I like Conan a lot, but Ferguson is the funniest of the late night group by far. It's not even close.

Conan is on basic cable. Subby was claiming Ferguson is the best host on network TV...which is probably true, though he's not as good as Conan.

Conan has some of the funniest skits, the most random things that you swear will never work, but endure for years. The FedEx Pope, The *mhftbtn* Bear, In The Year 2000... all gold.
However, Craig Ferguson has the best opening monologue hands down, every single night. Every. Single. Night. It doesn't matter what the topic is, or even if he's being funny or serious.
Also, both do a pretty good interview. Kind of a toss-up on that one.

I just appreciate that Ferguson's monologue is nothing like the others. No poor "Did you hear,..." jokes with a bad followup punch line right afterwards.

Craig's one-on-one no audience interview with Stephen Fry was great. He should do that more often.
That and have Kristen Bell as a permanent cohost and get rid of Geoff 2.0 for a while. (weird random Geoff 1.0 (no live voice) was fun though).

I hope they aren't pulling an NBC dick move and keeping him around, subtly suggesting he's in line to take over "The Late Show," and then when the seat opens giving it to someone else.

They used to try a lot more stuff pre Geoff -- they haven't done skits, craig-characters, musical intros, etc. in a long while. Because now they just fill time with Geoff-banter instead.
So what was meant to be a deconstruction/parody of regular talk-show cohost dull meaningless banter has now turned into ACTUAL regular talk-show cohost dull meaningless banter.
unplug Geoff for a while.

Perhaps it is just preemptive sour grapes but Ferguson has repeatedly said he doesn't want Letterman's slot because then the network would actually care about and pay attention to what he is doing.

That was my point. Subby specifically said "network TV". I (and many Farkers) consider him funnier than Conan so I wasn't sure why subby didn't just say "funniest late night host on TV".

Which is kind of ironic, since this article is about them locking him up for a few more years.

Dave is Craig's boss right now, so in one way, I understand him saying "I don't want his job." Remember his thing when Dave was caught in the sex scandal? "Ooh, another late night host in a sex scandal?? This should supply me with jokes for weeks! It's MY BOSS? fark!"
At the same time, I'm not sure if he'd be able to do all of the things he does now (like the constant comedic cussing) in the earlier time slot. His whole "CBS doesn't care and forgets I'm even on the payroll" routine is part of his self-depreciating humor.

Honestly, Craig is the only talk show host who I'll watch. He's always hilarious, his interviews don't have the usual, "tell me about your movie" crap that most other shows do. You can see that his guests seem genuinely comfortable with him and actually have a lot of fun. Although I do miss the musical intros. The guy does a genuinely funny show and is there primarily to entertain the viewers, not to kiss the ass of whoever is on his show. I hope he doesn't get the Late Show slot, because they'll definitely control more of what he does and basically water him down.

I think you mean to say "broadcast" TV. TBS IS a network, just not broadcast. In fact, wikipedia it was the first basic cable network.
From wiki (so you know it's good):
"The first basic cable network, launched via satellite in 1976, was Ted Turner's superstation WTCG (Turner Communications Group), Channel 17, Atlanta. Turner subsequently obtained call sign WTBS (Turner Broadcasting Corporation), and continued to operate it as a broadcast station operating on Channel 17, Atlanta."

While that's impressive to know, I was more referring to how watchable the interviews are. Also, I can't imagine that Ferguson goes into those interviews completely blind.
Props to Craig all the same.

None of the late-night hosts, not even Leno, get very big numbers. The vast majority of people don't watch them and don't care.
