I just showed this to the wife, who's a neuroscientist. She said one of the theories for savants is that they've reverted to a more "primative" type of wiring that would be similar to some primate brains (the tradeoff, of course, being no social skills).

Well that would explain the poop flinging

Is that number thing randomized or is it just throwing the same few dozen screens at him? After a while of doing it anyone would be able to recall familiar layouts. Would still be impressive.

Yeah, but can he pick football games better than Ron Jaworski?

Hrmm does anyone have any information on how long they had to train him to perform that test? Looks like they started by putting up numbers on the screen and leaving them there until he clicked them all in the right order and got a snack as a reward

I have a feeling that we'd be able to do it with just as much ease if we had to sit in front of a screen and press numbers in the correct order over and over.

http://games.lumosity.com/chimp.html - here you can play somewhat of a clone to the ayumu memory test.

In the first set I I did horrible, the numbers were going to fast. I averaged 2 correct
I played it again and it felt like I could track the numbers faster, I averaged 7.

/Ayumu averages 8 correct. (probably does better now, this was when he was 7)

I have nothing useful to add except that this sentence bothered me immensely.
FTFA: "" Continue reading for the video. "

An equally good question would be why they used a YouTube video of a poor recording of a BBC video instead of just embedding the original source (Link, new window).

Can anyone tell me the name of the piece of music at the beginning? I've heard it somewhere else. Beginning of an album maybe?

Nevermind, it's 'Prelude' by Bonobo off his Black Sands album. Great album, btw. If you like him, check out Quantic as well.
