For some reason this made me giggle like crazy. Really sad story though, I'm all in favor of preventing poachers from hunting rhinos.

The point of the demonstration wasn't saving the rhino's life because it wasn't in immediate danger. It is also known that one of the possible outcomes of anesthesia is that the animal dies. They accepted the risk and they were unlucky. Doesn't qualify for the ironic tag.

They are idiots, and it is easier/safer to take a horn from a dead rhino, than a not-quite-sedated-enough rhino that may kill you as you cut off the horn.
