That guy did good work, but he only was on for like 3-4 issues I think. Seems like I remember Kirkman complained he was too slow to keep up a monthly schedule or something, and now he's whining because he was too slow to get rich.

Ah yes, the good artist from the Walking Dead.

/volume 2 was nice and jarring. Volume 15... still is.

Moore claims he was told in 2005 by Kirkman that a big TV deal was on the table but "that Kirkman would not be able to complete the deal unless [Moore] assigned all of his interest in the Walking Dead and other works to Kirkman," according to the complaint. Thinking the deal would fall apart, Moore signed the contract, he says, allowing Kirkman to "swindle" him out of his 50 percent interest in the copyright and never intending to pay him his share of royalties.

I don't blame the guy for trying, but unless a gun was held to his head while signing the paperwork he legally agreed to a deal but is now wanting to call a do-over. Sorry, no backsies.

I remember seeing those guys at WizardWorld Chicago many years ago hawking "Battle Pope." I was surprised when Kirkman actually became a name in the industry. He deserves it. He's good at what he does.

But as many people in the comics industry know, he's reputed to be something of a dick. You hear stories about how he worked his way into the industry through grassroots popularity and then crapped on people who helped him get there.

Moore was stupid to sign a contract giving away any rights he had, but he likely did it in good faith, thinking his longtime friend was looking out for the best interests of the IP and never suspecting he'd lose out in the end. You hear about stuff like that all the time, often for film options worth a lot less money and fame than The Walking Dead has achieved. But the truth is that it's near-impossible to make money in comics anymore, and the only way to gain any notoriety if you're not Marvel or DC is to sell out as much and as often as you can.

The way I understand it, the only way to succeed in the modern world is to be the biggest asshole in the room, willing to step on everyone else and forego emotions and compassion in favor of reaching for the big paycheck.

Which is why I'm totally broke. I'm a decent human being.

making comic books is for a lot of people a dream job. I sign a shiatty contract to do a job I hate. I can't blame someone for signing a bad contract for a job they love. the industry knows this and writes contracts that will yield the most profit

If he's entitled to 'motion picture' based profits and Walking Dead is a tv show then I don't see how he's entitled to see the accounting on the tv show. Unless the legal definition in show biz for 'motion picture' includes television he's out of luck on a technicality.

Moore is an amazing artist, and if he had bothered to stick with The Walking Dead past the first three issues I can see where he has a point - but he jumped-ship early on leaving the book with an ok-to-fair artist.

Kirkman has done all the heavy-lifting to make the book a success even with pretty mediocre artwork. I can't see how Moore can possibly claim 50% when he abandoned the series so early in its run.
