So its just a million off the asking price is what it boils down to.

Yeah, forget that. It's like a $100 million lottery ticket where the prize is $1 million.

The people of the lower west side in Manhattan just lost their hospital with a 161 year history, and will soon get a luxury condominium development instead.

FTA: The hospital's attractive location

I wonder why all the hospitals in attractive locations seem to be tanking?

In Dayton, they took an empty hospital and turned it into a bunch of independent offices. There weren't a lot of tenants when my center first opened, to the lab manger and I would run around the building requisitioning everything that wasn't nailed down. And at one point we got a crowbar, so we got a few things that were.

What I'm saying is, looting is kind of awesome.

There's an old shut down nursing home for sale near where my wife works. If I had the cash, I'd buy it up. Not sure what I'd do with it yet; that town is one big HOA. It's zoned residential, but I'd get lynched if I turned it into a cheapy apartment complex. It was build in the 60's, so there are probably some abatement needs, plus it needs to be rid of the old person/urine smell.

A place as large as that could easily be remodeled as a mixed use apartment/professional office building with some small shops and restaurants on the ground floor.

Actually as I recall, the Feds own quite a few large buildings that could be put to some better use (heh, like Congress). Someone ask the Republican presidential candidates what to do about them.

In line with the hospital in NYC that got turned into condos for those who made their living from the arts: How about renovating it into upper end condos for those who a) are in the health care field - minimum wage nursing home aides all the way through brain surgeons, or b)any frontline municipal worker, cop, firefighter, social worker, sanitation worker, teacher. Yeah, that's soshalizm, Fark You.

Anyone holding elective office is immediately disqualified.

This is an upscale urban neighborhood (for Buffalo). Buffalo has had problems with vacant and abandoned buildings in other places, but this is a prime piece of real estate that someone will do something with.

As for people asking "why not put a hospital there?" the reason is that it is being made redundant by all the new facilities and expansion at the Roswell Park medical corridor just a couple miles down the road.

I vote for conversion to condos/apartments.

Dig under it and lower the entire building enough that the roof goes down to about 50 feet below ground level, then make it into a secret underground lair.

To riff off of the paintball theme, this would be awesome for story based co-operative laser tag or paintball. You could get large groups together, hire a bunch of people to be actors like at a haunted house, and run scenarios.

Best scenario: Zombie Apocolypse survival. Start on the top floor and fight your way down against the zombie horde. They only have receptors on their heads, so you have to get the kill shot for them to fall. They could pop out of rooms all over the place and chase the group.

You could also run military style room clearing scenarios with hostage situations and the like, or massive team based sweeps of the facility.

Zombie Games.

The survivors get only what they carry in with them and what they can find for seven days. They run out of paintball ammo? They lose and die. They run out of food and water? They lose and die. The team argues and splits up into little groups? They lose and die.

All televised over CCTV feeds. Best reality show ever.

/be kind of fun to have 'zombie' as a job description on a resume
//be even cooler to have 'zombie lord'

Given the economic picture for commercial buildings nationally, I'm hardly surprised that no developers bid on this one. It's hard to imagine that the "Price reduced by 1 million dollars" sign out by the street will help much.

We've been travelling around the country a fair bit recently, and I've been amazed at the number of "see-throughs" everywhere we've been.

Serious answers:

Old hospitals are being moved out of largely because they're old buildings that don't work well with modern medical technology. Same thing happened at the hospital I worked at about 6 years ago. They built a new location where they would be able to modernize the layout, put related services adjacent to each other, standardize patient room layout throughout the floors, etc. Doing the improvements this way was more economical and less intrusive to current patient care than trying to massively renovate the old structure.

And the old hospital building there has a new owner, too: an inpatient medical testing facility purchased the building to use as their testing site. While the layout may not have been ideal for treating ER patients and running an ICU, it has all the equipment and connections required for the testing group's work.

TL;DR version: Sell it to someone in the medical field that actually has piles of money to throw away. Like the drug industry. Or insurance companies.

2012-02-10 11:38:23 AM
Turn it into a refuge for mentally ill homeless people. Have several dozen edged weapons hidden in various locations, from scalpels to sabres. Have several dozen hidden cameras installed. Chain and padlock doors, drop food in from a helo once a day, and sell the footage from the cameras to whatever network pays me the most.
Am I a bad person?
