If this is real and not a prank or an accident, that's one helluva mutation. I remember hearing rumors in the early 2000s of blue-grey mutation variant Cocakteils, but to this day I have never seen a picture of one.

Florida has blond squirrels and non-albino white squirrels. We also have a rather healthy population of hawks, ospreys and bald eagles, so how long they last is anyone's guess.

/I remember Canada had red ones and black ones

This! The first thing that came to mind was past stories of people dyeing their pet dogs and cats various colors. Lots of parks have tons of super-tame squirrels. Just imagine if someone caught a bunch (25?) and made them all sorts of different colors... maybe poke-a-dot... glow-in-the-dark...

What's the point of setting them loose elsewhere? Do mother squirrels leave their nests even if they have dependent babies? I feel like this is a very misguided action.

My mother used to do that with the field mice we would get in the house during the winter. Trap them and release at the golf course. Never thought about whether they had little baby mice around, just wanted them out of the house.

Kool-Aid powder is a dirt cheap and non-toxic way to dye animals. Looks like someone got some red and blue (or the grape I guess) and had a bit of fun. People do this kind of stuff to their cats and dogs too, it wears off after a while.

I suspect the purple squirrel will become not so purple in a week or so.
