The Bicycle Blitzkrieg (new window)

Basically the British thought the only attack that could happen on Singapore during WWII was by the sea, since the northern area of Singapore was mainly swamp and shiat (nothing armor could get through) so they armed the whole coast for an attack. They had no idea that thousands of Japanese would swarm from the north on bicycles, overwhelming them in every possible way (remembered from memory, feel free to correct if I'm wrong anywhere).

That's when Vuon allegedly planned the attack on more than 100 police and soldiers.

Vuon attacked? Sounds more like self-defense to me.

The Vietnamese peasant class is amazingly good at guerrilla warfare. It goes all the way back to Tran Hung Dao who prevent multiple Mongol invasions of Vietnam (although Vietnam did pay tribute to make the Chinese and their Mongol overlords leave them alone). Dude took a bunch of peasants and fought back three invasions. His writings on the use of terrain were also studied heavily by Rommel and Guderian. Pretty good for a guy who evolved his tactics in the 1200s.

Goes the whole way forward to today. My father in law is a Nung who fought on the American side in Vietnam. Up until his eyesight failed he could drop cans from 500 yards away all day. Actually shortly after his family was relocated to West Michigan they had a cross burned in their yard. He went down to the local rifle range the next day with 100 cans and systemically set them up, then picked them off from 500 yards. The locals got the message and there were no future cross burnings.

You go back there these days and the locals are waiting for the Chinese to invade or their own government to go crazy repressive, so everyone is ready to dig out the black PJs and form a guerrilla cell.

/we picked the wrong side in that war

Lets see, A Communist government has land use policies which are incompatible with the idea of property rights and specifically with the idea that you keep what you work for. Sounds about right.

Oh and one more CSB:

My wife's grandfather was in the Viet Minh, as was her father. You started out with some second rate rifle around the age of 8 or so (often sawed down so you could handle it). Then around 12 or 13, assuming you did a good job, you'd end up with a captured French of Japanese rifle. Then once you made it even longer you got one of the guns we'd shipped over in the 1940s (yes the CIA [OSS at the time] supported Ho Chi Minh. He had is own advisers and we shipped him weapons). Later on the AK-47 became the premier weapon. When you turned 12 or so you got the Chinese knockoff of it and then around 16 or so you got a Russian one because they had better build quality.

The really dedicated cadres of the Viet Minh basically started out at age 8 being taught to shoot and expected to be accurate at up to 320 meters or so, which was about the effective range of the AKs they had back then.

In the late 1970s Vietnam invaded Cambodia due to the atrocities of the Khmer Regime. China countered by invading Vietnam in 1979. It was 400,000 Chinese regulars vs ~80k Vietnam Regulars and 150k reserves. Vietnam's elite units were down in Cambodia, so aside from some forces around Hanoi it was all reserves. China ended up with 25k KIA and 35k WIA. Vietnam had 30k KIA and 31k WIA. China ended up advancing something like 40km into Vietnam before falling back.

This guy is 49, so he would have been around 11 or 12 when Saigon fell. Chances are he wouldn't have been fighting the Americans; more likely any combat he saw would have been against the Cambodians or Chinese, which weren't guerilla operations.

There is land ownership in Vietnam.

Not everyone can afford to own land, so they rent it. Just like here.

There are a lot of very rich people in Vietnam who have started businesses and made a ton of money.

That's not really why Vietnam invaded Cambodia (more to do with the Khmer Rouge feeling their oats and attacking some border towns and occupying disputed territory). Not to mention that Cambodia was friendly with China at the time and if there is one thing historically Vietnam does not like, it is the Chinese.

Should have earned the IRONIC tag.

The vietnam war started when Saigon crooks took land away from peasants whio had owned it in some cases for 700+ years, and gave it to their cronies, telling people they would have to pay "rent" on land they already owned.

Filthy bastards. We backed the wrong side (as usual) and deserved to lose.

Basically correct, but the Japanese had help from the Brit commander, Gen. Percival (iirc)...who could have profitably been replaced with a parrot trained to screech "shoot the enemy" at regular intervals. That was more than HE did.

No, the Vietnam civil war came about after Uncle Ho went to Mr. Truman for his help in evicting the colonial French and Mr. Truman declined. Uncle Ho wasn't even a pretend socialist at the time.

There were no good sides in that war. It was a long-running regional pissing match between despots that the world powers eventually decided to stage their own larger scale pissing match in. The best side to back would have been to stay home.
