I'm not quite sure why. Having had Moe's, Chipotle, Qdoba and Salsarita's, Moe's wins hands down. Chipotle is a distant third to Salsarita's.

I live about a mile from their first restaurant in Isla Vista, CA.

Most overpriced food I have ever come across. Holy crap.

Seriously, if you're going to pay $9 for a burrito, it better come with a top-shelf margarita or suck your dick or something.

Yeah, but don't you guys in the northwest have a big food truck culture?

That's just starting here in New Orleans... which is why I can *finally* get real Mexican food. (Going to eat from a mexican food truck in an hour or so, actually.)

The only reason I ever went in there was because the employees would come into my workplace and hand me business cards that were each good for a free burrito. I gave 'em away as fast as I could, but I ended up with hundreds in my possession at any one time.

It was as if each Chipolte employee was given a stack of cards each week by management and the crew had secretly all agreed to unload them at the local bookstore at random times of day.

As a latino, I resent and refute the use of the word "burrito" in describing anything on a Chipotle menu.

There's JUNIPER BERRIES in the carnitas FFS.

And don't even get me started on the F'd up way they make rice or what they call "salsa"

Oh and the heavy duty degreasers and WD40 they use constantly.....

You wouldn't catch me dead eating Chipotle slop.

I have a Chipotle steak burrito for lunch roughly once a week or so, and I've never been disappointed..

But as somebody mentioned above, Seattle (and worse, South Bellevue, where my office is located) is not exactly the easiest place to find quick and really good Mexican food.

I no longer do, and that makes me so sad. Once you go real Mexican, you can never appreciate the crap everyone else has to eat. I'm from San Diego, moved to DC where the best "Mexican" style food is Chipotle or Moe's (and I have to hand it to Moe's, their nachos are pretty awesome). Now I'm Seattle where at least we have Azteca and I can get a tamal or enchilada. It's not Lolita's or Valentina's or Cotixan or Murieta's, but it's still pretty tasty. Really, aside from Saffron Grille, Seattle doesn't have many outstanding restaurants like San Diego did

/was just in SD for 18 days; ate Rubio's 3 times, In N Out 3 times, Cotixan 2 times, and Murieta's once. Oh, and Filippi's Pizza once.
//amazingly only gained 3 pounds, which I immediately lost when I got home thanks to a nice case of bronchitis.
///I only mentioned the places I ate at when I was just there; this is in no way a complete list of the awesome cuisine in San Diego.

For me, chipotle occupies a weird no man's land between good Mexican and the kind of Mexican that's really good when I'm drunk or hungover. I just can't eat the stuff unless it's some really authentic mole or carnitas or some disgusting shiat like queso.

Because a lot of so-called "authentic" joints still have uber-sucky food. Authentic is not necessarily synonymous with good. The last time I let one of my hipster friends convince me to go to an "authentic" place ("nah nah nah, man, it's WORTH the 8 mile cab ride in the opposite direction of the bar we're going to") the chips were stale and the salsa tasted like it was cut with Pine-Sol.

Yeah, the people in here gnashing their teeth and rending their garments that "Chipotle's not AUTHENTIC!!1!" are kind of missing the point. Nobody (including Chipotle) is claiming that it is.

Tex-Mex is "meh." some is good, some is not so good.

Chipotle... because all the "non-brown" people already conquered the "brown" people and now get the right to crap all over your "culture" whenever we feel like it for the low low price of some 1st world guilt.

I have been from one end of Mexico to the other and eaten in dozens of authentic places and there were plenty of delicious, hearty meals, yet none were so great that I felt I must have the recipe unlike my travels around Europe.

Mexican food is culinary slumming it.

Yes that includes tequila and their beer too.

RKTeuthis: I'm from California, and I reject the characterization of Chipotle as "Cali-Mex."

All these burrito places that have been popping up as chains are Mission style burritos, a type of burrito that originated in San Francisco. Mexican burritos are much smaller and have few ingredients.

Anyway, the argument is pointless. NY and Chicago style pizzas aren't authentic Italian pizza, but that doesn't make them bad. Same with Chipotle. A lot of what we think of as "Mexican" food, even in border states, is an American invention. That doesn't make it inferior to the stuff you can get in Mexico.

I love Chipotle. There was one across the street from where I lived in Phoenix, but I only went in rarely because the mother of one of my band students was a manager there and wouldn't let me pay. I felt guilty, so I kept my visits infrequent.

If I want a gringo burrito Moe's is the best. However, I live in an area where there are a lot of Mexican immigrants and thus real Mexican food. The place I go to would probably barely pass a health inspection but damn the food is good. If most of the customers and staff doesn't speak much or any English, you are in the right place.

GleeUnit: t saddens me to see all the Chipotle hate in here

It's really bland. It's like space aliens came down, saw and smelled Mexican food and tried to recreate it. The folks who talk up Chipotle so much are the ones who don't know what actual Mexican food is supposed to taste like. Or they like bland food. Or both, I guess.

We had Habenero's tonight. It had actual, real flavor! What are the chances of that happening? And yet there are people who will wait in line for Chipotle -- which, ironically, won't have any actual chipotle flavor.

2012-02-09 09:32:28 PM
The only time I went to Chipolte, they put white rice and sour cream in the burrito. Needless to say, it was the blandest burrito I've ever had the misfortune of eating.

/now I get my burritos from a local Mexican-run joint

2012-02-09 09:36:02 PM
Wow, didn't realize there was this much Chipotle animosity. I have no problem with the place. There's better out there but it's fine, and I don't expect it to be the most authentic thing around.
