Chesterfield Co. bus drivers would've used the kids as a human firewall.

\hero tag, indeed.

DRTFA, but when I was in school, the bus driver would've let us burn.

/was so obnoxious that I convinced my mother to drive me to school each day

Um, my school was across town. Like, take the highway to get to it across town. And I was 8 at the time. I could've biked, but I don't think the outcome would've been favorable.

Scary that a bus can burn so well.

Shiatty bus driver thread?

I had one that not only didn't stop at railroad tracks, but roared over them so fast that if I sat in back I hit my head on the roof.

Nice happy story. Very glad that all the kids made it out okay.
It would be a shame if the Hero story was ruined by finding out the Bus Driver had caused the fire. /jaded

Ignited diesel fuel, combined with motor oil, rubber belts, hoses and wire insulation creates an extremely energetic fire.

Happy Hours: AbbeySomeone: Cool, hero tag deserved but liarmitter has left me a bit crestfallen.

Sad commentary on society when acting rationally and following proper emergency procedures rates a hero tag.

I agree, this was a strangely written article making the bus driver sound like she was a robot taught how to follow a procedure, and when she did, was rewarded for it. It was slightly belittling IMO. Does anyone else detect that?

I'm not a fireman, but I've seen some training videos and stuff that my kid likes to watch. Isn't is standard procedure for someone entering a burning vehicle/structure to have another guy right behind him in case the nozzle guy needs to be dragged out? Is it standard procedure for a lone firefighter to enter a burning bus with no sign of backup?

So she gets praised and a promise of sex next week? I wouldn't make her wait.

I guess this is her:

Can't tell if she is fat or not. If that had to be my wife, at least she isn't freaky looking or completely revolting.
Can't tell if she has any wits and can't see her eyes well enough to see if there is any brightness to the bulb.

Probably not hot, though.

For a building, it's a minimum of a 2 man team with a 2 man RIT team standing by. For a bus? It didn't look he penetrated very far, and I'm sure there was at least one other fireman close by. It's actually not nearly as dangerous as a structure, because there is very little risk of the floor collapsing or the roof coming down on you and, like I said, it looked like he just stepped in the door. The bus was likely a diesel, so it's not going to get 'splodey either.

Tires burn crazy hot, they burn forever, and they're damn near impossible to put out. We had a semi tractor pulling a cattle pot one time, and the brakes got hot and started the rear tractor tires on fire. By the time we got there, which was less than 5 minutes, the front half of the thick aluminum trailer was completely gone, just from the heat of the tires burning underneath it. The aluminum got so hot it was actually burning. We're not talking beer can aluminum here, the structural beams are a couple of inches thick, and the sheeting is somewhere between 1/4" and 1/2" (not sure exactly). The poor critters that were up front never had chance, and were very well done by the time we got the fire out. We managed to get most of them out, though.

I also wouldn't be surprised to learn that one of the patents later freaks out over their child even being in a smoky bus and somehow gets the driver fired. Or that she gets accused of 'touching' one if the kids during the evacuation.

/being jaded sucks

While all of this is true, practically none of it is applicable here. There's no engine compartment fire at all. Note the lack of smoke, and in later shots of the extinguished vehicle there's a clear lack of any damage forward of the firewall. Likewise, the fuel tanks along the bottom of the vehicle are uninvolved.

Based on her description, there was an electrical fire in the dash, which probably extended into the driver's seat. Once the fire got to that polyurethane foam seat cushion, it was rock and roll time. The stuff burns as good as gasoline and each seat row just added to the inferno.

Just a guess, but the engine's probably riding three instead of four. Engineer's running the pump, other guy's securing the hydrant. This guy's there with a charged line so he went to work instead of standing around with his thumb up his arse. You can tell from the steam he mostly only advanced to the top of the steps so there wasn't a real risk. I would've done the same thing, safety sallies* be damned.

/Safety Sally is derogatory term firefighters use to describe those who use the safety mantra to mask their lack of competence or outright cowardice.

The third paragraph in the article was the school's statement. I thought it was belittling to the driver and a bit of self serving PR by the school. Made it sound like they have procedures in place for everything and the driver was of course well trained in all of them. "We of course train our drivers to handle buses spontaneously bursting into flames."
