List so you don't have to wade through a Forbes slideshow:
1. Michael Vick 60%
2. Tiger Woods 60% (edge goes to Vick because he rated higher on "dislike a lot" than Woods)
3. Plaxico Burress 56%
4. Ndamukong Suh 51%
5. Kris Humphries 50%
6. LeBron James 48%
7. Kobe Bryant 45%
8. Terrell Owens 45%
9. Alex Rodriguez 44%
10. Kurt Busch 42%

Hmm... FTFA
Candidates are limited to those scoring at least 10% awareness with the public (hence, no hockey players).
Yet Kurt Busch is on the list, so NASCAR is more popular than Hockey. That's gotta sting.
Also Busch is the only non-minority on the list which is also pretty strange. No Ben Roethlisberger?
I mean in terms of "dirty doings" what Roethlisberger did was worse than what Tiger Woods or Kobe Bryant did, but he didn't even beat out Kris Humphries who's worse quality is being associated with Kim Kardashian.
Eh, what do I know about public perception.

"Anyone who hates dogs and kids can't be all bad."
I can certainly understand non-sports fan dog lovers disliking Vick for the obvious reason, but you'd think actual sports fans would be angrier at, say, Lebron James screwing Cleveland, guys who got busted for steroids or, I dunno, Albert "hah hah, suckers" Haynesworth.

Kurt Busch's fall from grace has been nothing short of epic. I'm not even certain what he did that warranted this level of ostracism. He's a complete asshole but not exactly unique in that regard. I'm starting to feel kind of sorry for him. The other day he made an appearance at the Monster Jam in DC. It's like he's willing to go anywhere and do anything to get back in people's good graces. Though I agree with you that racism isn't dead, you conveniently ignored the fact that blacks make up far greater than %20 of the population of athletes (well, i don't pay attention to car-racing and I think espn hi-lights of golf are more exciting than hi-lights of hockey).
Most of my most disliked athletes are black, but all of my most liked athletes are also black. The only not black hated I can think of is Roethlisburger . . . if Jurevicius still played he'd be there too (personal reason).

Well to be fair, the percentages of professional athletes are a little skewed. Still a few on there that probably shouldn't be, and as far as Nascar vs Hockey goes, the biggest turd in hockey (Sean Avery) was waived, and there's really no one to pick up his slack. If you made a list of classiest players in sports, Jerome Iginla would most likely be near the top of that list.

You can make the list without being an active player. For example Terrell Owens. They state the only reason hockey players didn't make the list is because they aren't famous enough. Also Kyle Busch is as big of a douche as Kurt, but he seems to be getting a pass. Who knows why some people are included and others are not.

Well that's the thing. Where do you draw the line? Are we liking athletes based on athletic performances or how they live their lives? Quality of play or sportsmanship? I used to hate TO because I thought he had very poor sportsmanship. I don't hate him now because he scored touchdowns for my team and seemed to grow up, at least a little bit. He's never been in trouble with the law, as far as I can remember. I don't know why people would still hate him unless they can't let go of things that happened 10 years ago.
I used to like Suh because I thought he was standup guy. He proved me wrong. Samesies for LeBron.
I have no idea why people hate Kris Humphries, but if it's over the Kardashian thing, I'm not sure I can trust anyone who spends enough time with that show to become emotionally involved with it.

Is there a particular reason you're falsely correlating statistics? Is it intentional? The tested population is athletes, not the general population. Blacks aren't 20% of that population. Also, a study like this is skewed toward toward the sports people watch more often - football and basketball. It also skews toward players that are higher profiled (good or bad). The demographics of those populations are even more skewed.
Racism is most definitely alive and well in America. Just not for any of the reasons you spouted here. You're certainly not doing yourself any favors by being so disingenuous.

Au contraire, mon frer (apologies to anyone who actually speaks French if I garbled that). I know plenty of people who like him solely based on his religious nutbaggery. If he was Muslim, I agree that he'd be despised. It always did amuse me the way Christians & Muslims seem to dislike each other so much. Has no one told them that their holy books are practically identical?
Anyway, I really do like Tebow, but it has nothing to do with his belief system. He possesses some of my favorite traits in professional athletes:
-Loose cannon, unpredictable (something that is awesome for players who don't play for my teams)
-Genuinely nice person who does good things off the field, even when he doesn't have to
-Hot

I'm past the whole dog thing with Vick but he's just not a likeable individual either professionally or personally. A lot of his actions on and off the field since his release from prison tell me that he hasn't changed or learned much - if at all - since his days in Atlanta. Guys like Ray Lewis and Ben Roethlisberger did or may have done some pretty shiatty things, but at least they learned from their experiences and actively worked to change their attitudes and behaviors. While I might not like those guys as people I can at least respect them for understanding where they went wrong and trying to change who they were for the better. Vick is the same punk douchebag he used to be, from bailing on his teammates during workout sessions this past summer to whining about getting hit during the year.
The only thing that continues to disturb me about Vick is how quickly Eagles fans embraced him and have grown to unconditionally support him.

The problem people, at least in racing, have with Kurt is how he acted toward Dr Jerry Punch. Punch is a really good guy....from his wikipedia in case you didn't know...
Punch worked as an emergency room physician before moving to ESPN in 1984 as a pit reporter for NASCAR races. In 1988, in two separate incidents, he helped with the rescue efforts after the serious wrecks of Rusty Wallace and Don Marmor. In the case of Rusty Wallace's front-stretch crash at Bristol Motor Speedway, Punch happened to be on Pit Road at the time, and as a result, was the first person on the scene before the rescue crew could be scrambled. Punch's medical training proved pivotal, as Wallace was initially unconscious following this practice-session crash. Punch revived Wallace, who was able to start the following night's race with only minor injuries, driving for about half the race before giving his seat up to a relief driver. Wallace now works with Punch in ESPN's coverage of NASCAR.
Punch is also credited with helping to save Ernie Irvan following a practice crash at Michigan International Speedway in August 1994. Punch also had aided injured pit crew members on pit road in several races in the 1990s.
While Punch was addressing a Nashville Superspeedway media luncheon he was interrupted by a loud crash from the back of the room. Punch immediately rushed from the podium to the back of the room where Jenny Gill (daughter of singer/musician, Vince Gill), a Nashville Superspeedway intern, had fainted. Punch helped revive the Middle Tennessee State graduate student. She was taken to a local care center for observation and soon recovered, according to Sean Dozier, the Superspeedway's public relations director. Punch returned to the podium and resumed his speech. He is also a renowned neurological physician.
While they are both equally bad guys, Kurt gets the edge for being a dick to a guy that would still try to save his life,

While I think time served is just that, I also think it's naive to believe people should start liking someone because their debt to society is paid.
There are athletes who I believe don't deserve most of the crap they get. Even one I pick on like LeBron and Tebow. That being said there are people that can't be legitimately defended. Vick is one of them.
There's are differences between having a big ego (Ochocinco, LeBron), having a self-destructive personality (TO, MettaWorldPeace), and being someone who hurts others (Vick, Busch). It doesn't matter if the "others" hurt are human or not. People in the first category will eventually be forgiven once they are no longer center stage. People in the second category more often do more harm to themselves; in time much of the hate for them may turn into pity (although a lot will still hate them). People in third category are frozen in time back to the event where they hurt that other party no matter what they do.
Ray Lewis will always be a killer even though he was never proven to be directly involved.
Roethlisberger will always be a rapist even if he was never proven to be more than a gigantic idiot with bad judgement.
Donte Stallworth will always be that guy who ran over a dude with his car.
Michael Vick will always be a Dog Killer whether he goes on after his playing days are over to be a vet who saves 1000x the dogs that died in his fighting ring.
Kobe, Tiger and Bill Clinton will always cheat on their wives with the first white girl they come across.
Public perception doesn't have to follow realistic changes in the individual's attitude and behavior and in most cases it won't. Since the public doesn't know these people personally, they can only base their judgement of them from their worst moment.
Animal abuse is something that will stick with him even after he's dead. Yes there may be a double standard because people don't complain about how abused the veal they are eating was before it was slaughtered, but there are double standards in life and you'll just have to get use to that.

Dear Nike,
I love that total calorie counter thingy idea. And I am going to buy one.
...just as soon as Vick is electrocuted and/or drowns.

Pretty much everything you just posted is -correct-, but I don't think it's -right-. What I mean is that you do a good job of explaining why things are the way they are (re: public perception), but that things are the way they are is, in my opinion, a failing of society.
Vick for example.. it can be argued that because of his spotlight, in addition to direct actions he's taken upon his release, he's saved far more dogs than he's harmed. While I don't like Vick himself, I've forgiven him and it bothers me (quite a lot actually) when people wish grievous harm or worse upon him, or say he's not deserving of a second chance.
