I think it would be great knowing that there would ne awkward hookups within frontline units. Imagine just how carefully you'd have to conduct the preparation and execution of a mission with your ex breathing down your neck. Then when you get a new hottie in the platoon, you'd work extra hard to impress them.

Soldiers are going to be distracted with sexual thoughts anyway at times. Why not turn the natural need for some tail, or betterthe yet sexualto jealousy and rivalry, into a motivating force?

The saddest thing about the whole farking controversy is that this is not the case of the military bowing to outside pressure. It's them looking internally and realizing that if you already have women serving in forward positions (giggity) in an informal manner, it's better to make it official. That way the women get the credit they both deserve and need to advance in the military.

Something that perplexes non-Americans is the apparent inability of folks in the US to take a look around the rest of the world.

It's particularly odd in the 'XXX serves in combat/the military,' because for many years, or even decades, most US allies have had openly gay service members and women in combat units.

Therefore any US soldier that has served in a UN or NATO mission has already had these experiences. They've served with openly gay soldiers and women in combat roles. Routinely.

Yet, American politicians endlessly speculate about 'unit cohesion' and other nonsense when there is actual empirical evidence literally a phone call away.

Let me help you end the debate. I served in a unit with openly homosexual colleagues. It causes no issues whatsoever. None. None. I served in a combat role alongside female soldiers and officers. There were plenty of hookups, and marriages, etc., but I the net benefit and inherent value was higher than any net cost.

Now then...Mr. Santorum speculates on the potential negative impact of women in a combat situation. He, I'm sure, was also in the camp that predicted the immediate and catastrophic impact on US defence of the repeal of DADT...so, what's changed...anything? No, of course not. These idiots were completely, totally wrong then, why even wonder if they may be correct this time?

We've had marriage equality in this country for more than a decade. Do you think that the sanctity of Canadian marriages is any less than it was before? Do you hear news stories of massive hetero divorces, of kids 'turning' gay, of people marrying animals? No, of course not...so why all the 'debate?' The matter is settled...you're just too focused inward to notice.

I have never fought on the front lines and neither has Santorum. Most of us have never seen how troops respond when under fire. He should probably leave the issue of military relationships up to the commanders. Regardless of his point, speaking in hypotheticals only makes him look sexist.
