(IGN) Asinine George Lucas says it's all YOUR fault you couldn't get the Han/Greedo cantina scene right. Greedo ALWAYS shot first, camera angles just prevented you from seeing it that way the first time   (movies.ign.com) divider line 185

No, Luke shot first from behind the grassy knoll.

My bad. First time editing a full length film. Sorry.

So Han was always nice, always shooting in self-defense only. Never a scoundrel.

So there was no Han character arc.

So Luke and Obi-Wan could have built a ship, meaning to fly themselves to Alderaan, and the film would not have suffered.

Good to know.

germ78: Greedo must suck at aiming if he can't hit Han from point-blank range.

Precisely. And the fact that he was in Jabba's employ undercuts Jabba as a menacing figure, and...

I think it's all a plot to get us to grow up.

Why the HELL would you still be using a crude handheld weapon that required aiming?

Why use light sabers? Why does someone lose a hand every film?

Not only could we not see both blasts, but no one told the sound guy to make effects for two blaster shots either.

germ78: Greedo must suck at aiming if he can't hit Han from point-blank range.

See, that's the most unrealistic thing. Greedo was a bounty hunter and he can't shoot someone from point blank range who isn't moving? I have little to no experience with weapons but I would bet massive amounts of money that I could take a gun out without looking at it under a table, point it directly ahead and hit a location where someone sitting opposite me would be.

I swear, people make these threads to piss me off.

timharrod: So there was no Han character arc.

His arc is that he cared for money, got his money, but saved Cause he was Lukes friend. The point he was a bad ass is not a story arc. He didn't become lesser or greater bad-ass.

markie_farkie: sentient robots.

"If Robots could think, none of us would be here". Obi-wan Kenobi.

ShawnDoc: Not only could we not see both blasts, but no one told the sound guy to make effects for two blaster shots either.

VALID POINT!

While I could see that he had an argument about the way the shot was set up, there are no two basters sounds.

You could argue that he might have tried it with two shot sound but it didn't work, or perhaps added to the confusion. But I think the fact is Lucas might have had second thoughts a few years later.

Personally, I don't think it makes him any less heroic if he shots at a guy that is threatening his life with a drawn gun.

GAT_00: See, that's the most unrealistic thing.

Star Wars does not equal reality. Or a representative of "realistic" cinema. It is a fantasy and obeys nothing more or less than heroic tropes. Which include bad guys missing at point blank range.

Or story wise, Greedo was just a horrible bounty hunter.

As someone who is old enough to have watched the original movie in the theater, can someone please explain the controversy here? It's been years since I've seen it, but I remember the scene: Han shoots the dipshiat at the bar who is pointing a gun at him, AFTER a conversation that clearly seems to be wrapping up with Greedo's intent to shoot Han.

So why exactly does anyone care if Greedo shot first? In the old westerns, where Lucas undoubtedly stole that entire scene from, the gunslinger duel didn't always result in two shots fired. More often than not, one man was faster on the draw and only one shot got off to begin with, but it didn't matter because the intent was always understood to be just as menacing as an actual shot. The Han/Greedo scene was just a protracted duel.

Actually, I'm just going to slap myself for writing that much about it in the first place. If someone cares to explain this "controversy" to me, great. If not, IT'S A farkING MOVIE!

Why does that fat tard think that he got it wrong the first time? That he had to go back and fix it so Han does not look like a cold blooded killer? Nobody, and I mean nobody. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBODY, ever thought Han acted in cold blood. Jeebus, even at 10 years of age I knew Han acted in self defense. Greedo had the gun drawn on him and made it perfectly clear that he was about to kill Han. "Over my dead body." "I've been waiting for this a long time." etc. etc. Han bought himself just enough time to draw his blaster. He was about to get shot but beat Greedo to it.

Damn it, Lucas really needs a kick to the ball sack.

How come guys with insanely successful intellectual properties can't ever leave them alone or do them right after the first few go-arounds?

Examples:

Star Wars - can't leave the f*cking originals alone. I mean, the 90s re-releases were tolerable, but not the rest of the changes.

Microsoft Windows - By most measures, the most popular software product of all time. Know how we got everything *just about* perfect in Windows 7? Well, we're throwing all of that out and replacing it with an interface originally designed for phone screens 480x800 pixels in size... and short of a registry hack, you can't turn back to what you're familiar with. Sure, it's a great idea on the phone, but makes desktop use torture.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2: two genre-defining games which changed the face of the hero and the face of the female sidekick in gaming, both for the better. Valve switches to an episode format to "reduce the development time of the series." At least four years later, we're still waiting for the follow-up on Episode 2. The Black Mesa fan remake has taken 7 years to complete and is still somewhere in between closed alpha and closed beta.

Metallica - Awesome band, was abducted by aliens and replaced with clones that only knew how to barely bridge the gap between hard alt-rock and thrash metal. Started off the war on "piracy". Has made one good album in the last 15 years, and it's still not as good as their original work.

The list goes on.

2012-02-09 11:16:53 PM
It was bad enough he felt he had to change it in the re-releases, but WTF does he think he's really doing here? That nobody ever saw the original cut? That it's not out on the internet? That plenty of people can't open the damn file on their computers and see that he's plain full of shiat in like 5 farking seconds? That just by saying this his words are going to travel back in time and change the original cut of the movie so that we never saw only one shot?

Worst jedi mind trick ever.

2012-02-09 11:17:11 PM
Screw the whole 'who shot first' spiel...

The true sin was having Vader do his 'NOOOOOOOOOO' in the middle of saving Luke from the Emperor.

The whole thing was 'supposed' to be a silent reversal. You're supposed to sit there and wonder at Vader/Anakin's mindset as he watched his son get brutally assaulted and nearly killed...You're supposed to sit there and silently urge him on, watch him look from Palpatine to Luke and back again and then, without a farking word, reach out and grab the old fark and throw him down a shaft.

Now, it just looks and sounds retarded....

Screw Lucas, that fat no-talent fark.

Grables'Daughter, you will find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view. George Lucas was a good artist. When I first saw his movies, he was already a great creative force. But I was amazed at how strongly the marketing department was with him. I took it upon myself to watch his movies. I thought that I could depend on my fond memories of the films to last and be something I could watch with my children. I was wrong.
