While I agree, I would point out that HTML5 is a long long way from doing the gamish-stuff that Flash is most known for. So the end of free Flash games is really just the beginning of the $2.99 app. Win8+Metro will monetize that all the way to your desktop.

Owning a wide variety of tablets including a 64GB ipad2, I'd really like to know if other ipad owners actually bothered to try anything else before they bought one. There are legitimately better products out there.

The 8.9" Galaxy tab is significantly lighter, has a nicer and higher resolution screen and isn't hampered with the data segregation bullshiat imposed by ios. Its battery lasts approximately as long. There's no metric I can see that makes an ipad worthwhile in comparison.

Yes and no. HTML5 isn't exactly a game development platform, you're right, but the Canvas element is pretty impressive. You can do a ton with it, if not a full-fledged game.

I support mobile devices for a living and I disagree. Yes, there are some advantages to the Galaxy tab, but to say an 8.9 tab is lighter than a 10" tab is kind of silly. The data segregation thing matters to almost zero day-to-day end users, only power users who care or know what that means.

Apple's devices give a better user experience, imho, though that's very subjective. They also integrate with other Apple devices with incredible, tard-like ease. If you've got an Apple ecosystem going, things are smooth as silk.

You're right that people should try multiple devices to see what they like, I just take issue with your "Galaxy tab is clearly better." It's a subjective matter, and there are plusses and minuses to both.

I loved my iPad 2. It was a great toy, tool, and media consumption device.

However, Apple decided to break printing apps that I paid for in favor of promoting their AirPrint partners and technology. They also failed to make iTunes for Windows work worth a damn, despite years of people complaining about its sluggishness, memory hogging, and poor integration with Windows.

So I sold my iPad 2 and went all the way into Android... And I'm not going back to Apple any time soon. My Motorola Triumph is every bit as good as an iPhone, but it has a bigger screen and I can change the look/feel of it without needing to jailbreak. It's also pre-paid, so I'm not stuck on an awful, expensive contract.

I miss the size of the iPad 2, but the ability to output HDMI from my Triumph makes up for it.

So I'm done with Apple until such time as I see the iPhone's monthly rates become sensible. I currently pay $35 a month for unlimited data and text, with 300 talk minutes (and GrooveIP to use Google Voice for free VOIP when I'm at home). The lowest contract on the iPhone is what? $80 a month? F♥ck that.

Oh, yeah, and I was able to upgrade to 32GB storage after purchase of the phone because Android devices (most of them, anyway coughkindlefirecough) allow you to use SD cards.

And bonus! Amazon gives away a free paid app every day. That's cool, too.

So while I used to be an Apple fan when it came to the iPad 2 and iOS, Apple's rigid control of the platform, and their willingness to break paid apps in favor of promoting their own technology made me walk away.

And I was damned happy to delete iTunes from my PC and replace it with better programs (MediaMonkey, J. River Media Center).

Thanks for pointing me to that. I was using Vlingo and Google Voice Actions, but this seems better.

The only downside is that it doesn't support Power Amp for playing music via voice command. I hope they add that support soon.

I don't understand this. The iPad 2 was the same cost as its predecessor, the iPad 1. Nothing has been announced, but I am guessing the iPad 3 (or whatever it may be called) will have the same price point of its predecessor as well.

There's a bunch of tablets that run Windows 7 now, if you're ok with the thicker and heavier type. I'd go for the Thinkpad X220 if I cared about being able to draw on my computer.

Oh I see, you're being intentionally disingenuous.

The iPad 1 launched at a starting price of $500. A year later, the iPad 2 launched at a starting price of $500. The iPad 1 price was lowered $100 at the time of the iPad 2 launch because it was an older model.

But yeah, I can see how that $100 price drop constitutes the next model being, in your words, "double the cost of its predecessor"

AFIC that ICS is one of the first Android builds to make use of the GPU for accelerating the UI. Hence it appears smooth and snappy on the same hardware, it's also the reason the Apple stuff tends to be likewise with an apparently weaker processor; it pushes as much as it can to the GPU.

Yes. But it largely became subjective (screen size vs resolution vs keyboard layout, etc). In the end I plumped for the Apple offering as it was the nicest looking (when all of them do what you want it really boils down to look n' feel), it does everything I want something like this to do.

Cost was not an overriding factor in making the purchase but was taken in to consideration.

That makes sense. It's really is snappy. I feel like there's more to it, though. There was just so much to hate about Honeycomb. The browser always crashed, the keyboard was terrible, some apps just ran like shiat, you couldn't close apps without going into the settings or downloading an app-killing app, highlighting text was wonky and didn't always work... it just blew ass. The Japanese dictionary blew too. I think Honeycomb was Vista and ICS is Windows 7. They're really not all that different, but they're soooooo different.

It just bugs me that I had to have a buddy root my tablet to to get this experience. I suppose I could have done it myself, but I just didn't want to dick with it. Updates are one thing I do like about Apple's little walled in ecosystem. I bet if I had actually paid for this thing, I'd have cared enough to do it...

Hey guys, recently got my new iPad and that shiat is so cash. I love how smooth and sleek it is compared to all the other junk ive been seeing.

Anyways, i need to swap some files back n forh. No biggie just some books, pds, docs, stuff like that. I always sync with itunes but i gotta couple computers at work and friends n stuff id love to be able to share that cant have itunes or install other software.

So how do I do that without itunes? I saw some a coworker with a cheaper tablet that had one of those old SD cards, so i figure apple has a better way than that

2012-02-10 04:42:48 PM
If it really does have a retina screen, I'll be tempted to upgrade (I have someone who would appreciate getting my current iPad as a hand-me-down). The vast majority of what I do on it is read subscription periodicals as full high-resolution scanned images, and watch videos. And the resolution of the phone is awesome - I'll take that over a slightly bigger but blockier screen any day.

ChuDogg: Anyways, i need to swap some files back n forh. No biggie just some books, pds, docs, stuff like that. I always sync with itunes but i gotta couple computers at work and friends n stuff id love to be able to share that cant have itunes or install other software.

Alas, as far as I know at least ONE person in the transaction has to run iTunes (but if you have an iPad and run iTunes already, that one person can be you). There's no need to sync, you can drag and drop from any number of apps, but that does happen in a window inside iTunes.

I move around docs and books all the time, dragging and dropping them (including from one computer to other). So just move the file off the iPad onto a thumb drive with YOUR copy of iTunes and hand it to your friend.

There's no need to use the music and video players that ship with iTunes and don't let you drag the files off onto the computer. No need to jailbreak, either.

2012-02-10 04:48:00 PM
...I should say, in fact I use my iPad as a transfer device. I download the movie on one computer, drag it on my iPad (yes, using iTunes but not the built in Apple "video" app - I use AVPlayer HD which plays any kind of formats and lets you copy stuff off the device), then after I've watched it if I want to save it to my other computer, I just drag it off over there.

LasersHurt: but to say an 8.9 tab is lighter than a 10" tab is kind of silly

Oh but it's entirely relevant. Form factor matters. For its size, the ipad2 has a low-resolution screen - it's missing 230,000 pixels that most larger-than-7" tablets would have. At 600g, it's a bit annoying to use for an e-Reader. No worse I suppose than a hardbound book, but for a company that prides itself on human factors, I really think Apple has missed the boat with the size and shape they chose. There's also annoyances like the fact that the device by itself has only a single speaker and the general unfriendliness to customization and lack of useful free software that come along with having an Apple product.

Having used a wide variety of tablets from a number of different manufacturers, I'm utterly unimpressed with the ipad.
