I read a few then I decided I couldn't do it any longer, it's as if my brain suddenly cried out in terror then went silent.

Jesus Christ, these people are ridiculous...

"How dare she tell us that it's important to eat healthy! It's just like Nazi Germany!!"

Meanwhile, right in the same article:

About a quarter of entry-level candidates for the military are too overweight to serve or to make it through their first enlistment, according to the Pentagon. And the Defense Department spends $1.1 billion a year on medical care related to excess weight and obesity.

I guess being fiscally conservative only applies when we're talking about gutting welfare and anything that helps the poor.

It's a good thing because the article itself is completely devoid of rabid, irrational, hateful froth. I don't get it.

To be fair, most conservative males are giant tubs of lard and gas. Michelle Obama's quest to make Americans healthier is in direct contrast to their way of life. In the Real America, the only people that should care if they are skinny are wives since it's their job to make their husbands happy.

Is it too much to ask for us to just launch her fat ass off to the Moon?

So horrible for a First Lady to take on the cause of being the national 'Fat Nazi'. Why do First Ladies need a cause anyway? Can't they just be the President's wife and be done with it?

Oh, it's there. It's just not as apparent.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Hold the mystery meat: Military mess halls soon will be serving more fruits, vegetables and low-fat dishes under the first program in 20 years to improve nutrition standards across the armed services.

First lady Michelle Obama and Pentagon officials announced the effort Thursday during a visit to Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas, where the military has been experimenting with ways to improve the quality and variety of foods served on base. The first lady toured a gleaming cafeteria line, then announced the program in a dining hall filled with service members whose plates were overflowing with salad greens, broccoli and whole grains.

Picture the poor schlub in a combat zone:

First, OBummer takes away his combat pay because he isn't getting shot at every day. Then, along comes the First Wookie with C Rats which contain only veg crap!

Damn, maybe the best thing to do is just stand up and yell "Shoot me!"

I just don't understand conservatives. They really do live in another world where they somehow equate eating garbage to being a proud real American. We really need to go back to the civil war and let the south split off to its own country.

Calm down everybody. I'm sure that if it was Nancy Regan or Barbara Bush or Laura Bush doing this the right-wingers would be just as upset and it would still be torches and pitchforks time.

You know, that could be fixed really easily by not allowing severely obese people to join the military anyway. 50 pounds overweight sure since it can be lost pretty quick in bootcamp, but anymore then that and they should be sent packing until they weight a reasonable amount.

sigdiamond2000: God, the comments are a goldmine.

It's partisan hackery, just like Outrageous Muff or seideshwtodd, below.

As a conservative, I want my military in the absolute best shape possible, and ingrained with good habits. In the near term, that means better warriors. In the long term, it means cycling people back into civilian life who can hopefully bring those habits more into the mainstream.

Similarly, it's also why I oppose torture and using the military capriciously. Instilling solid civics and a knowledge of how we should carry ourselves internationally (and sundry other things) have much the same benefits.

I thought about joining the military, but I just don't have the disposition for it. Therefore, since as a civilian I control something without subjecting myself to it, it's my responsibility to make sure it's well treated, well regulated, and definitely not abused.

Might even improve the quality of the food. When I was in the Navy, C rations were a tasty break from the messhall.

jehovahs witness protection: I recall plenty of healthy choices in the mess hall. Are they going to start twisting arms or just remove all meat and form a vegan army?

There were plenty of healthy choices, otoh, I remember seeing boxes labeled "pork product" getting poured into the spaghetti sauce. Not sausage, not ground pork... just "pork product." I'm thinking that is something most of us could do without.

They claim to be desirous of a strong military, yet they don't want the service personnel to be physically fit.

Guess what, you just found out the reason these morons are making a big deal out of Mrs. Obama's health issue. It's not about anything that is ingrained in conservative politics. It's about the raw and utter hatred they have for two uppity democrats telling them they should think about being healthier because they will live longer and better. These people need hate as much as they need breathing.

Look at your own original comment, though. You're no less guilty than the tards railling against this because she's a Democrat. I stopped visiting the Politics tab here because it had become effectively equivalent to the Freepers, just with a Left slant instead of a Right one (politically, I mean).

If you're going to do nothing more than jump immediately into personal attacks on the other side, nothing is ever going to improve. Get out of the echo chamber(s) more and actually try to understand why people who disagree with your view do so. Even when you know people are dead farking wrong (Creationists, for example), you certainly aren't going to get them to stop erring if your whole response is to insult them.

To be honest, that's not how my grandparents remembered it, in my presence. All the causes she could have taken on, and she took on planting wildflowers... she was snickered at, or had eyerolls in her direction. Maybe my grandparents were in the minority, though.

Anybody else remember what happened with Lady Bird and her wildflowers, public reaction?

Can anyone make a valid argument that she IS NOT the most sexually attractive first lady we've ever had? Could any red blooded male honestly say they'd prefer the withered husk of Barbara Bush?
