The study in bmj.com reviewed nine studies of 50,000 people worldwide who had been in serious or fatal crashes

All of which are invalid if you have no idea how many drivers are driving stoned. Which they don't.

Not according to research not funded by pharmaceutical industry hacks.

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......crash...shiat we hit something
oh, forgot to open the garage door dude

2012-02-10 12:22:51 PM
yeah but they're ten times less likely to want to drive so there's that.

Most studies used one nanogram per millilitre of cannabis or any amount greater than zero as the cut-off for a positive test result

That's not testing to see if the driver was stoned during the accident. That's testing to see if the driver has smoked any time in the recent past. "Recent past" may have been substantially long ago.

The wording of TFA prior to that quote already made it sound like a cherry-picked study, but that bit just pushed it way into the bullshiat zonde.

2012-02-10 12:30:26 PM
Screw that study. It's not the pot smoking. It's the distracted driving from trying to dip my pizza in ranch while parallel parking using one knee that really gets me.

2012-02-10 12:30:28 PM
No, you tested if people had smoked IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS, then cross referenced that made up number with more made up numbers from other studies in which you had no idea if people were intoxicated or not to come up with "OMG the weedz is going to kill us all"

"In the UK, 18% of people killed in road crashes have traces of illegal drugs in their blood, with cannabis the most common, Brake says."

Probably a percentage similar to, or greater than, 18%.

THIS.

Study should be re-worded to "drivers in serious or fatal car crashes twice as likely to have cannabis traces in their blood".

FTA"In the UK, 18% of people killed in road crashes have traces of illegal drugs in their blood, with cannabis the most common, Brake says."

Wondering, but too lazy to look it up for myself, what percentage of the population use "illegal drugs"?

18% does not sound like an incredibly large number to me. Also, how many of those were actually caused by alcohol, but reported as illegal drug" related cause any trace, from days/weeks ago might count. Far from a scary story.

does that include prescription drugs obtained illegally?

No Rush, you're good.

It is obvious how dangerous marijuana is. Their is no doubt, I'm mean it's illegal for a perfectly good, non-racist, reason, but you people are missing the real hard numbers, 100% of people killed in car collisions where in a car. If we make cars illegal we can stop most of these.

2012-02-10 12:40:36 PM
Welcome to the world of arbitrary limits. Do you think all people with a .08 BAC are drunk? Or might that vary by individual? When your targeted as a societal pariah logical discussion no longer matters. You will obey our rulings and you will like it.

2012-02-10 12:41:32 PM
Isn't there a study where they actually tested people and it determined that pot smokers tend to drive more carefully / slower than most people. I recall reading they had to keep reminding the participants to speed up during the testing

I'm not advocating driving under the influence but this story sounds like a bunch of BS

2012-02-10 12:41:38 PM
Well its because they have 1 hand on the joint and 1 hand trying to open the bag of cheetos.

2012-02-10 12:42:14 PM
If they just made more rules, we could live in paradise!

2012-02-10 12:43:36 PM
The study found a near doubling of risk of a driver being involved in a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious injury or death if cannabis had been consumed less than three hours before.
However, it added that the impact of acute cannabis consumption on the risk of minor crashes was still unclear.

so, smoking a little causes accidents, but smoking a lot doesn't?

/good job lou.

groppet: Well its because they have 1 hand on the joint and 1 hand trying to open the bag of cheetos.

You don't smoke joints in the car, they fall apart and the ash falls in your lap, causing a wreck. You use a one-hitter in the car.

Welcome to lying with statistics 101.

FTA:
"However, it added that the impact of acute cannabis consumption on the risk of minor crashes was still unclear."
But, not to worry, we will make something up real soon.

Their list of studies would indicate that smoking 12 or less hours before driving will make you less likely to die in a crash.
10%-18% seems lower than the percentage of users that drive.

Sorry, but laws unilaterally passed based on lies are not legal laws. Time to give it up.
Big Cotton does not need your help any longer. Anslinger never amounted to anything. Hearst is long dead(still need to kill his foundations), Big Tobacco is no longer deserving, Big Alcohol has done enough damage, and MJ certainly does not meet definition of a Schedule I substance.

just sayin'

I may not agree with legalizing marijuana, but even I see this study is complete bullshiat.

2012-02-10 12:53:25 PM
So what about the study where they made people smoke then drive and they did better then perfectly sober people?

Much more accurate study if you ask me.

2012-02-10 12:53:32 PM
Does this take into account the many teenagers whose safest (as in, not getting caught by parents/whoever) place to smoke is in their car?

2012-02-10 12:55:04 PM
It will be interesting to see how these statistics change once hash bars become legal in the U.S.

Pot smoking drivers 'twice as likely to cause car crash' as people smoking pot at home.

Not only that, but all of the cash in their wallets had traces of cocaine on them...

I can say from personal experience that this is BS. Also, I want cheetos.

DROxINxTHExWIND: BULLSHIAT

THIS!

I drive worse when I'm sober as I go into road rage if someone cuts me up. If I'm mellow, I don't care and I take my time, drive within the speed limits and observe the highway code... When I drive sober, I drive like a boy racer, Which imho makes me more likely to have a crash (In Germany, when mellow, I cruise on the motorways at around 90mph. If not, I'll drive at 140mph and overtake traffic on both sides)

/Bullshiat statistics is bullshiat

Well first off we all know anyone who rides, owns, or even touches a motorcycle is a drug user, so less then people. But it's a vehicle, I was using the word car as an umbrella from for all motorized street traffic.

2012-02-10 01:01:28 PM

FTFA:

If we gonna be assholes, then that means 82% of people killed didn't have any traces of illegal drugs. So sober people are worse drivers.

study is bs

Two things:

1) DUI is DUI, regardless of mind-altering substance. Much like alcohol, if you're going to puff, don't plan on driving for a while. Eight hours is a reasonable time horizon, just to be sure.

2) THC can take a really long time to leave the body; regular puffers will test positive for upwards of a month after last inhale. The positive test cutoff seems unreasonably low.

Don't be stupid, relax, and stay away from the vehicles and heavy equipment. Is that hard?

2012-02-10 01:09:48 PM
busy chillin': If we gonna be assholes, then that means 82% of people killed didn't have any traces of illegal drugs. So sober people are worse drivers.

Good point. If anything, it looks like more people should be taking drugs before they drive, so that they will be safer.
