what they see as the 'demon lefties'. so they're not going to break ranks UNTIL they get Obama out of office, and sweep as many Democrats, libruls and enemies out of office as they can manage.

Once that's done, then you'll see fractures along doctrinal lines.

To be fair, if I recall Kennedy did give a very public speech on the matter saying he does not and would not bow to the pope.

I don't remember Santorum or Rmoney doing the same for their respective religions.

FTA: "I was really surprised the government would try to force any church to act against their conscience," Bognanno said. "This is a very arrogant and bold step for any government to take. This is intolerance."

Ladies and Gentlemen.....one of the 2% of Catholic Women that will never in their lifetime use birth control.

It's awfully nice she could break away from her busy schedule to speak for the other 98% of women that will, in their lifetime use birth control, and will obviously want to pay for it out of pocket.

That's just how the Catholic church is....they're always looking out for each other.

It's ludicrous that this battle is happening. Eight states put forward the same thing and no one said anything about it. But suddenly we have a week where the Down breaks a new high since the crash, unemployment is down and everything is starting to look up.

So what's a Republican to do?

Manufacture outrage.

Santorum is openly campaigning on a christian dominionist ticket. Romney and Perry seem a bit more circumspect on the issue...but only just barely.

It's not intolerance, or otherwise unacceptable, for the government to make it easy for someone to do something 'immoral'. If that were the case, the government could do absolutely nothing. Because every action, in someone's eyes, is immoral.

Indeed, every action and the opposite action is immoral.

Gay sex is pretty consistently immoral except it is perfectly cool to hang out exclusively with men and rub each other's feet with expensive oils. Touch their peener and you've definitely crossed a line (unless it is a for the purpose of torture and then there is some latitude in certain religions).

I SOOOOO hope they go all the way to November with this nonsense. I hope they never stop crowing about how evil Obama wants all women to have access to low-cost or free contraception.

For every fundie who gets out to vote R on this issue, the Dems will get the votes of 2 women who have never voted or were planning on sitting this election out.

also possible...and not mutually exclusive of my earlier point. it's very possible that a bit of both situations could be occuring here. God knows, the Church isn't above a bit of politics every now and then. they've been around for centuries, and they know their way around the public relations scene better than most.

I'm ok with this.

Members of a celibate order, please lecture real people about life. Tell them about sex.

Explain how a person who has actually *lived* a lay life should take your life as an example, because... Well, you understand it, right, through some divine providence? There's some explanatory passage from Exodus that goes further than "Go forth and multiply?"

There isn't. But those in God aren't exactly with you.

I think you're setting the stage for the next major reform.

Just wait... I can see it now, vast windowless prefab blockhouses, dimly lit by the blue glow of thousands of computers, hunched over by Chinese derp-farmers, who toil 12 hours a day without bathroom breaks. They manufacture the outrage that Americans can't or won't do for themselves!

Actually, that would explain a lot of the Politics tab... Holy shiat! Has anyone looked into this?

But...I do.

Human beings are not meant to be celibate, and the celibacy clause came about as a way to keep priests from leaving wealth to their families. The result of a LIFETIME of sexual frustration will inevitably lead to a portion of these people taking sexual advantage of the weakest people they can find.

Yeah, that's it right there. I remember growing up in a Catholic family, even back in the 60's, there was this weird division of Catholics in our churches. There were the New World Catholics and the Old World Catholics. We second, third and fourth generation Irish, Italian, and other European Catholics looked at our first generation relatives and neighbors as kind of quaint relics. They were the ones who still put ashes on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday, pinned palm crosses above the doorways on Palm Sunday, and wore kerchiefs on their heads during Mass. They still believed in the infallibility of the Pope, even though there were cracks in the plaster even among them. The rest of us didn't really take much of it seriously at all. Most of the old timers knew better than to really push the issue.

The funny thing was the influx of a new phenomenon - Third World Catholics. During the 60's, we saw large groups of Latin Americans moving into our cities, and these Catholics were much more hardcore than the Old World Catholics. Of course, rather than embrace them, the Old World Catholics segregated them into their own churches with masses in Spanish. So as the Old World Catholics died out, the gap between official Catholic teaching and actual Catholic practice became something best not spoken of. Now, I think most European descent American Catholics are of the Stephen Colbert variety.

Obvious but also something that they should be reminded of at every turn. The head of the Catholic Church literally facilitated the rape of young boys left in their care. I really can't see how they could possibly ever take the moral high ground on any subject ever again. They have a very short window to replace this Pope before he dies. That's a minimum but there is much more they need to do otherwise the Church should die with this Pope.

Whenever anyone takes a moral position on anything, the first question should be: "Did you every facilitate the rape of children?" If the answer is "yes", you should be able to kick them in the teeth and send them on their way.

/Roman Catholic who was confirmed by a Cardinal (never been molested/raped myself but this problem was rampant in Canada especially with kids whose lives were already a mess). It has been going on for hundreds of years with the support/facilitation of the Vatican.

With half the news filled with Sandusky and the various trials of Catholic priests, something uplifting from the high moral ground had to fill the other half of the broadcasts. And I guess if you're closing your schools for lack of money, you need some political clout to get you the keys to the treasury.
