I've had boiling water sprayed on my face and while it was unpleasant and a lot of skin peeled off, I prefer that over the migraines I get from missing out on coffee. It actually healed faster than bad sunburn.

Here's an idea.

Stop being lazy, wasteful farks and brew the coffee yourself. Apart from the waste these things generate, the coffee is pretty much shiat every time.

Sounds like a night of bumping uglies.

My stepmum just went through that whole recall sorting thing yesterday, and we've a bunch of espresso packets to return. Oh well, at least they'll send replacements.

We only use the machine when guests come over that like coffee- we're a house of tea drinkers and well aware that we suck at brewing coffee.

Almost like you can't build a machine to safely handle the temps and pressures required for $80.

Can't beat speed and convenience. I haven't got the coordination or patience for a French Press before my morning coffee. Coffee made from K-Cups is inherently weak, but this is functionality we're talking about here, not luxury.

Would definitely prefer a proper cup of pressed java.

Well, if they add a shot of Jameson's, then it's drunk, if they add some grape soda, it's drank.

My machine is part of the recall. Never had a problem but maybe I'll stand back until they send out a fix.

in case it hasn't been made clear, those 'things' are NOT "coffee makers" . . . fark me but I can't believe anyone actually buys that shiat. There is more actual waste, both by volume and mass, then there is product in those little cups. And it tastes like stale, watery, shiatwater

/yes I know what shiatwater tastes like . . . but don't ask how

2012-02-10 12:50:06 PM
and please don't talk to me about convenience. I can make a pot (12 cups) of automatic drip coffee in my real "coffee maker" in less time than it takes to make 2 cups of shiatwater in one of those things. I tried it at my mom's house last year when she got one.

/don't bother sending them back just throw them out

2012-02-10 12:53:38 PM
and the cost?

the best price I've seen on those triple packaged cuppy things is 6 bucks a dozen

My local roaster sells organic fair trade coffee from all over the world for 8 to 12 dollars a pound. I can make between 8 and 10 pots of coffee from that, or over 100 cups.

/and I make my coffee strong
//so it tastes like coffee, you know?
///not shiatwater
////fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

The waste part is what gets me. How can anyone in their right mind buy a coffee solution that requires individually packaged pods? It's ridiculous.

Actually, our Keurig started shooting hot water with the lid open last weekend. I don't know what caused it. It was in the evening and no one was using it at the time, I had turned it back on after the auto off setting and had left it on. I think my wife did get burnt trying to get it shut off.

She blamed me since I left it on and I shrugged it off as a bizzare fluke, but I guess it could have been more serious.

You mean meter. What are you, Canadian?

Oh and @Jument. The kind of person who drinks no more than one cup per day is the type of person who doesn't want a 4-12 cup coffee maker or have a can of grounds open for six months.

It would be a stuip investment if I drank more. When I do (holiday or early morning road trip), I use the french press. And gasp! those individuall vacuum packs. The horror, the horror.

I work at Bed Bath & Beyond and all of our Tassimos went missing. I knew there was a recall but I didn't know why, now I do. Not that it matters, we sell Keurig over Tassimo 100:1 and that's no joke. Not a huge upset really.

2012-02-10 03:22:40 PM
I've had my Tassimo for over 2 years and I love it, but it didn't take me long to spot the design flaw. If you put the disc in crooked the lid will only go down half way and it punches a hole beside the spot where the hot water is supposed to be pumped into the disc. If you then straighten it and try to use it the hot water and grinds are pumped out the superfluous hole and all over the gd place. I just make sure the disc is seated properly before I close it.

What model?

Mine is the 50ish$ Mr. Coffee machine ... the ultimate in small and cheap as I didn't want to spend on it as I wasn't sure how much use or how much my wife would like it (it was for her as I don't drink coffee).

So far, she enjoys it a lot, and I've got the hot chocolate and a green tea for me to try... It's not really worth it for those, just got them to try it, but for her, she enjoys the various flavours, and I got the regular coffee adapter.

We do find it better than having a coffee machine on all day, with coffee going to waste most days anyways and the cleanup being a pain.

I'm sure you drive a 12 mpg SUV and have a great rationalization for that as well.

In all seriousness, I think that much waste for a cup of coffee is obscene. IMHO the fact that many people can't or won't see that is why we will eventually pollute ourselves into extinction.

Me, I have a DeLonghi which grinds the beans from a hopper and makes coffee with a single button press. It's obscene for other reasons, but on the plus side it produces no waste. Beans keep for weeks in my cupboard, as far as I can tell.

How can they recall them if they don't know who owns them? Their registration page has been broken for YEARS: http://consumerist.com/2012/01/tassimo-offers-free-coffee-to-registere d-customers-then-wont-register-anyone.html

I suppose somebody could have actually mailed in the card... but who would have a stamp, or know how to operate one?

This. (My original appeal towards the Keurigs is that you CAN get a reusable K-cup to allow you to use your OWN coffee and tea rather than pre-packaged stuff. That said, it certainly seems to not have the design flaw that the Tassimos do.)

/likes being able to make a single cup at a time--allowing me and SO to have a cup of coffee or tea, or of different coffees, or different teas
//and yes, loose-leaf tea works just fine in a reusable K-Cup--basically it's pressure steeped
///why yes, I do have enough tea and coffee to survive teh zombie apocalypse AND World War III :D

With most of the stuff (like Tassimos and Gevalias and such) and a fair amount of the pre-packaged Keurig stuff, yeah, I'll agree with you...that said, the Keurigs DO have a reusable "K-Cup" you can fill with your own coffee or tea (some Keurig-compatible brewers like the Cuisinarts come with it, and you can buy it as an add-on for the cheaper Keurigs and Keurig-compatibles). And, at least in my testing compared with a regular coffee pot, I've not noticed a real difference in quality between "Keurig brewed" (which is pressure brewing, it's basically how espresso is brewed) and conventional brewing.

(Interestingly, I actually got the Keurig AND reusable K-Cup as a means of reducing waste; instead of brewing an entire pot that may not be drank completely, just brew a cup or two at a time. Seems to have worked well so far.)

You can sometimes even find 'em cheaper than that, but yes, this--and, for our dear folks who worry that I Is Killing Teh Planet And Guatemalan Schoolchildren With My Keurig:

a) The main reason I got the Keurig is YOU CAN USE YOUR OWN COFFEE WITH IT AND DO NOT HAVE TO GET THE PREPACKAGED CRAP (which IS wasteful in packaging, I certainly agree with that)

b) The main stuff I use in the Keurig are organic fair-trade coffee I get at a locally-owned coffee shop that is NOT farking Starbucks (in fact, my local coffee-shop is part of a cooperative of fair-trade coffee shops) OR fair-trade tea either gotten at aforementioned coffee shop or purchased at locally owned and operated teahouses in other parts of the country.

c) Said coffee ground and tea remains (which turn out to be less waste than from a conventional coffee maker, as I only fix what is needed/desired at the time) go ultimately into a compost heap, and later into the garden. :D

d) The reusable K-cup is a metallic filter, similar (really, identical, save in scale) to reusable filters for conventional brewers. I've not noticed any major differences in flavour with the same coffee in a conventional coffee-pot and in the reusable K-cups. (Now, it'd probably be different if it were in a French press, but that's what I use for camping. :D)

e) I also grind my coffee fresh and buy in whole beans, and yes, they do keep for months in bean format :D (My only difference is I grind it in smaller quantities.)

I saw this story first in the French press.

Drip pot for the low acid (Kona) blends, french press for some other coffees, a moka pot, a vacuum brewer, hell, I even own an ibrik and a mill that makes coffee into talcum powder for it. Never will use a K-Cup or similar.

Even in the darkest depths of hangover and no sleep, I can stagger to the kitchen looking like an extra from a Romero flick, and get a caffeine fix. At the basic level, it's no harder than; apply filer to basket, grounds to same, water to tank, close a lid, slide in a pot, and hit a switch. There is no excuse for a K-cup type machine.

2012-02-10 10:59:34 PM
Good to see the reusable cup. But most people I know who have the machine use the quick disposable cups. One girl I know thought she was being environmentally friendly because she recycled the plastic cups.

Err....yeah.
