If that's the case, then we'd better lower the standards again so we have more students who can enter those fields.

Let's have a round of applause for the Department of Education!

This is nothing that (throwing even more) money (and bureaucracy at) cannot fix (eventually, right?)

Cultural aversion to intellect? Check. Religious dogma over scientific rigor? Check. In short, I blame the Fark Politics Tab for this national tragedy.

Andrew Wiggin: i apparently think 3 inches = 10 inches.

You sound disappointed. Another eHarmony related misunderstanding? Next time ask him to give it to you in metric.

It is plain to see the way to get ahead is either be born rich, be willing to whore for rich/politically connected people, or have absolutely no ethics beyond "I'm getting mine and I mock the trusting people who were dumb enough to fall for whatever bullshiat I'm shoveling"

Why would anyone even consider being honest or hard working?

We tried to help the girls catch up, but it was easier just to sink to their level.

So you don't blame the dumbing down of education because it is better your snowflake feels good about himself than actually measuring how much he learns.

It's the participation trophy culture of li realism that is to blame. Some kids are dumb and need to be held back.

Fark science and math. I'm personally seeing just how miserable science and math can make a person.

MyRandomName: So you don't blame the dumbing down of education because it is better your snowflake feels good about himself than actually measuring how much he learns.

I would think that would be part of cultural aversion to intellect. At least in that it's placed at a lower priority than self-esteem.

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
'The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light'
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe and saw

In Texas, well our little corner of it, they are introducing a new standardized test this year.
We used to have the TAKS test. Now it's going to be the STAAR.

My son's 4th grade teacher apologized to parents b/c the test is hard.

Even the teachers think the kids are too dumb to do it.

/My son did quite well on the practice tests. His teacher said that they weren't expected to pass it. He got a 95 on the math and a 89 on the reading.

Wow, the article is almost nothing like the headline here. Great jorb, subby.

Every college administrator and politician seems to go on and on about needing "more scientists and engineers." Frankly, the STEM fields are pretty crowded as it is. I can't blame people for wanting to avoid it.

Why work when mom has a basement and will pay for your car, food, insurance, etc. Why study hard stuff, when step-dad has an internship with your name on it waiting at the law firm?

There's also may be an effect from emphasis on being seen as clever, rather than being seen as working hard.

I got straight A's on my last science test.

Easy as pie, every answer is God did it!

Well, except we all know the earth was created on Sunday 23 October 4004 BC.

Someone needs to buy that girl TMBG "Here Comes Science" ASAP. Normally I'd say "that has to be fake", but unfortunately I've had a similar experience (CSB WARNING). I was dating a girl in college and one day she and I went to help a friend of hers move. She had a double-axis globe, so I held it up, flipped it so the South Pole was up and said, "if the first mapmakers had been in Australia, we might look at the world this way". She adamantly insisted that it was dumb for the world to be displayed any other way than with north being "up". I tried to explain that there was no right-side up or upside-down in space, but she refused to accept the idea. She seemed pretty intelligent otherwise, but I knew right then that this wasn't going to be anything more than casual.

I remember when I was younger when I first heard that Australians looked at maps like that I thought it was silly but then it made sense. I know have a few Aussie friends and some of the things we would randomly talk about is funny. I even took the Simpsons Australian Flag and photoshopped their faces on the butt. Good times. Sucked when they moved back there.

Does anyone else agree with the right brain/left brain theories? I have struggled with math and numbers my whole life. But I can write well and prefer words to numbers, and I'm fairly artistic but not very analytical. I have a friend who is a math genius but could not write a decent paper to save his life. We helped each other through school. But it always bothered me that no matter how hard I studied and practiced math I couldn't retain it, but I could find grammar errors in word problems in my pre-calc book. I always liked science except for the math part. I would have my group crunch the numbers and I would write the report.

Since no one is going to read this thread, I think I'll hijack the conversation a bit...

The time dilation predicted by the special theory of relativity is dependent upon your velocity as a fraction of the speed of light. The actual function, however, can be derived solely from the good old Pythagorean theorem. Spooky, I find it.
