When users search for content on Tribler, results come directly from other peers instead of a central server.
By clicking on the desired search result, the meta-data is downloaded from another peer.

Congratulations. You've invented Limewire

...checks

o.O people still use limewire?

i didn't realise it was so resilient on a technical level. never really used it... it sucked tho didnt it? small numbers of connections, error prone?

without going to the trouble of downloading and installing Tribler, i wonder if users will be able to rate the torrents to warn of fakes, virus's etc?

Having the power to shut down the internet is what the powers that be want, so they probably wouldn't have a problem with this.

I"m pretty sure that bill got yanked, but they'll re-word it a bit and stuff it inside some "save the whales" initiative.

Because, you know, those other peer-to-peer sharing platforms did so well and were never used for anything nefarious like spreading viruses, mallware, trojans. At all. Ever.

At my company we have a guy whose past experience was "customer service for Limewire"

Myself and others: So? WTF does that mean?

"Hey, I'm not happy with your service"
"Whatevs. Go steal your sh*t for free elsewhere then"

The Mk2 Jaguar was infamous because it could outrun the police cars of the day, it's a similar story with the Ford Transit van. Both were highly favoured by nefarious people up to naughty things. But they didn't ever consider banning cars or removing certain types of them from the road because criminals favoured them. And these days your more likely to see a Transit hammering along with a set of ladders on the roof being used for legitimate business (driven by a grade-A wanker yes but there you go).

Peer-2-Peer systems might be synonymous with nefarious activities but they are used for other, more legitimate, things. World of Warcraft uses P2P for updates as an example, BSkyB's on-demand download service uses (or used) Kontiki, a P2P mechanism to push content. We're slowly seeing P2P being used for more mundane things and given sufficient time to mature I'm confident it'll end up exactly like a Transit van. Still used by criminals but largely in use for legitimate business reasons and available in a multitude of different configurations to suit anyones needs.

I wonder why they've never tried to do that. Probably too immoral even for them.

Nope. The internet is a major boon for them, quick and easy distribution of content to cinemas and the like. Much better than actually shipping physical products to locations. They just don't want your 1's and 0's to be able to get on the system. At all. Ever.

There are a variety of forces, including the RIAA/MPAA, that would like nothing more than for the whole internet to be one big micro controlled entity.

So you're just challenging them to do what they want to do.

Do you really think that SOPA/PIPA would have made them happy? DMCA was the start, SOPA/PIPA was the extension, and it wasn't going to end there.

If it includes an ability to obfuscate the individuals sharing - or some kind of ip range blocking feature - then I just found my new favorite file sharing software.

They plan to do it any way, so I would more say we are goading them into doing what they intend to do but at a moment of our choosing.

The RIAA's presumption is that the internet is still asleep at the wheel after SOPA and unaware of what might happen next.

The reality is that the public is still alert and waiting to hand the RIAA its own ass on a Popsicle stick.

Last week I was watching someone re-stocking a Red Box kiosk and was amused by the fact that the size and shape of the disc carrier was practically identical to the cases used to transport film reels to theaters.

Could it possibly BE the same, just cleaned up and painted? I was a projectionist and saw thousands of those. They're pretty rugged and would last a long time, but many of them are surely just sitting around now that so many cinemas have closed. Could RedBox be putting them to use, and saving themselves a few bucks in the process?

Ah, no. Same form-factor only. They appear to be plastic, with some sort of juke-box hub fed through a slot/door on one of the angled sides. They're not part of the kiosk's dispenser mechanism, it would seem. One lays on its side on a shelf below the kiosk works and is probably just for transport/storage of extra discs.

Would make a neat retro-look DVD/Blu-Ray storage box at home.
