Good to see the conservatives in Canada are just as petty as their American counter parts.

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand I'm disappointed, but not surprised, that a conservative member is acting like a 5 year old. On the other hand, I'm glad they aren't acting as bat-shiat insane as their American counterparts.

Cheers

Except the Canadian Senate has no actual power. They are a symbolic branch of the Government and in that context the bickering is even more stupid. It is like arguing over who gets the better air guitar.

Those Canadian politicians are soooo much worse than American politicians.

I favour Senate reform, but sometimes I wonder if the NDP are on to something when they propose abolishing it altogether.

I actually called the guy and left a message with his secretary about how thrilled I was that my appointed officials are acting like children, and the PM's close personal friends get to use the Senate to act out their petty tantrums.

Dude was appointed by Harper, which means he only got the job because he's a loyal Conservative ass-kisser.

Good thing they are the ones in charge of redistricting, they are already drawing imaginary lines.

All legislation from the House of Commons has to pass the Senate before it gets Royal Assent. Likewise, anything the Senate comes up with has to be approved by the House. They're appointed rather than elected, but they're hardly symbolic. The only thing the can't do that the House can is originate a bill that involves money (or something along those lines).

And do we really want to give complete free-reign to the even more partisan and grandstanding House of Commons?

I mean I know the senate looks worse now because the Con appointees are the ones controlling it, but the same thing is true of the rest of parliament and nobody is suggesting abolishing that alltogether.

I wasn't advocating anything, just indulging in some instructive pedantry.

We could always try, I dunno, not electing dickbags? Granted, that means finding some non-dickbag candidates first, but it's important enough to put the effort in.

Worse than that, it means finding non-dickbag voters first!

The best part is that, since our Senators are appointed, we can't even vote these dipshiats out.

This is a ceremonial rubber stamp. Legislation is never blocked in the Senate. Don't get wrong. The Senate does some very interesting and important committee work but they have no actual power.

That's not strictly true anymore. Back when the Tories still had a minority in the House, Harper ordered the Senate to block a few bills the House had passed. They shouldn't have listened to him because they're supposed to be independent, but they're his cronies, so they basically do as they're told.

So awesome. This strengthens my argument that Parliament should be dissolved and the Centre Block turned into a giant concert hall/bar/dance club, save the Library which stays exactly as it is. The other blocks will become housing.

I think something like almost 1/3rd of everything you sell is bought by us and like 1/5 of everything you need to buy comes from us. We are your largest trading partner.

We might be stupid, but we certainly aren't irrelevant, at least not to you Americans.

oops my bad, it's more like 1/5 and 1/7, not 1/3 and 1/5.
We really are stupid... but still your biggest trading partner by far.

I'm not saying we don't benefit from your existence...how else could we have come up with such cinematic genius as Strange Brew?

/just teasing. poking fun at your gov't gives us a brief respite from wallowing in the oppressive sadness of watching our own.
