I think they're onto something. In EVERY train wreck I've seen, the accident could have been avoided if the train just swerved out of the way. Those Engineers must have one helluva lobby and union because I've never seen one of them get called on this.

Fark 'em. It takes a special kind of retard to try and beat a train.

What gets me is these people have no consideration for us commuters.

/makes me late for work

2012-02-09 07:06:39 PM
Well, in fairness to the people getting hit, those trains keep coming out of nowhere.

If only there were some way to recognize the paths trains travel on...

My cousin (12) got hit by a train a few years ago. I don't think any of these things would have prevented it.

Sadly, you're correct. I see people walking around the gates (not going under them) all the time.

As a stupid kid growing up in north Jersey, we used to hop a freight train all the time to go a few towns up and back because we knew that the train only came by twice a day on this set of freight tracks.
/still stupid and dangerous

We must rail against train deaths!

Also... Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee SARLOC.

/No, no. ACC, not OC.

I knew a guy who got drunk, walked over to the tracks through town, got naked, folded his clothes neatly, and then sat down to wait for a train.

they found one of his ears a block away. a block away, man.

also, railroad engineers often suffer severe depression/post traumatic stress from mowing through people and they can't do anything about it

2012-02-09 08:43:46 PM
It would be better not to have trains, then people could not be hit by them.

The same argument is true of cars, after all. Also, if there were no children, they wouldn't keep getting killed all the time, see how easy that is!

It's all okay because the governer lady said, "I'm sending in more trains"

All it takes to avoid getting hit by a train is to look both ways. Standard tracks can only curve so much in a certain distance so it's not like the train is going to sneak around a corner, even at 60+mph, and mow you down out of nowhere. Past a certain point you just have to let natural selection take its course when it comes to certain individuals not being aware enough to live safely in a modern society with all of its heavy machinery.

Anymore, I see gates come down on all 4 sides of an intersection. You really have to be trying to get hit most places. But, then there's the crossings where it's just the railroad crossing sign; stopping and looking would help. Just stop trying to beat the train; whatever has you in such a hurry isn't worth dying for.

So the solution is to hire /b/tards for railroad positions, since they've seen worse already?

Or you could just remember that trains can't swerve. They're kind of required to travel on those metal thingys stuck to the ground. And also that they'll be gone soon and then you can cross in comparative safety.

Shortly after 9/11 on a trip back from the city, I saw a guy step in front of an Amtrak express. It looked like someone threw 200 pounds of hamburger against the train instead of a human.

If not for a shoulder and arm remaining intact about 100 yards, and the head remaining intact about 200 yards from where the train eventually came to a stop you would never have known that what was hit had once been human.

What really gets me are the suiciders, giving the engineers the freak by jumping right at them, splatting themselves and making 2000 commuters late for work.

/selfish bastards
//jump off a farking bridge, at least they'll find something for your family

//5 for me in my 22 years of commuting by train.. average was three hours late

Monorail! Convert all trains and tracks to elevated monorails!

I have the perfect solution....

Turn all TSA Agents into railroad crossing guards!

Well, sir, there's nothing on earth like a genuine, bona-fide, electrified, 6-car monorail!

What'd I say?

Just outside my place is a railroad crossing with four gates as you describe. About two years ago a car lost it's front bumper getting hit by a train (and part of the engine to where it wasn't drivable, but there were no injuries). I was absolutely amazed how fast the train came to a stop, but to this day I don't know how the car managed to get itself into a position where it could get hit like that. It had to have been inside the gates, but just the front half, which meant the gate was sitting on top of his car before he was hit. After he was hit, the whole car was outside the gates and there was no damage to the gates, just adding to the confusion.

I guess now might be a good time to bring back cow catchers. Really big cow catchers. Had a friend who drove for the MBTA and he never hit someone but he told me of friends who did and it really messed them up for a while.

Those things are a rip off. I bought one and I couldn't catch a single cow with it.

New Jersey teens getting hit by trains is a bad thing?

But isn't their chance a track could bend?

Since this is New Jersey shouldn't they be trying to increase the number of deaths?

Make Stand By Me mandatory viewing for kids. No more trestle deaths.

Considering something like 90% of these are suicides, I tend to agree with them.

Frankly, I think the estate of the trespasser should be charged for damages to the train, to the recovery of the engineer, and to have to reimburse every passenger who was made late by the self-important asshole who decided to choose Death by Momentum.

Chris Christie was hit by a train once. The train suffered significant damage.

2012-02-10 09:33:08 AM
If only there was some way to get those things to follow a predetermined path. That way people could use common sense to stay off of said predetermined path and avoid injury.

That is pretty much how it works in Japan. The family/estate pays the damages and a fine.

What's the Line? Does this Line not have any double deckers?
On the North Jersey Coast, that's all we have for rush hour.
