Pelosi criticizing Colbert for going after her friend Gingritch is comedy gold. Low hanging fruit and not overly clever but comedy gold.

I love Pelosi if for no other reason, that she consistently makes the GOP her biatch.

OK, we have a perfect opportunity to do something here. The mindless marching morons "know" that they hate Nancy Pelosi, because O'HanniBeckBaugh have told them so. With a bit of careful nudging, I think we can seriously increase the funds being donated to Americans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow. It'd have to be a Facebook campaign, probably. Although --anyone have a Freeper account that is still allowed to post?

I wonder if there are any Gingrich supporters dumb enough and petty enough to stop supporting Gingrich because he's Nancy Pelosi's "friend"?

Has anybody put together a good timeline of events since Colbert started this whole thing? I'd like to be able to bring somebody up to speed without leaving out any key events. You could probably start at the rally in DC from last year.

I like the move, it's a good cause but it's a shiat solution. The problem is not as much the anonymity as it is the unlimited amount of money in elections so the wealthy can purchase political power. I'd rather have everyone be anonymous and limited to $5 than everyone be disclosed and unlimited. More than either of those, I'd rather just have publicly funded elections. That's what Pelosi should be using this for.

Talking about someone who is funny does not make you funny.

Clever, though, steering attention to the corrupting influence of campaign financing, where she remains morally virginal, instead of insider trading, where she has a seat at the grownup table.

Some ideas: mention that she just want to shut down superpacs because she things that the republicans will be able to use them to outspend Obama and win the election. Try throwing in some net neutrality and fairness doctrine dogwhistles.

Giltric: Is the DISCLOSE Act another one of those empty gestures like the STOCK Act?

It's possible, but unlikely since it's coming from the Democrats. The goal of the DISCLOSE Act is to reduce the impact of SuperPACs (via transparency), which makes complete sense for the Democrats as Democratic SuperPACs are expected to gather significantly less cash than their Republican counterparts. It's one of those (all-too-rare) situations where Democrats can legitimately lay claim to being anti-corruption while still benefitting themselves politically.

One does not need the benefit of hindsight for that.

Stewart, the day he got Tucker Carlson's show cancelled (which really only showed the world what regular viewers already knew), cemented himself as "Chief Non-Bullshiatting Newsy-Type Guy (Who Used to Be a Comedian, Yet is Still a Better Journalist [and Comedian] Than Most Others)".

When that poll came out showing TDS viewers as better informed than everyone else (except IIRC NPR viewers?), we saw it again.

Colbert has changed from a GOP parody into an IRL troll (with good intentions). He's so obviously joking at this point that he basically walked into the FEC, told them "I'm going to make fun of you and your campaign-finance rules - legally - and you are going to let me," AND GOT AWAY WITH IT.

The moral of this story is that you can make a well-researched, informative, hard-hitting expose of all the things wrong with a system, but what will get people looking is if you can do it with punchlines every few minutes.

// or, "the jester is the only one allowed to make fun of the king"

They need to change the angle of attack on DISCLOSE. The current system allows foreign entities to funnel money into American politics anonymously. Transparency will prevent this. It also allows the adversary of the politician benefiting from the money to counterattack using the names/position of donors - aka Koch brothers vs Hollywood execs.

The neat thing about Colbert's style of satire is that it relies on real world action and through crowdsourcing, gives his viewers a sense of community. The votes to name bridges, mascots, and even space station modules call attention to how willing people are to get in on a joke. Then he turns these merry pranksters on to charity projects with his wrist awareness bands and icecream flavor, with folks donating money not just because they should, but because they can get a laugh out of it. And lately, with the rally in DC and the Super PAC, the aim shifts to real political action.
This new shift to politics is not necessarily partisan, as the targets are not people to elect or not elect, but rather the way in which we conduct politics. True, they labast the R's more than the D's, but supporters from both sides can support his message of honesty in government hidden beneath the satirical facade.

C-can somebody tell me if she can run for Senator anywhere? Anywhere?! Because once elected, I'd like HER to be Senate Majority Leader and not Reid.

Y'know, after reading this post, I began to wonder if any Freepers actually still weren't aware that the Colbert character was a parody. I mean, it's been over 6 years. Surely, they've caught on? So I took a peek and found this on the first try:
