i love titus andronicus but they belong nowhere near any discussion of brevity in rock music.

would add "Taste of Cindy" by the Jesus and Mary Chain (Link goes to both studio and acoustic versions on one track. The studio version is only about 1m45s)

this thread will be filled with Wire and Napalm Death tracks.

White Stripes at #1? That's impressive fail even for Paste.

Of course, my collection has 51 songs longer than 10 minutes and I have what must be called a relatively small collection these days - only 2400 songs with 7 days worth of playtime. So I'm no expect on good short songs.

"Great Songs"?! This list sucks. Straight Edge is only memorable as helping to launch the eponymous movement, and other than that is a really sh*tty song. Wait, everything by Minor Threat was sh*tty! They're a hardcore punk band's hardcore punk band i.e. the music being good would be impossible. Most HC punk sounds like absolute garbage and is only good if you're really pissed off and listening live while moshing.

The list fails without This Machine Kills Fascists by Anti-Flag, which was coincidentally the song that was playing when I clicked the link. It has historical roots in folk music (I'm looking at you, Guthrie) which gives it a sense of place and time.

All Straight Edge gave us was a punk movement full of insufferable teetotalers.

Also, f*ck you, subby.

Half are by Iron Maiden, aren't they?

And White Stripes were sorta okay. At least 7 Nation Army was catchy. Okay, so that was their only good song.

Sid_6.7: Half are by Iron Maiden, aren't they?

Rush and Dream Theater. Not an Iron Maiden fan.

I also see some ELP, Symphony X, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and Genesis in there.

Guess what kind of music I listen to?

The same music my mother listens to?!

Okay, it isn't fair for me to be too judgmental, I like a lot of weird stuff like big band and, of all things, tango (new window).

At least you didn't say "The Beatles". Ugh. Their only good song is Twist and Shout.

/But seriously, f*ck Pink Floyd.

Heh. Though I do have to point out, after double checking, that both Genesis and Pink Floyd are in there.

And fark it, let's start an actual music fight here. Post-Gabriel Genesis is better.

FirstNationalBastard: 20 songs under 2 minutes, only 6 you've actually heard of.

Six? Fark, I've only heard of Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and Why Don't We Do It in the Road. Which would be two of the 8,494 songs on this laptop (that's just shy of 25 days worth of music), which doesn't include all the random metal I got pre-installed on the external drive I got for my birthday a few years ago, or most of the classical collection I have. I'd guess I could possibly make it to my birthday in April if i started playing my entire collection tonight.

AW HELL NO YOU DIDN'T!!?!!

On a serious note, I don't have extreme hatred for Collins-led Genesis as some people might (I actually believe "Invisible Touch", "Land of Confusion" and "That's All" were all above-average pop songs for their time period, the 80s), but Genesis with Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett seemed to be just more creative and influential than Collins. "Supper's Ready" is one of the few prog-rock masterpieces of the 70s, and while I was not alive for their shows, from footage I can imagine they were just as important to the development of the live concert as KISS was.

I Have The Touch of a Shocked Monkey: "Supper's Ready" is one of the few prog-rock masterpieces of the 70s

I've heard this for quite a bit, also The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, but...maybe it's just me, but prog-era Genesis is just too rambling for my tastes. Domino is a fantastic song, though the CD version pales to the energy of this live version.

I've also always liked the big storyline albums better too. Scenes From A Memory is fantastic.

As with any musical question, it depends on taste I suppose. If one prefers quick and to the point pop songs, Collins-era Genesis is for you. I'm the kind who likes music that I can get lost in, and Gabriel-era Genesis fits the bill for that, as well as most of Pink Floyd's work.

However, personally Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound were better albums than The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. But once again, depends on your taste.

There might be something to this ADHD short songs thing. I have over 500 songs under 2 minutes in my iTunes library, and when we expand this to under 3:00, my list grows to over 2000.

I'll give you a few at random, it's as good as that list.

Under 2:00:
Strumpet Eye - Guided by Voices
Joanie Don't You Worry - Apples in Stereo
Shish Taouk - Les Cowboys Fringants
Tame - Pixies
Broken Face - Pixies
Your Emotions - Dead Kennedys
Man - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Not Fade Away - Rolling Stones
The Wind - Cat Stevens
Who is it? - Talking Heads
Hypnotize - White Stripes

And a whole lot of Girl Talk, which is pretty much the epitome of ADHD music.

Just over 2:00:
Song 2 - Blur
Dear Catastrophe Waitress - Belle & Sebastian
Fortunate Son - CCR
All Day and All of the Night - The Kinks
Brand New Cadillac - The Clash
Never Going Back Again - Fleetwood Mac
Lust for Life - Girls
Consolation Prize - Julie Doiron
Love is a Place - Metric
Girlfriend in a Coma - The Smiths
Concerning The UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois - Sufjan Stevens

To remind you that you suck for being so impatient:
We Used to Wait - Arcade Fire

And a song I've always considered as the essence of ADHD, because it's essentially flipping between two songs and features sudden and random jumping between separate themes, as well as lyrics about running late and daydreaming.
A Day in the Life - The Beatles

As someone who has been diagnosed with ADD, let me just say...that list sucks the shiat out of a dead pig's butt. The only good songs it contained were Judy is a Punk, Career Opportunities and Straight Edge. As for the rest of the songs, you couldn't pay me to listen to them.

Lorelle: A Groovy Kind Of Love - The Mindbenders

Yep, that's a great song. Too bad it isn't longer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---------------------------

Here's my song contribution: It's under three minutes, it's from the '80s, it's in a foreign language....and it's an earworm. (^)

Just about every They Might Be Giants song. Not complaining. Just saying.

This headline is entirely incorrect. An ADHD listener wouldn't survive a 2-minute song.

That one Beatles track is the only one on the list I've heard of.

I think most of the tracks in my music library are either album intros, or intermission speaking between songs. Was a huge Genesis fan in the late 80's, early 90's, then some Pink Floyd, before going Metal in the late 90's.

More seriously, Genesis sucks. With or without Peter Gabriel. Who also sucks, with or without Genesis.

Also: Phil Collins. Farking Christ. Any band that brings Phil Farking Collins to prominence can go to hell.

/post-Barret Pink Floyd also sucks. "See Emily Play" is their only good song.

My favorite short songs from my iPod:

"Wild Pack of Family Dogs," Modest Mouse
"When Heroes Go Down," Suzanne Vega
"High On Cruel," Neko Case
"Misfire," Neko Case
"I Think I Smell A Rat," White Stripes
"I'll Be Your Johnny On The Spot," Ween
"I Gots A Weasel," Ween
"Cheesecake Truck," King Missile

The winner for absolute shortest actual song in my collection?

"Dig Your Own Grave," Modest Mouse at 13 seconds

This list fails for lack of Harvey the Wonder Hamster.

2012-02-10 06:39:01 AM
"Nirvana was at their most aggressive with "Tourette's," the second-to-last track on 1993's In Utero. Kurt Cobain's lyrics are sung with such abandon that you can hardly make them out - but that's how they're meant to be"

Which isn't surprising. It's hard him to bargle nawdle zouss with all those marble in his mouth

Pretty much. And I spent the better part of a decade working in radio. "Radio-friendly," means something just shy of 3:00. But for every Blur Song 2, you do need a few long enough to let you run down the hall, and maybe one long enough to let you spend some time in there......
