fair enough. Al Gore is pretty god-like. ;)

But seriously, being mean/rude just makes me kind of sad. Sarcastic, oppositional, etc? That's alright, but I try not to be a dick about it. For purely self-serving reasons. Cause it makes me sad/upset to be mean to people. Even on the internet.

markfara: About 1/3 of Sonic Youth's output is indeed objectively bad. The rest ranges from amazing to merely good. (Seriously, "Rather Ripped" was one of the best releases of 2006.)

hehe ok fair enough. Admittedly I haven't heard the more recent stuff. I do recall them as being the band that you were supposed to like in college but I found it impossible.

Bloody William: I loved U2 until they started to suck around the mid-90s. Anything around Joshua Tree's still great.

God yes. Love Joshua Tree. Exit is one of my favorite songs still, just from the way it all comes together. I liked Rattle and Hum, I thought it had a lot of good tunes, if not particularly unique ones. Achtung Baby has several excellent songs and at least a couple I don't like. After that... U2 ceases to exist.

What's weird is I remember Boy and War but not Unforgettable Fire. Never even heard of it. Huh.

NightOwl2255: Red Rocks

Sadly no. I didn't get to Colorado until 1987. It was weird, they'd schedule their main tour dates in Denver at the coliseum or something, but every couple of years there'd be a "surprise" show at Red Rocks. It was like that with less popular bands like Midnight Oil as well (which also put on a great farking show there). Anyway, the one I went to was after Joshua Tree came out, but after the official tour. Don't ask me to get more specific than that, because those were some lost years. :-)

I have no idea. been listening to parts of that opera for about 12 years now. Basically, if you look at the pieces from "einstein on the beach" that are "Knee [#]" they're pretty listenable. His opera Akhnaten was also pretty listenable. You know, for Philip Glass, so right away whatever.

Speaking of Bruce, Don't Bring Me Down would be a pretty lulzy choice. I liked Mr. Blue Sky a lot more before it reborn into ad scores and bumper music.

He's just showing off because he can have all these songs on his playlist and not get sued by the artists. The GOP candidates can't even hum a tune without having the original artist telling them to "stop it".

I like Goo, but I can see why someone might not be impressed with it. Goo and Dirty are very much of their time, even if they're otherwise good albums. It feels cliche to say it, but Daydream Nation seems to be the perfect blend of their noisier early era and the more song-oriented latter era. Recommending SY is a bit hard as I think one's taste would probably dictate the better place to start (though I think Washing Machine-onward, with some exceptions, are very hit or miss).

Either way, Obama is totally a Bad Moon Rising kind of guy.

I have 7 of those songs on my iPhone. And really, there's no good reason why I don't have Aretha's cover of The Weight (or at least Mavis's).

Obama is actually a lot like U2. Both can be pretty damned inspirational and stirring, even if their most recent efforts have been half-hearted. Both are a little too "churchy" for their own good. And both are frequently attacked by empty-headed loudmouths who really don't know what they're talking about, but insist on shouting you down anyway.

Ha! I don't much care for "Daydream Nation." Thus proving your point, I believe.

I like "Dirty" musically. Lyrically, it's a little hackneyed for my taste. (It feels like, "Let's do a song about this social issue. OK, now let's do one about this social issue," etc.) I do think "Rather Ripped" is among the best work they've done. I didn't care much for "The Eternal" the first time I heard it, although it has grown on me since.

Is your handle a veiled Guided By Voices reference?

I think I listened to The Eternal once. I may have to go back and relisten, but I thought it was really weak, especially coming off of Rather Ripped.

Hooray America.

It's really a change for the worse from the artistically challenging, but oh so true -to-his-soul campaign song lists of GWB.

I mean, those cuts from PiL's Metal Box GW used to fire up the crowds with really said something about who he was, even if it was difficult for his campaign crowds to follow.

You speak the truth. I also loved that he walked out on F**k the Police. It really showed you his soul.
Cheney using Imperial March for his entrance song was maybe a little too literal, though.
