Can you imagine the "I told you so's" if we're true?

Syria is looking like a bigger mess each day too. Hope these reports of chemical weapons are untrue but there is precedent in that area of the world using them.

If Syria uses chemical weapons on their people, Russia and China will have no choice but to pull their support of the government. Without their support the UN will be able to pass resolutions allowing the forced removal of Assad from power. It would also further separate the Arab populace from Russia and Chinese because their backing of Assad would have made it appear that they gave Assad cover to gas his own people. Thus making the US less hated in the region, and shifting that hatred to Russia and China. Enough actions like this by those two nations and the generation of terrorists might decide Russia and China should be the target, not the US.

no, and neither does anyone else, because they weren't. syria likely has had its own chemical weapons for some time. if that butcher assad uses them on his people, though, he's asking for invasion or at least a predator assassination.

at this point, i think he's probably gone too far to negotiate a deal anyway, except maybe exile in russia. and if he gases his own people, even that won't be a viable alternative. i don't know what the endgame is here, but i do know that it'll be soon, and it'll be bad.

GAT_00: Come back with a source that isn't known for bullshiat, OK?

To be fair, Israel would rather have an Assad government then a populace government. If anything it's in Israel's interest to have a long civil war in Syria because that would drain the coffers of their Iranian backers. The use of chemical weapons by Syria would only hasten the overthrow of the government.

Don't forget that the Iranians have moved 15,000 troops into Syria to help put down the uprising. And Syria has a client-state, Lebanon right next door. And next door to Lebanon is...Israel. This has the potential to get very, very ugly.

Do you honestly think Russia and particularly China give a crap? If the wholesale slaughter of innocent people were a problem for them, they would already be on board.

Well, I remember administration boot-lickers making up a story about imaginary WMDs being secreted into Syria in a desperate attempt to salvage the closest thing to a justifiable excuse to wage an otherwise illegal and disastrous war. I also remember them trying to pass off milk tanker trucks as mobile WMD labs.

It's haaretz, but the original claim was put out by an Iranian opposition group, so I'm not really sure how reliable it is.

It's okay, we'll just charge the war in Syria to the Chinese credit card. It's not like it'd strain already strained relations with China...

...no, wait, they support Syria. We're farked.

Good job, neoconmen.

Besides, if the Bush administration knew the WMDs went to Syria, why did we just fight a 9-year war against Iraq? The mission, before the goalposts got moved umpteen million times, was to get rid of the WMDs and get rid of Saddam. The WMDs went missing and Saddam has been dead for some time now.

No. They've been fighting since Moses arrived.

More recently, from 1948 to 1973 the entire area was in mostly a constant state of war. Not terrorists or the occasional rocket fire. Real war with front lines and combined arms battles involving thousands of troops.

The only thing that calmed the waters was Sadat's moderation of Egypt and the fall of the Soviet Union (which cut off arms to the Arab side). Despite what the peace and love farkers think, the Arab spring's going to return the states in that region to authoritarian governments with a militant islamic/anti Israel bend and while it doesn't equal the old USSR, they're gaining new benefactors in the form of an Iran, China, Russia triad.

It isn't the end of the world, just a return to the normal 20th century state of affairs.

umm... you do know that Haaretz is a leftist paper in Israel?

also

From the BBC on 2/6:Under the constant shell-fire, people were becoming slightly hysterical: The army was "about to attack with chemical weapons"; The army was "already invading with ground troops".

Neither was true, though one credible eyewitness said he had seen troops moving up to the edge of this area.
(new window)

which if you compare with the sub-headline of the Haarestz article,"Syria's military has begun stockpiling chemical weapons and equipping its soldiers with gas masks near the city of Homs, opposition sources reported on Thursday." Isn't that different

Opposition forces fear chemical attacks, neither says anything about Iraq or that such an attack has happened. Headline Fail

You know, this is a good example of the complete idiocy of Israel bashers, to wit:

1) Haaretz is an independent newspaper that's even distinctly to the left. In fact, when the rumor when around that Netanyahu had said it was one of the chief enemies of the country, it was repeated because it was considered a credible thing for him to have said.
2) The sources were Syrian opposition figures, not the Israeli government.

FlashHarry

The actual article says nothing about the chemical weapons as having coming from Iraq, that was just snark from subby.

But it is kind of of a tradition in Syria. Bashar's dad used chemical weapons on Homs in the 80's - ~10K killed was the figure I remember quoted.

I dont think so, they dont think that rationally (see suicide bombers and their supporters). We have been going to bat for muslims since Bosnia and they still dont appreciate any of it. China and Russia actively go after muslims in thier countries and still are loved by muslims because they are not "great satans"

2012-02-10 12:18:20 PM
I am sure the relevant people in the Assad regime can read Link. The people in power likely feel they have nothing to lose. Even if they don't use WMDs they are certainly not going to step down. Any option available to them besides crushing the revolt ends up with them dead in the street or in the Hague. The potential political cost of using them is probably the only thing stopping them now.
