If you need to check your tax return status every 2 hours, I think you might want to get treated for OCD.

It's for asking questions about how to fill out returns, kind of like how turbotax allows free question and answer sessions. Nice little feature

They don't put you in jail much, Subby, as long as you're still paying every payday. They just garnish everything else, and leave you five dollars a week to pay the rent, and eat on.

I have to hand it to the IRS - this and the "Where's My Refund?" desktop site are indeed kind of spiffy.

My eFile was kicked back because my SSN was already used on a return this year. I filled out the IRS identify theft form and faxed it over, but I haven't heard from them. Anyone had experience with this before?

We're going through that now actually. Last week my house was broken into, and we had about 20,000$ worth of stuff stolen, including a fire safe which had multiple years of taxes, a copy of my social security card, and my birth certificate. Kind of a big deal.
According to the IRS when I spoke to them yesterday, the best thing you can do is call in when your efile fails, and they can start looking at error codes and see where it was previously filed. Its a federal offense, so you could call the FBI at that point if they're willing to give you the IP.
You will have to fill out the affidavit (found
here
(new window)) and fax it in ASAP. The fax number is on the form.
Here's the IRS ID theft dept: 1.800.908.4490 (hit 1 for english, and then you hit option 4 and wait about 45 minutes for someone to pick up). The people you talk to are hit or miss, some could obviously care less, I was lucky and spoke to someone who actually knew his stuff.

You'd be surprised how many times the IRS screws that up. Someone (at IRS or some individual) mistyped the SSN and it just so happens to be yours.
Just need to mail yours in.

Just spoke to the identity theft department and they said just to mail in my 1040 with the 14039 in the same envelope.

This (or the equivalent website) would be a good way to do a "taxpayer receipt", which would be a good idea to get people educated about the Federal budget. E.g. [numbers made up, scale approximate]:
Your income and payroll tax liability of $12345.67 was spent on:
- $3019: Social Security
- $2212: Medicare
- $2048: Military
...
- $1.09: Foreign aid
- $0.03: NPR/PBS

That's odd. I didn't run into that problem when I used your SSN. Maybe try to call them or see if the fax # was correct.

The IRS, about a week or so ago, notified taxpayers that processing of the returns may take up to an additional 7-10 days this year.

Except that budget education is not a IRS function, and the IRS has enough money problems as it is. It would be cool if CBO released an app like this that tracked various budget proposals, but I'm not convinced that the wide release of that information without distillation by various middlemen adequately serves Congress's interest, which seems primarily to focus on hysteria and lies.

I checked another client I did on the 7th and it won't give a date for DD but it says they should receive it by the 28th. I guess 3 weeks isn't bad but the lag is going to get worse.

I got my return This past Tuesday, only 6 days after filing. I was kind of suprised because I was expecting it on Friday like years past. No indication from the state though.

I just put all my paperwork in an envelope and mail it to my tax preparer. Takes me 5 minutes, costs $400-ish. I sleep better at night knowing that my return was done by someone smarter than me.
Waste of money? Maybe, but the first year I went with a professional preparer he got me over $2k back on the previous years returns that I did with Turbo Tax.

I put mine through on the 31st of January. According the cycle chart, I should have got it on 2/8. When I checked the site 3 days later, it said the 14th. 3 days after that it said the 21st. Pulled my transcript and got a date of 2/27. Then on Wednesday the site showed today. Checked account today, there it was.

What's the deal with people and tax refunds? My W-4 is filled out to make my refund as close to $0 as possible because I'd rather have all my money than give the government an interest-free loan. Don't people know they can set up automatic regular transfers from their checking account to any other kind of account if they're afraid they'll spend everything in the checking account?

Then why not give up as little as possible and wait until the last day to pay up if you're worried about interest so much? It's really not that big of a deal and most people I know just like money to come back every year. If nothing else, I think they feel like it keeps the IRS off their backs.

Because you never know what tax credits they will keep allowing each year. Last year my state didn't re-approve a lot of the credits until the very last minute, and there was some talk that they weren't going to at all. Better to get a refund than to owe a lot of money unexpectedly. If I knew for sure how much I would owe each year, I would completely agree with you.
