Unrelated but earlier today I was trying to find "When the Tigers Broke Free" by Pink Floyd on Spotify and they only had a karaoke version.

WTF would anyone choose to sing that song at a karaoke bar?

Tiger I's didn't use diesel engines.

It doesn't look like it has any ice cleats on the tracks, which may also make it harder to drive on the ice.

It looks like they mixed and matched between early, mid, and late versions.

It looks like they went with the late model solid steel wheel layout, but the wheels look like the early model rubber ones. However, they may be solid steel, and the rubber is just painted on. In that case a steel roadwheel on a steel track is going to make some noise.

The single head light is typical of a late model, but the smoke dischargers are typical of an early model. I wonder what specific version they were going for?

JarHeadBinks: It's a mark six... And we've got it by the ass!

I think the line was "mox nix... And we've got it by the ass!"

"

: : "macht nichts" - 'never mind' also "schon gut"

: : "das macht nichts - 'this/that doesn't matter'

: : "es machtnichts wenn" - 'there's no harm if...'

: : The spelling "mox nix" has become popular, so much so that I dare say Webster should consider entering it in the dictionary as a colloquial English express with roots in German. I even use 'mox nix' sometimes because readers are more likely to recognize the expression in this form.

: : Guten Tag,
: : David

I was going through somebits and pieces left over from when my father was stationed in Germany in the early 60's and came across a pamphlet intended to teach basic German phrases to American GI's. "Mox Nix" was one of the expressions used along with "ya" for "yes" ("ja" auf Deutsche). I suppose the military must have thought German spelling beyond the reach of the average soldier. I don't have proof but I think this could be the origin of this expression spelled this way. The pamphlets looked like they were produced in the 40's judging by the hairstyles and shoulder pads of the German femme fatales in the book.

Granted the actual meaning doesn't make much sense in the context of the scene. But Donald Sutherland's delivery makes it work.

And FYI, the 'Tigers' in Kelly's Heros were mockups built on Russian T34 chassis.

SOL on it being streaming. I really love Netflix as we dropped cable and use only Netflix streaming now. But I am getting quite frustrated that so many "classic" movies are unavailable for streaming. WTF? Is Netflix forbidden by the studios to stream everything or is there something else at work here?

And yes, you need to see it, really one of the best movies based on WWII fiction. The actors make the movie, no need for special effects.

The only way I got to keep them Tigers busy is to LET THEM SHOOT HOLES IN ME!

Definitely an antisocial type. Woof, woof, woof! That's my other dog imitation.

and of course...

We see our role as essentially defensive in nature. While our armies are advancing so fast and everyone's knocking themselves out to be heroes, we are holding ourselves in reserve in case the Krauts mount a counteroffensive which threatens Paris... or maybe even New York. Then we can move in and stop them. But for 1.6 million dollars, we could become heroes for three days.

yeah, baby....

JarHeadBinks: The Tiger is a Panzer VI - Hence Mark Six.

You're right, I'm wrong.

Just rewatched the scene, looked up the script, and the line is as you said.

My first reaction was this sucks, because having Oddball throw around German slang in the heat of battle was cooler to me than having Oddball suddenly being nomenclaturly correct in that particular moment. So my original interpretation was wishful thinking on my part.

In my defense, Mark III are Mark IIIs. Mark IV are Mark IVs. It's about 50/50 between calling it a Panther or a Mark V. But virtually every reference to a Tiger tank is Tiger. Here's the most painfully accurate site I could find, and even they call a Tiger a Tiger. Nobody refers to a Tiger as a Mark VI when generally speaking.

http://www.panzerworld.net/

Since I want to go on liking the movie in general, and the Oddball character in particular, I'll rationalize it this way. Oddball, being odd, and obsessed with tanks, is the one uniquely odd American who would accurately call a Tiger a Mark VI in the middle of a battle.

/I feel bettter now.

steering issue is that the design is missing quite a few tons of inertia

sounds nice tho

Asmenoth: It looks a little on the small side..like the proportions are a bit off. But, all in all, it's a mother beautiful replica! I would like a dozen please.

I think part of the reason it looks 'small' is because it is not in combat order. It doesn't have camo paint or ground camo, which intentionally distorts the appearence. It doesn't have the typical add ons like spare track sections or tow cables that would be hung on the exterior. These would 'bulk up' the profile that one is use to seeing. Pus interior space was very limited, so crews stored their personal gear in packs strapped to the outside of the tank, bulking up the profile even more. it has the late model/transport 2 road wheel setup which reduces the apparent width. And mech transport was actually quite scarce in the german army. So given the internal confines both crew and nearby troops rode on the outside, bulking up the profile even more.

Case in point

I will raise your repro Tiger with the repro British WWI Mk IV tank used for the filming of "War Horse" (new window)

The Mk IV was known for its ability to cause opposing troops to laugh so hard they unable to fire their weapons or run away.

Why does tank armor sometimes seem to be built up entirely of welds?

Is it just to make that face of the steel stronger? Odd that something as strong as a tank would need such mickeymouse armoring.

I wonder about that too; taking a guess: presumably, these parts are made of cast iron. To make these, you need a mold, a negative so to speak. Because these were made in a time of war, they didn't need a nice surface, they just scraped the thing out. An added advantage would be that the metal, when poured, cools off faster due to the bigger surface. Also, a corrugated surface would be stronger, and better able to deflect shells.
Again, I'm guessing, I may be completely wrong.

i can answer that. the texture you see isnt welding, it is a coating added to some tanks called zimmerite. it was meant to defeat magnetic explosives. infantry would run up to the tank, plant the mine on a face of armor, then run like hell. zimmerite made it so the mine woulndt stick to the armor face.
