Well, in Greek households, the citizen women most of the real work. They ran the household, were in charge of domestic accounting, ordered the slaves around, did the weaving and milling, etc. They had no role in public life, the men did all the voting and jurying and had sex with boys. But their economic contributions were recognized and they could sometimes own property.
