And of course we're the assholes that gave it up, and of course it ends up being the game winner since the Isles scored twice in the last 3 minutes.

The refs did miss an icing call with about 20 seconds left that would have given the Isles a face-off deep in the Habs' zone with a chance to tie. But I can't complain too much when we didn't score for the first 57 minutes of the game.

I was watching an AHL game at the Saddledome laughing with some buddies about how Gomez hadn't scored in a year.

Heat lose 4-0 to the Barons. Gomez scores.

Well played, karma, well played.

I wonder what Tim Thomas thinks about this.

I'll have to go check his Facebook page.

Why does Gauthier still have a job? Is it because Howson hasn't been fired yet?

Allez les boys!! Sure sign of a winning streak and eventual Stanley Cup run. Can't wait until the violent anarchists use game night as an excuse to incite a riot.

/Sr. Gomez... not the best acquisition, it turns out.

How many games does Abbostford play in Calgary?

Three more, and he'll catch Ryan McDonagh.

dallylamma: How many games does Abbostford play in Calgary?

I don't know. This is the first one I have seen, and the attendance for it was shockingly low.

I don't know if they didn't advertise it very well or if people in Calgary just don't give a f*ck about the Heat, but there was maybe 5,000 people there tops.

I expected a lot more. The Hitmen draw double that fairly consistently.

Gauthier has his own albatrosses to deal with. Getting Tomas Kaberle. Giving a big money contract to the corpse of Andre Markov. Trading Ryan O'Byrne to Colorado for Michael Bournival when Montreal's already loaded up with small scoring forwards.

I'm still waiting on Gauthier to take off the mask and show that he's been Cam Neely this whole time.

So, O'Byrne to CO, McDonagh to the Rangers (in the Gomez deal, no less)... it seems that Irishmen aren't welcome there...

Wasn't O'Byrne mostly terrible while on the Habs? I'm guessing they were just tickled to get something/anything for him.

I'm pretty sure not even Cam Neely would have pulled a player out of the middle of a game to trade him like Gauthier did with Cammalleri.

Was he signed as a scoring option? If that's not the case, then the headline isn't really relevant. I doubt he was hired to be a scoring machine or even considered a scoring option.

Has he averaged much more than 15 goals a year in his career?

I'd be more upset about the fact he was hired as a seasoned veteran with decent skills with only having played 20 some games this year for that kind of money. Hell, I'd be upset they paid him that much money to play even if he did score 30 goals a year.

If you take the average of his six seasons with the Devils(where we weren't paying him 7.5 million dollars a year) it's right around 16, once you factor out a 33 goal year. He's always been a playmaker though, so expecting him to score 7.5 million type goals is dumb. Which is why he's one of the shining moments of the Rangers "He can put on skates and swing a stick? 6 years, 6 million dollars" era.

Are you serious?

Aside from a goalie, is there ANY player in the NHL who makes $7.5-million and is expected to chip in only one goal a year?

Answer: No.

It was a stupid signing by the Rangers and it was even stupider for Gainey to trade for that contract, much less sending McDonagh back.

So you think he was signed to be a scoring machine? As I said, he probably hasn't averaged 15ish goals a year throughout his whole career. Why would you pay 7.5 million for those stats?

He was signed to do something, but all he did was a whole lot of nothing.

Funny how he scored just after the anniversary.

If I didn't know any better, I'd swear he was dogging the last few games just so he could hit the one year mark for cheap and easy press (because everyone was counting down the days), then once everything blew over he decided to end the streak once and for all.

So he scores on a one-timer. Literally and figuratively.

Whatever he was signed to do, he's doing a lot less of it now.

Certainly not $7.5 million worth.

Kind of a crappy thing to say about Gomez, actually. From all reports, he was trying his damnedest to score and play well but Montreal is just a really, really shiatty team

Habs fan? Yes. Typical Habs fan? I sincerely hope not.

Why in the world would Gomez not want to score before the 1-year mark? Do you not realize how much scrutiny he's been under for the past year+?
No doubt the man has been thoroughly embarrassed by this point. Yeah, at certain points he's probably rolled around on his bed on top of piles of cash, but there has to come a moment where it's just humiliating for him. If I was in his shoes, I would never have wanted to go a calendar year without scoring. Now people can say, "Hey, remember that loser Gomez who went a whole year without a goal?"

2012-02-10 07:58:58 PM
Guys, it was just a joke. Relax.

Seriously, I've been a fan of Gomez since I saw him take the Royal Bank cup when he played for the South Surrey Eagles (him and Shane Kuss were a dynamo on that team).

But you gotta admit, his timing could not be more apt -- right at the moment when most of the hockey world took notice of his difficulties.

He's a great two-way player, but he's not worth $7.5 million even in his best season.

I'm now hoping he goes on a surreal, Sam Gagne-like tear, making up for the year of hopelessness with 60 points in like 20 games. That would not only be totally awesome, it might convince me there really is a God or that God really does take a passing interest in the fortunes of professional athletes.

My goodness, habs fans are touchy.
