We really should just start burying people vertically. It would just be so much more efficient.

I am trying to decide if this will make is easier or more difficult for zombies to rise.

Bury them head first. If a zombie can dig backwards then it deserves to eat my brain.

I always thought they should bury people face down, so when their relatives come to visit, they have a place to park their bikes.

Bury them with the top of their coffin sticking out as the "head"stone and have it translucent so visiting the cemetery really does give you effing nightmares.

Personally, fail to see a problem with 'stacking' the corpses. I mean, when you go to the cemetery to visit passed loves ones, you don't dig them up every time now do you.

Then again, I would also like it if whoever has to deal with my dead body decides to test the aerodynamics of a dead body, and launch me from a cannon repeatedly.

Now I'm not saying this story is a fake, but I do have some doubts about it.

She just happened to be visiting during the funeral.

The mother just happened to have been buried at double depth.

And there were flowers on the grave that showed it was obviously AN EXISTING GRAVE and the diggers just tossed them aside without asking whether or not they should even be digging there?

I just don't know about it.

Don't do that. That'll just mean we will be overrun with Chinese zombies a few years later than expected.

What I took from this is that it probably happens a lot and this one time the woman just happened to show up at exactly the right moment to catch it. I doubt this is the first or last time this happens.

I'd rather see all this burial crap come to an end. Ceremony is fine, but seriously... it takes a lot more space to bury your fat old uncle than it does if you cremate those who have deceased.

The mother was buried at double depth specifically so that another coffin could be put there - her husband's.

I sometimes wonder where all the bodies are.

I mean, billions of people have died in the millennia since we started burying them, yet you don't see cemetaries everywhere you look. Why isn't the countryside outside every major city littered with burial plots?

Yes, I am aware of that. That information was in the same sentence that said she was buried at double depth. I'm saying I just find it odd that the gravesite they got wrong just happened to be one that was buried at double depth.

Having worked for a few cemeteries as a groundskeeper during my student years, I can see this happening, especially in the older ones where the surveying wasn't done right. A stone will be pulled up too in anticipation of the second resident (for engraving). It is likely someone pulled the stone and brought it in to the processing area and the new family never saw it.

EvilEgg:

I am trying to decide if this will make is easier or more difficult for zombies to rise.

Even if the grave is buried in by shovel, the weight of Earth of a standard 6ft burial is enough to ensure that any zombies that rise from the ground are 2 dimensional. If that flat mash actually became conscious and animated the zombie apocalypse would look a lot more like a side-scroller than an FPS at a grave site.

Perducci:
I sometimes wonder where all the bodies are.

Cremation... less and less people wish to envision their mortal remains pounded into the ground with a backhoe.

Perhaps they keep all the double depth ones in a single section, for easy access for the digging machine or to avoid accidentally digging directly into a coffin and body if they get it wrong

You might not, but believe it or not, at least with mausoleums, some folks did. A prominent citizen of Virginia in the early 1700's used to check up on his dad from time to time. And a New England loyalist who went to Halifax in the 1780's who was too rich to be called insane had a glass top installed on his wife's coffin so he could still see her. He had her buried properly after she was no longer something you'd want to look at.

The daughter visiting her mother's grave was because it was the second anniversary of her passing away.
