The girls got a better lesson in why discrimination sucks. I feel bad for the boys.

Meh, in fifth grade I would have been grateful for an afternoon with no boys around. They were still gross at that point.

By all accounts, the movie the boys saw pretty much sucked. I don;t think either group got off lightly.

I heard the movie sucked. Maybe the other movie was substantially better.

Akeelah and the Bee? It is.

It's not discrimination, the only female pilot ever was Amelia Earhart and look how that turned out. No sense inspiring these girls to try it also when they can instead be inspired to sound out words like 'stereotype' or 'prejudice.'

In Texas, it's illegal for white girls to see black men in public except on the first Sunday of each month (as that was traditionally the set time for slave auctions). Don't blame the school district, they were just following the laws.

I think thats the point the poster was making- the girls movie was better

Am overt Wave like lesson in discrimination, well done Dallas Independent School District well done. I'm surprised the girls weren't left behind to bake cookies. Sounds like an administrator made a decision based on headlines without all that pesky reading and consideration.

If both movies are worth watching, then both movies are shown to all the kids*. That would kind of be the good thing to do, no?

* oh god the internet has polluted me: ALL THE KIDS!! with that badly-drawn nearly-stick figure... oh gods...

I'd rather watch a shiatty action movie than a movie about a god damn spelling bee. I see it as a lesson that the school district is going to punish you no matter what you do.

2012-02-11 12:31:23 AM
the school district also spent $55,000 on tickets and transportation, when they could have probably bought 100 copies of a better movie or a documentary on the subject for less than $1000, or just waited 9 months until this very shiat hits the bargin dvd bin at walmart.

A spokesman for the Dallas schools says only the boys were taken because space in the theater was limited.

What kind of half-assed excuse is that?

Oh right, Texas.

Imagine if one of those girls got her period in front of the whole school while at a movie called "Red Tails"?

The school district just saved some girl from a lifetime of an unfortunate nickname.

2012-02-11 12:36:17 AM
Because, you know, there are no other movies about discrimination available. Certainly none in the public domain or easily accessed online for the classroom.

In the 9th grade our government teacher took us to the local insane asylum in Axtell, Nebraska. Boy howdy was that an experience. Today's schools wouldn't allow it.

I was going to say the same thing. I don't even understand the logic. How does less seats mean don't send the girls?

2012-02-11 12:41:36 AM
I like the movie Akeelah and the Bee. It has Laurence Fishburne (Morpheus himself) as a spelling coach preparing Akeelah for a spelling bee. If you like "teacher" movies, like "Coach Carter", or "The Freedom Writers" you should see it.

2012-02-11 12:42:18 AM
No. You don't want impressionable girls seeing that movie because god forbid they *gasp* get turned on by Black men on the big screen. Then *double gasp* think it's OK to be in a relationship with them.

Corralling a bunch of young, impressionable white girls into a darkened theater to see a movie about some of the greatest heroes of WWII... and strong, handsome black ones at that?

We ain't having that sh*t. We just ain't.

While he would never admit it I would bet money the principal made that decision because he was certain the schools white parents would call in with exactly that kind of objection.

9beers: The girls were the lucky ones, that movie blew.

I couldn't agree more. The girls were the lucky ones. The train-wreck in the beginning of the film is a good metaphor for the whole movie.

Red Tails was absolutely typical for a post 80's Lucasfilm project. Boring two-dimensional characters. Awful, clunky, corny, awkward dialogue. Pathetic story-construction where nothing makes any sense. Uneven film tone. Ham-fisted directing. Ridiculous and disctracting use of blatantly-obvious CGI. Awful pacing. It felt like it was edited by a robot.

My favorite part was the appearance of the "We'll have lots of time for all that stuff after this next flight" trope.

Step aside Lucas. Time for you to just be a finance guy for people who know how to make a compelling film for current audiences

/Still can't believe Lucas had the cajones to go on The Daily Show and say that this was one of the first all-black action movies ever.

Not to mention she was hiding from the Nazis the whole time. I find the whole thing hard to believe.

He says the airmen's story offers lessons for boys and girls.

to the boys "be all you can be"

to the girls "the men are hungry, where are their sandwiches?"

Not to worry, they can watch a better film on the same subject. 'The Tuskegee Airmen', from 1995 with a better cast.

Might as well take any kids you can to learn about the Tuskegee Airmen before they're wiped out of the Texas history books.

Reminds me of a fifth grade CSB. We were planning a field trip to some kind of farm, and were told in advance that at midday the class was to break off in two groups: some of them to cook stew, the rest to press apple cider. The cooking group had only eight slots, and my female teacher assigned all seven girls in the class to the cooking group. Then she asked if any boys wanted to be the eighth person to cook. 14 of 16 boys raised their hand. To her credit--and believe me, I don't credit teachers from this school for very much at all--the teacher decided that wasn't fair and instead let the people who scored the highest on a recent test choose. I had the highest score and conveniently avoided the drama by choosing cider press. The next eight slots all went to boys as well, and so the whole kitchen was staffed by boys, meanwhile all the girls were stuck outside with me pressing cider. (Trust me, this was not a good thing for me, but I conveniently avoided that drama by getting sick and missing the field trip.)

I know it feels good to you if you can point out racism in the unlikeliest of places.
take the kids to a movie about black heroes but leave some kids at school? must f*cking be racism! I mean yeah, if you are that god damn racist that you wouldn't want females to see black men there's no explaining why the f*ck you take anyone at all to see the stupid f*cking movie. nevermind that this is a majority minority school. but logic never once played a part in your in your first 40 years of life, did it! that's what makes you so f*cking special!

listen dipshiat, Dallas ISD is only 5% white. they aren't doing anything over there for the 1 white set of white parents out of 20.
so get your head out of your ass and think next time. everyone else was kidding. you were serious. you f*cking moron.

They just would have used the money they saved to buy a football scoreboard.

This was the front page of the Dallas Morning news . (Bottom half)
Top Half was the expanding role of women in the military.
